The Holy Tridentine Roman Rite Mass

The Tridentine Mass takes its name from the Council of Trent (1545-63), under the watchful eye of Pope St. Pius V. The "Tridentine Rite" is, therefore, more properly called the Ancient or Traditional Roman Rite. The last edition of its missal was published in 1962.

The traditional Roman Rite differs from the new rite -- the 1969 Novus Ordo. This “new Mass” omits about 70 percent of the traditional Mass prayers. Most consider the traditional Latin Mass to be much more formal, more dignified.

It’s emphasis is on the sacrifice of Jesus and the recognition of the “true presence” of Jesus—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity—in the Holy Eucharist. The entire Mass focuses on the Consecration of the Body and Blood and on reception of Christ in Holy Communion. This is represented in the photograph below.

The priest and the faithful face forward to the altar...and to God. The Holy Traditional Tridentine Roman Rite Latin Mass is the manner in which Catholics worshiped The One True God for well over 1,000 years. For those over the age of 40, it is the Mass of their youth. For those too young to remember incense filled churches, Gregorian chant, and the reverent silence at Mass, the Tridentine rite offers a return to a profound manner of worship.

Double Major Feast - Octave of Easter

Station at the Church of Saint Pancras in Rome. Low Sunday, so called in order to emphasize the contrast between the great Easter solemnity and the Sunday which ends the Octave, is also known as Quasimodo, from the first words of the Introit. (Not the hunchback of Notre Dame!) In the Latin Missal and Breviary it is Called Dominica in Albis ( depositis or deponendis ), because the Neophytes on that day put aside their white garments. Another Latin name, Pascha clausum, is preserved in the French Paques - "closes" and in the Dutch Beloken Paschen, i.e. "close of Easter," this day ending the Octave (Collect). The Church compares the Neophytes to newborn babes, and the milk she gives them to drink (Introit) is the faith in Christ which will enable them to overcome with Him the world. This faith has for its foundation the testimony of the Father, Who at the baptism of Christ ( water ) declared Him to be His Son; the testimony of the Son, Who on the Cross ( blood ) showed Himself the Son of God; and that of the Holy Ghost, Who by Christ's Resurrection attested the divinity of the Redeemer ( Gospel ). The Gospel further shows us how Christ, Who twice appeared in the Cenacle, dispelled the doubts of the Apostle - not present in the upper room on Easter night - Saint Thomas and praised those who, without having seen Him, yet believed in Him. Let us proclaim our faith in the risen Christ, and in the Divine Presence in the Holy Eucharist let us repeat with Thomas that cry of faith and humility, "My Lord and my God !"

Lent may be over, but it does not mean we let up our disciplines of prayer and fasting for we need to be steeled and ready for fierce spiritual warfare for the evil one plies his trade everywhere, growing more fierce in his attacks on his Adversary, which hurts most when it is directed toward His Own Blessed Mother who will play such a pivotal role in satan's demise. Are we going to sit idly by and let the evil one control men to blaspheme and denounce God and ridicule His Mother? If so we're not showing much loyalty and shouldn't be surprised at why the Almighty is so justly angry.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

With Mary, the Holy Mother of God, with the Apostles, with Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to the empty tomb, we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. With Thomas, who once doubted, we make out profession of faith, "My Lord and my God!" The beloved Disciple St. John assures us in today's Epistle, "This is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith."

It is with great sadness that we witness the faithlessness of the present generation. We have already noted that some who do not know God dare to blaspheme His Divine Son, Jesus Christ, presenting Him as a merely human figure who staged His own Resurrection, married Mary Magdalene, and left a line of descendants who still live on this earth. This is the theme of The Da Vinci Code. Yet in what must inflame God's anger to its height, calling down His justified and imminent chastisements upon this world, they now shamelessly insult the holy, most pure and Immaculate Virgin Mary. In a shocking and blasphemous musical comedy entitled "Mary, Like a Virgin," Mary is portrayed as a lewd and impure woman, and blasphemous things are implied about her relationship with the all-holy God.

Blasphemy - among the greatest of sins, a crime punishable by death in the Old Testament, as we read in the Book of Leviticus: "Tell the Israelites: Anyone who curses his God shall bear the penalty of his sin; whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall be put to death. The whole community shall stone him; alien and native alike must be put to death for blaspheming the Lord's name" ( Leviticus 24:15,16 ).

God revealed His Holy Name to Moses on Mount Sinai. When Moses asked Him, "When I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' if they ask me, 'What is His name?' what am I to tell them?" And God said, "This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you" ( Exodus 3:13,14 ).

On several occasions Our Lord took to Himself the holy Name, I AM, to which He had a right, being the only-begotten Son of God. Falsely accusing Our Lord of blasphemy, the Jews took up stones to cast at Him when He said to them: "Abraham your father rejoiced that he was to see My day. He saw it and was glad." The Jews therefore said to Him, 'Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast Thou seen Abraham?' Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM." They therefore took up stones to cast at Him; but Jesus hid Himself, and went out from the temple" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 8:56-59 ).

About Our Lord's trial before the Sanhedrin we read: "Again the high priest began to ask Him, and said to Him, 'Art Thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?' And Jesus said to him, "I am. And you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of Heaven." But the high priest tore His garments and said, 'What further need have we of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?' And they all condemned Him as liable to death" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 14:61-64 ).

We find in the Catechism of the Council of Trent a well deserved rebuke against those who abuse the name of the Lord. After discussing other sins against the Second Commandment, the Catechism says about blasphemy: "Still more enormous is the guilt of those who, with impure and defiled lips, dare to curse or blaspheme the holy name of God - that name which is to be blessed and praised above measure by all creatures, or even the names of the Saints who reign with Him in glory. So atrocious and horrible is this crime that the Sacred Scriptures, sometimes when speaking of blasphemy use the word blessing."

The greatest of Saints reigning with God in glory, our beloved Mother and Queen, is insulted, derided, pierced to the heart in this latest horrible caricature of the holiest and fairest of all God's creatures. The Immaculate Mother of the Risen and Glorified Christ, assumed body and soul into Heaven with Him, is dragged through the mud and filth of this sinful world. How can we not weep and mourn such an indignity to our beloved Holy Mother? How can we not rise up in righteous anger at so great an offense against Heaven! May Saint Michael the Archangel cast down those impious scoundrels as he cast out the devil and his angels from Heaven: "And there was a battle in Heaven; Michael and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels. And they did not prevail, neither was their place found any more in Heaven" ( Apocalypse 12:7,8 ).

This must be a wakeup call for us. The Son of God Himself is denied and crucified again, and the sword of sorrow once again pierces the heart of His Holy Mother. God's just anger is being enkindled against a world immersed in sin and unbelief, and the threatened chastisements are upon us. The angels are already pouring out the bowls of God's wrath upon the nations. If we let these terrible atrocities pass us by without springing into action we may never have the grace to resist the onslaughts of Satan's kingdom. If we remain passive and spineless while the enemies of the cross of Christ have their way we may end up like them: "For many walk, of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is ruin, their god is the belly, their glory is in their shame, they mind the things of earth" ( Philippians 3:18,19 ).

Our chief weapon in the spiritual combat is devout and persevering prayer - our rosaries and other devotions, our prayerful Scripture reading, our meditating on the things of God, and devout participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We must proclaim our loyalty to Christ and His Kingdom by conforming our lives to His - no more affection for sin and the broad path that leads to destruction, but a firm choice of the narrow way that leads to life. But we can also act together to defend what we hold dear, demonstrating to the world that we will not accept its insults and blasphemies against our God and His Holy Mother. We have work to do.

Prayer for the Universal Church

Pray for those who have been wandering and wondering in the conciliar desert for lo over 40 years. Pray for the conversion of the Novus Ordo hierarchy from the highest to the lowest echelons of the clergy, who, in the same manner as the Arian bishops, have apostasized from the True Church which Jesus Christ established on the Rock of Peter. Saint Basilissa and Anastasia

Martyred c. 62. The story is told that these two noble Roman women were converted to Christianity by the preaching of Blessed Apostles Saints Peter and Paul. After each of the apostles was martyred in Rome, Basilissa and Anastasia found their bodies and buried them secretly under the screen of night.

This infuriated the authorities, who discovered who had buried the apostles and cast the two women into jail, eventually bringing them before the tribunal of Nero. Neither Basilissa nor Anastasia would renounce their Christian faith. In consequence, both were sentenced to be savagely mutilated--tongues ripped out and limbs cut off--before they were beheaded. Only the Greeks have recorded this story of sacrifice and love of the Blessed Trinity.

In art, SS. Basilissa and Anastasia are portrayed with their hands, feet, and heads cut off. They may also be shown burying the bodies of Blessed Apostles Saints Peter and Paul.

Saint Hunna of Alsace

Died c. 679; canonized by Pope Leo X in 1520 at the urging of Duke Ulric of Würtemberg. Hunna earned the title of "holy washerwoman" because she would lend a hand with any job--even to doing the laundry for the poor. Her family appears to have been influenced by Bishop Saint Deodatus of Nevers, because Hunna's son was named for and baptized by him. When he was of age, he entered the monastery founded by Deodatus, Ebersheimmünster near Strasbourg. Saint Hunna is represented as a noblewoman with linen near her; sometimes she is washing it for the poor and sick. She is venerated in Alsace. Patroness of laundresses.


Saint Joseph de Veuster

Born January 3, 1840 at Tremeloo, Belgium; died April 15, 1889; declared venerable by Pope Pius VI in 1977; canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 3, 1995.

Joseph de Veuster studied at the College of Braine-le-Comte, and in 1860 joined the Fathers of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (the Picpus Fathers), taking the name Damien. While still a novice in a Parisien monastery, volunteered for missionary work in the southern seas, and was refused because he was not yet ordained, but when one who should have gone was prevented through illness, Damien was allowed to go in his stead. His superiors need not have feared, for of the ten monks who sailed for Hawaii in 1864, Damien's name and work to outlive them all.

Damien was ordained in Honolulu two months after his arrival and was given a remote parish covering an area as large as his native Belgium, in a barren and volcanic land, where with no white colleague and no church building he began his work. He worked for nine years to evangelize the peoples of Puno and Kohala.

First he labored with his own hands under a blazing sun to build a chapel, then visited his parish from end to end, journeying past the craters and lakes of fire and through the sulphurous fumes or the mud which followed torrential rains. Often he took his life in his hands, as when once at midnight he burst into a secret burial cave where 30 natives were engaged in a ghoulish ritual. Without hesitation he interrupted the ceremony, spilling their vessels of animal blood and with angry scorn tearing to shreds their pagan symbols.

He is remembered most for his work among the lepers of Molokai, where the authorities had established a self-supporting leper settlement to which all who had contracted the high-contagious disease were compulsorily deported and where under appalling conditions they were left to their fate. When the call came in 1873 for a priest for Molokai, with the proviso that under new government regulations he must remain there for life, though whoever volunteered to go was almost certain to contract and die of the disease, Damien pleaded for the post.

Within an hour he was on his way. At Honolulu he transferred to a ship carrying 50 lepers, and at Molokai he was greeted by his new parishioners, who lined the beach in the last stages of disease and despair. He found only one hopeful sign among the squalor of his new surroundings--a rude wooden chapel, where his first act was to kneel in prayer. He spent that night in cleaning it, and was disturbed by the drunken laughter of the dissolute--for it was a lawless community, by the cries of the dying, and by the howling of the wild dogs that devoured the dead.

There follows the epic of his transformation of this living hell. In 1885, at the age of 49 he himself caught the disease, but crippled and deformed, he carried on, refusing to be transhipped for treatment. Before he died, four other priests and a band of nurses had joined him, and under his influence the island of death became a civilized welfare community.

Though he was often slandered during his lifetime, his holiness and dedication were quickly recognized after his death. (Robert Louis Stevenson wrote an impassioned defense of his character in 1905, which was used to support the canonization.) His body was brought home, and this man who was born a peasant and had spent his life, and sacrificed it, among the banished lepers of Molokai, was buried like a prince in Antwerp Cathedral.

Died 485; cultus approved in 1867. Laurentinus was a five-year-old boy presumed to have been killed by the Jews on Good Friday. Laurentinus died at Valrovina ( diocese of Vicenza ), Italy.

Saint Maro, Eutyches & Victorinus

Died c. 99. Maro, Eutyches, and Victorinus accompanied Saint Flavia Domitilla in her exile to the island of Ponza. Eventually they returned to Rome and were martyred under Trajan. Eutyches was stabbed; Victorinus, hung upside down over a sulphur spring; Maro, beheaded.

Died 251. These Persian noblemen were martyred by being beaten to death with crowbars under Decius

Saint Mundus of Argyle

Died c. 962. Saint Mundus was a Scottish abbot of a large abbey, who made several monastic foundations at Argyle, where he was once venerated as patron. His other heritage included excellent maxims relating to fraternal charity, meekness, the value of solitude, and the need to be aware of the Divine presence. He was previously honored as the primary patron of Scotland.

Blessed Nidger of Augsburg

Died c. 829. Nidger is said to have been abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Ottobeuren in Bavaria. He became bishop of Augsburg, Germany, in 822.

Born in Leinster, Ireland; died 584. Saint Ruadan, born of royal Munster stock, became a disciple of Saint Finian of Clonard. Because he was the founding abbot of Lothra Monastery in Tipperary, where he directed 150 fervent monks who produced the masterpiece Stowe Missal, Ruadan is considered a confessor of the faith and one of the twelve Apostles of Erin. He divided his time between prayer and manual labor sanctified by prayer. One legend of Ruadan involves the Cursing of Tara, wherein the saintly abbot invoked a solemn curse against the High King of Tara for violating the sanctuary of the monastery to capture the king of Connaught. It is said that the curse was so efficacious that Tara was ruined and deserted. His hand was preserved in a silver shrine at Lothra, but destroyed during the Reformation. The parish church of Lothra was built on to an ancient oratory, which may have been that of Ruadan.

Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, hold the catholic faith.

Whoever does not keep it whole and undefiled will without doubt perish eternally.

And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in trinity and Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance.

For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Holy Ghost is another.

But the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost is one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.

Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost : the Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Ghost infinite; the Father eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Ghost eternal.

And yet there are not three Eternals, but one Eternal, just as there are not three Uncreated or three Infinites, but one Uncreated and one Infinite.

In the same way, the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, the Holy Ghost almighty; and yet there are not three Almighties but one Almighty.

So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Ghost is God; and yet there are not three Gods, but one God.

So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Ghost is Lord; and yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord.

Just as we are compelled by the Apostolic Truth to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord, so also are we prohibited by the One True Faith, Roman Catholicism, to say that there are three Gods or Lords.

The Father is not made nor created nor begotten by anyone.
The Son is neither made nor created, but begotten of the Father alone.

The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten but proceeding.

Thus, there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts.

And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another; but the whole three persons are coeternal with each other and coequal, so that in all things, as has been stated above, the Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped.

Therefore, whoever desires to be saved must think thus about the Trinity.

But it is also necessary for everlasting salvation that one faithfully believe the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, it is the right faith that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man.

He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in this age: perfect God and perfect man, composed of a rational soul and human flesh; equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, less than the Father with respect to His humanity.

Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ: one, however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh but by the assumption of the humanity into God; one altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person.

For as the rational soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ, who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

At His coming all people will rise again with their bodies and give an account concerning their own deeds.

And those who have done good will enter into eternal life, and those who have done evil into eternal fire.

This is the Roman Catholic faith; whoever does not believe it's Sacred Dogma faithfully and firmly cannot be saved.

The Athanasian Creed : "....The "damnatory", or "minatory clauses", are the pronouncements contained in the symbol, of the penalties which follow the rejection of what is there [commanded] of our belief. It opens with one of them: "Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the Catholic Faith". The same is expressed in the verses beginning: "Furthermore, it is necessary" etc., and "For the right Faith is" etc., and finally in the concluding verse: "This is the Catholic Faith, which except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved". Just as the Creed states in a very plain and precise way what the Catholic Faith is concerning the important doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, so it asserts with equal plainness and precision what will happen to those who do not faithfully and steadfastly believe in these revealed truths. I would prefer the primary reason for the meeting is to fulfill an avoided obligation by seven successive popes ( Benedict XV through John Paul II ) and the entire lot of bishops from 1917 through present who have turned their collective backs on the will of our Holy and Immaculate Lady of Fatima since 1917 :


"Unless the bishops and the Holy Father in unity with all the bishops of the world, unless they consecrate Russia to My Mother's Immaculate Heart, the world will be doomed! Because Russia will continue to spread her errors throughout the world, rising up wars and carnage and pestilence and famine. Is this what you want, My children?
"Every single soul upon earth that hears My voice this evening has an obligation, for the sanctification of their own souls and the souls of those they love, to listen to Me and follow the direction. I wish that all who hear My words this evening will go forward and besiege, if necessary, the Holy Father and the bishops with a request for this consecration of Russia. We do not mean the world, My children, We mean Russia!"

The Blessed Virgin's request for the Consecration of Russia remains one of the most controversial aspects of the entire Fatima Message. While several popes have undertaken consecrations of the world since the request was made public (including Pope John Paul II in 1982 and 1984), sadly, none of these have fulfilled the specific requirements of Our Lord and Our Lady's requests.

Unfortunately, any Missal published after 1943 does NOT have the Council of Trent mandated Psalter of Saint Jerome. Thus, such Missals are not really “Traditional”!

Most people are not aware of this historical liturgical fact because most people are not aware of the historical context in which this happened.

Very briefly, Father Augustin Bea, S.J., the future Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. [b. at Riedböhringen, Germany on Saturday, May 28, 1881 - d. at Rome, Italy on Saturday, November 16, 1968], and “super-ecumenist”, was the confessor of Pope Pius XII, Eugenio Pacelli [Thursday, March 2, 1939 - Thursday, October 9, 1958].

He was involved with Pius XII’s first liturgical reform, the new liturgical translation of the Psalms, which replaced that of Saint Jerome’s Vulgate, so disliked by the Protestants because the Vulgate was the official translation of the Holy Scripture in the Roman Catholic Church and declared to be authentic by the Nineteenth Œcumenical Council, the First Council of Trent - [Thursday, December 13, 1545 A.D. - Wednesday, December 4, 1563 A.D.].

Pope Pius XIII himself provides the proof for this violation of QUO PRIMUM TEMPORE where you read:

“6. You are surely well aware that this Apostolic See has always made careful provision for the schooling of the people committed to its charge in the correct spirit and practice of the liturgy; and that it has been no less careful to insist that the sacred rites should be performed with due external dignity. In this connection We ourselves, in the course of our traditional address to the Lenten preachers of this gracious city of Rome in 1943, urged them warmly to exhort their respective hearers to more faithful participation in the eucharistic sacrifice. Only a short while previously [i.e. before the Lent of 1943], with the design of rendering the prayers of the liturgy more correctly understood and their truth and unction more easy to perceive, We arranged to have the Book of Psalms, which forms such an important part of these prayers in the Catholic Church, translated again into Latin from their original text.[8] Footnote # 8. Therefore, in obedience and conformity to QUO PRIMUM TEMPORE and the Council of Trent, We use a pre-1944 MISSALE ROMANUM. (Of course, this applies to the other liturgical books as well, e.g. the Breviary; the RITUALE ROMANUM; etc.)
