Papal Authority / Apostolic Succession / Peter as First Pope
The basis for papal authority lies in the Roman Catholic Church's interpretation of Matthew 16:18-19 --
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed[d] in heaven.
Catholics believe that Jesus was addressing Peter only in His statement, and interpret this verse as Jesus' intent to build an earthly institution of man with Peter as its foundational leader.
This series is intended to demonstrate Biblical support (or lack thereof) for certain doctrines common within the Catholic faith. Appeals to Tradition, Magisterium, Creeds, Commentaries, or any material other than Scripture are unacceptable.
By Scripture I mean the 69 non-apocryphal books. Please don't clutter up the thread with a debate about the origination of Scripture, its content, caretakers, or source. If you have any doubts about what Scripture is, then use the New King James Version and save your comments for another thread.
Please keep the discussion civil, centered on the topic, and above all Scriptural.

The Councils, Creeds, writings of the Fathers, etc. are a written record of how the Church has understood the 72 Books of Sacred Scripture for going on 2000 years.

I believe it is safe to suggest that Anglicans and Orthodox would consider the Bishop of Rome as the “First Among Equals” of all bishops however Anglicans and Orthodox continue to dispute the nature of that title. They hold that the Bishop of Rome should exercise authority in a more collegial manner (in the ancient tradition) rather than in a singular authoritative manner.

Logic dictates that the various “equal” authorities claimed within the RCC (Scripture, Tradition, Magisterium) ought to be independently sufficient in defending any RCC doctrine.
After all, if there is no error or contradiction in any of these authorities, then any one of them must provide an adequate defense of any doctrine.

I’m just here to post some good advice for fellow Catholics, which they are free to follow or reject.
That advice to my fellow Catholics: remember and consider carefully the admonitions in Matthew 7:6.
