Catholic and Protestant Bibles: What is the Difference?

March 6, 2007

Question: What's the difference between a Catholic Bible and a Protestant one? Is our Old Testament the same as a Jewish Bible? If not, why?

Answer: The most noticeable differences occur in the number of books included and the order in which they have been arranged. Both the Jewish Bible and the Hebrew canon in a Protestant Bible (aka Old Testament) contain 39 books, whereas a Catholic Bible contains 46 books in the Old Testament. In addition, the Greek Orthodox, or Eastern Orthodox, Church accepts a few more books as canonized scripture.

To give you a quick overview of a complicated subject, here's what happened: Several hundred years before the birth of Christ, Babylonian conquerors forced the Jews to leave Jerusalem. Away from their Temple and, often, from their priests, the exiled people forgot how to read, write, and speak Hebrew. After a while, Jewish scholars wanted to make the Bible accessible again, so they translated Hebrew scriptures into the Greek language commonly spoken. Books of wisdom and histories about the period were added, too, eventually becoming so well known that Jesus and the earliest Christian writers were familiar with them. Like the original Hebrew scriptures, the Greek texts, which were known as the Septuagint, were not in a codex or book form as we're accustomed to now but were handwritten on leather or parchment scrolls and rolled up for ease in storage.

Eventually, the Jewish exiles were allowed to return to Jerusalem where they renovated the Temple. Then, in A.D. 70, warring peoples almost completely destroyed the sacred structure, which has never been rebuilt. Without this central place of worship, the Jews began looking to the Bible as their focal point of faith, but to assure the purity of that faith, only Hebrew scriptures were allowed into the Jewish canon. By then, however, the earliest Christians spoke and read Greek, so they continued to use the Septuagint or Greek version of the Bible for many centuries. After the Reformation though, some Christians decided to accept translations into Latin then English only from the Hebrew texts that the Jewish Bible contained, so the seven additional books in the Greek translation became known as the Apocrypha, meaning "hidden." Since the books themselves were no secret, the word seemed ironic or, perhaps, prophetic because, in 1947, an Arab boy searching for a lost goat found, instead, the Dead Sea scrolls, hidden in a hillside cave.

Interestingly, the leather scrolls had been carefully wrapped in linen cloth, coated in pitch, and placed in airtight pottery jars about ten inches across and two feet high where, well-preserved, they remained for many centuries. Later, other caves in the same area yielded similar finds with hundreds of manuscripts no longer hidden. Indeed, the oldest copies of the Bible now known to exist are the Dead Sea scrolls of the Septuagint.

Because of this authentic find from antiquity, many publishers in the twentieth century added back the books of Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, First and Second Maccabees, as well as additions to Esther and Daniel. So now, when an edition of the Bible says "with Apocrypha" on the cover, the extra books from the Septuagint will usually be placed between the Old and New Testaments or at the end of the Bible. Catholic Bibles already contained those books, however, so you'll find them interwoven with other Old Testament books of history and wisdom writings.

For the New Testament, it's a different story — and short. All of the books were written in Greek or Aramaic from the start. Although some debate occurred about which Gospels or Epistles should be included, all Christians eventually accepted all of the same 27 books in the same order. So, as long as you choose an edition that does not add explanatory notes opposed to a Catholic perspective, any reputable translation of the New Testament is fine.

IN CONTRAST TO EASTERN RELIGION, where the body is considered not only inconsequential but even also an illusion hindering IDENTITY OBLITERATING merging with the ONE-- CHRISTIANITY includes God's plan and demonstrated ability and purpose to even RESURRECT our bodies and transform them into similar APPEARING HEAVENLY VERSIONS, BODIES.

This is SOOO true. It is the very reason our actual bodies will one day be in heaven, glorified -- God loves the bodies of His children. This is the basis for the Protestant work ethic and why Christianity is the only way to true psychological health and well-being. God's children work the soil and grow crops and replenish the earth and raise strong children and PREACH THE WORD OF GOD so that the Gospel may benefit all who hear it and rejoice.

At least 1500 years or more of Christians would agree with me and disagree with you.

Christ said turn the other cheek, not bend over - and bend over we shall if we permit the cancer of international Islam to spread and destroy the civilized world.

We have an obligation to civlization as much as to religion, and Islam is as vicious as NAZIsm or Communism.

Thank you so very much for sharing your testimony! And thank you for your encouragements.

However, if we both know truth we would agree regardless.

If we knew Truth perfectly, I would agree that we would agree together. But only God knows objective Truth. And I'm rather confident that we creatures could not contain it. LOL!

IOW, I believe it is possible that both of us can be looking at the same diamond, the same Light – but from different facets and see things a bit differently, and both be seeing Truth – but not the whole Truth.

Thus I am not troubled when I know a Truth – and you testify to a Truth which on the surface may seem to be incompatible. “Either/or” is a way man reasons – but we should not impose that on God. If we do, then we are anthropomorphizing Him.

For that reason, I do not get upset when one Christian sees most clearly “grace by faith and not of works least any man should boast” and another Christian sees most clearly “faith without works is dead.”

For the same reason – no matter what theological differences may separate us in this life, dear kosta50 – I look forward to seeing you on “the other side.”

GREAT POST.

A quick comment on:

Or perhaps He’ll merge me into someone else.

= = =

I don't think so. The closest I could imagine to that would be . . .

IF as some physicists have postulated, there are an infinite number of worlds like our own on which parallel US's exist . . .

such that at EVERY significant decision point, a NEW US and supporting earth and universe are spun off . . .

Then it is CONCEIVABLE to me that God would collapse all the individual US's into ONE US at the conclusion of these grand exercises and boot camps.

Otherwise, I think His investment in the unique individuals THAT HE HAS MADE US is tooooo dear TO HIM to compromise or mangle or combine said IDENTITY/PERSONALITY/PERSONHOOD with anything else but US.

There are evidently a myriad of ways HE CAN MERGE with us WHILE MAINTAINING OUR PERSONALITY/IDENTITY/PERSONHOOD. I do not see HIS CAPACITY FOR MERGING US WITH HIMSELF compromised in the least by HIS maintaining our unique identities.

imho

I will NOT be baited into an attack on fellow Christians. My target is our common enemy - Islam.

I do experience the mind of Christ as described above. Moreover, I easily recognize others who have the same mind. And we speak a different language, a spiritual language which the natural man cannot understand.

= = =

Well put, imho.

I don't know whether there will be any merging, but I don't want to exclude the possibility either. It's up to Christ to do with me according to His will.

the enemy i wolves trying to pervert people away from scripture regardless of the tactics.

protestantism castrated almost a 1000 years of Christianity in Europe leaving it wide open for Islam.

even with the athiests in control of the government in the East, the Christians held out. even with millions of casualities as the soviets murdered Christians...

Like this?

"And I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow Master O'Kolokotronis."

Sure and I will, with all my Irish cousins from Da's side of the family. The local Latin Rite Bishop (a good Irishman who made his dear old mother proud), who as we all know has canonical jurisdiction over the exercise of economia on matters touching upon fasting when the feast of our Great Saint falls in Great Lent, has issued all the Irish a pass for tomorrow! Guess what I'll be doing!:)

Judged by ones own personal morality could be a harrowing adventure.. as a pre-trial.. or hearing.. for the especially hard headed and arrogant.. Who, I ask, could survive the pressure they/some have put on others all their lives.. by lack of forgivness..

INDEED. Very sobering to any thoughtful person.

THX.

You've maintained we read different Bibles on this thread, and I'm beginning to believe you.

Does your Bible contain 1 Corinthians 2:16?

"For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."

Does your Bible contain these verses?

"Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." -- Romans 4:7-8

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." -- Ephesians 4:32

"And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses" -- Colossians 2:13

"And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." -- James 5:15

"I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake." -- 1 John 2:12

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified." -- Hebrews 10: 12-14

And not our own conscience alone, but how we deal with the conscience of others:
= = =

INDEED.

Am reminded of the many reports of the LIFE REVIEW with Jesus at one's side . . .

every subatomic particle of choice, feeling, thought, WORD, experience that one has . . . IS REVIEWED

AND

EVERY OTHER PERSON'S RESPONSES TO EACH PARTICLE OF BEING AND EXPRESSION OF ONE'S SELF IS ALSO REVIEWED. WE SEE THE CONSEQUENCES of all such in minute detail in terms of everyone we have touched--as though we were them--seeing, hearing, feeling what they felt as we interacted with them.

And Jesus wants to know what we have learned--rather--challenges us to articulate what we have learned.

That rings true to me as likely the real deal. We shall see.

HOGWASH. There's more than one way to insult God.

BTW, aren't you the character always ranting about 286 words about women covering heads and speaking in church or being in leadership over men or some such . . .

Interesting.

This thread was started by . . . an article by . . . drum roll . . . a woman.

Mary Harwell Sayler

Yet you seem quite comfortable agreeing with her instruction, teaching over the men on this thread.

I find that more than a little incongruous.

I'm sure you have an . . . explanation.
