Vatican, Jul. 6, 2007 (CWNews.com) - The Vatican will soon release a new doctrinal document, addressing the unique role of the Catholic Church in God's plan for salvation, according to informed sources in Rome.
The new document, to be released from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, will address questions about the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, in Lumen Gentium (doc), that the Church founded by Christ "subsists in the Catholic Church."
Questions about how the true Church "subsists" in the Catholic Church have drawn a series of answers from the Vatican-- most recently the declaration Dominus Iesus (doc), which was released in 2000 with the approval of Pope John Paul II (bio - news) and signed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.
The document to be released on July 10 will repeat and reinforce the fundamental message of Dominus Iesus that the Church founded by Jesus Christ exists fully in the Catholic Church alone. The document will critique the notion that other religious bodies may also represent the Church founded by Christ, and caution against the "ecclesial relativism" that Pope Benedict has criticized in the past.
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith will release the document on July 10, reports indicate. The plan for release of the document has not yet been confirmed by the Vatican.
Three days after the Motu Proprio........will anyone notice?
I hope so.
Will this have ex cathedra standing?
There will be no new dogma defined.
Rather, this will be a reaffirmation of longstanding Catholic teaching.
thanks
Not just a "reaffirmation," I hope. I'd like an explanation that doesn't leave me scratching my head and looking for a Guinness!
And I'm not easily flabbered ... I used to study revenue codes for a living!
Can I reach for a Guinness even if I do understand it?
Oh, of course!
When the document comes out, I'll get some South African wine, cheese and crackers. I recall from my college years that a few glasses made theological reading go down more easily :-).
FWIW, the history of Islam's growth stems from weaknesses in christianity. Where Christianity, as a whole, is split and divided, Islam marches in triumphantly. With 33,000+ christian denominations in the Western Hemisphere, combined with their desire to proselitize Catholic countries, the door to Islam has now been opened wide. The Holy Father is correct in attempting to draw us together as a united force against this evil. God bless him in this effort!
Catholic ping!
Very interesting indeed. BXVI has been burning the midnight oil! And this one got by without even the tiniest of leaks, to my knowledge.
Yes, it’s definitely going to be big.
"Oh, a pint mug of Guinness makes theology go down,
Theology go dooooowwwwn, theology go down!
Yes, a pint mug of Guinness makes theology go down,
In the most delightful way!"

( . . . it's not G&S, but it'll have to do . . . .)

Looks like quite a celebration!
I have always been struck by the fact that the faiths that grow are those which are the most fundamentalist in nature. Islam is of course the most obvious example of this. The Catholic Church has been caught in a period of doubts and teaching "grey areas" from the pulpits, and this has led to massive drops in attendance and devotion. People just don't feel compelled to participate and share a faith which has an identity crisis. If the priests don't know how to be "saved" then why join their church?
Fundamentalist Christians and Muslims have no such problem. Sure, they are way off base, but they don't go around trying to get people to join by telling them "Hey, be a muslim. It may help, or maybe no, and well, how should I know how to get to heaven?" Anglicanism, my former church, has been waffling itself into nonexistence, and we should not be practicing what they preach. Documents such as that spoken about here give me hope that we may be trying to turn around our current course and return to a proper relationship to the truth.

If people thought the Latin Mass MP was controversial, then this document will knock their blocks off.
good call
