JAY LENO’S OBSESSION (with the Catholic Church)
Catholic League ^ | July 24, 2007 | Bill Donohue

Posted on 07/25/2007 7:17:20 AM PDT by NYer

In the past five weeks, the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” has ridiculed priests six times and the pope once; all of the priest jokes were sexual in nature and painted priests as molesters.

·   June 18: Robin Williams gets into an extended diatribe about priests as pedophiles

·   June 20: Leno cracks a joke about priests as pedophiles

·   June 21: Leno makes a joke about a drunken pedophile priest

·   July 12: Leno ridicules the pope for restating Catholic doctrine on salvation

·   July 18: Leno portrays all priests as pedophiles

·   July 23: Leno jokes about priests using the Harry Potter books as “bait” to lure kids

·   July 23: Leno tells a story about a priest who pays to see a male stripper at a gay nightclub and jokes that the priest was cheating on his altar boy

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments as follows:

“Hypocritical priests make for good script, but in the world Jay Leno apparently lives in, priests have a monopoly on hypocrisy. This would seem to suggest that either he is clueless about other expressions of hypocrisy, or there is a strong animus against Catholicism at work. If it’s the former, the Catholic League can be of assistance—we track lots of hypocrites, many of whom live in Leno’s Hollywood backyard. If it’s the latter, we suggest he knock it off.”

He sounds like certain FReepers, always having to bring up the "pedophile" thing when talking about priests.

must be a big deal in LA given the recent settlement, and his writers assume everyone hears/cares/laughs at what they sit around and snark about in LA.

This is the same guy who said "Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It's not a secret, OK? And I'm not afraid to say it."

Donohue has issues, no doubt.

Because there’s nobody else left that he can make fun of without getting in trouble.

Jay doesn’t write the stuff, but he must approve it. Does anyone think this stuff is funny?

Well when the Church announces $600 million plus settlements for molestation accusations then why be surprised when they’re the target of ridicule?

Late night TV is the lowest of the low and this is only to be expected. The Church is bigger than this and I think a dignified silence is the best response to trash talkers like Leno, Maher et al.

The potty mouthed insults of these so called "comedians" do not really merit a response. To do so, bestows upon them a certain gravitas which they do not deserve. Their cheap shots are just that. Cheap.

There is a role for the Catholic League in combating institutionalized bias against Catholicism, but attempting to stop people saying bad things about the Church is a futile and dangerous mission. Dangerous in the sense that we risk becoming like the lavendar Nazis who scream at every negative reference to homosexuality.

The world is never going to love us.

I have gladly not watched an episode since the day Carson left. Leno and his cronies Letterman and Conan get paid for doing less than our Senators with less talent.

All of Donohue's quote:

"I spoke to Mel a couple of weeks ago about this. And I don‘t think it really matters a whole lot to him. It certainly doesn‘t matter to me. We‘ve already won.

Who really cares what Hollywood thinks? All these hacks come out there. Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. It‘s not a secret, OK? And I‘m not afraid to say it. That‘s why they hate this movie. It‘s about Jesus Christ, and it‘s about truth. It‘s about the messiah.

Hollywood likes anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions. I believe in traditional values and restraint. They believe in libertinism. We have nothing in common. But you know what? The culture war has been ongoing for a long time. Their side has lost. You have got secular Jews. You have got embittered ex-Catholics, including a lot of ex-Catholic priests who hate the Catholic Church, wacko Protestants in the same group, and these people are in the margins. Frankly, Michael Moore represents a cult movie. Mel Gibson represents the mainstream of America.

Could it be Alex, that your real problem with Donohue's opinion is the "wacko Protestant" reference and you've singled out the "Jews" remark to make him appear an anti-semitic kook? The conversation is not about Jews per se but about reaction to Gibson's movie, The Passion.

You surely wouldn't dispute his overall point that Hollywood is corrupt? Unless of course, your distaste for Hollywood and its values is outweighed by your distaste for outspoken Catholics.

Discuss the issues all you want, but do NOT make it personal.

Attributing motives or otherwise reading the mind of another Freeper is "making it personal."

Not that point, but I would dispute Catholic League President William Donohue's blatant statements that "secular Jews...[like] anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes....They like abortions....They believe in libertinism." This how the president of the Catholic League - which laughably bills itself as a "civil rights organization" - describes "secular Jews", the group that William Donohue believes Hollywood "is controlled by." If that's what Hollywood "likes", and the "secular Jews" control Hollywood - well, you do the math.

Are you saying you agree with William Donohue's racial and moral (mis)characterization of "secular Jews"?

What is the Catholic League?
The Catholic League is the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights organization. Founded in 1973 by the late Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J., the Catholic League defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination.

Well maybe he'll tell us his motives and then I won't have to engage in "reading the mind"... :-)

In my opinion, this issues/personal distinction is artificial and entirely contrived.

Everything which you write and say, every opinion you express on these boards says something about who you are and the sort of character you possess. Without even trying, one starts to see patterns. There's no getting around that.
