(Camden) February 20, 2007 - A Camden minister charged with cyber sex crimes is waiting for an extradition hearing.
The minister, 42-year-old Kevin Ogle, is accused of sending graphic pictures of himself over the internet to a teen girl.
The people he preached to on Sunday held a meeting about his arrest.
A man of God, he's now arrested and charged with cyber sex crimes. Kevin Ogle, 42, is accused of soliciting sex over the internet. Officers say he thought he was chatting with a 14-year-old girl, and instead it was an officer in Georgia.
Deacon Mike Clifton tells WIS, "It was discouraging and disappointing but again a pastor is human just like anybody else is."
Members of Ogle's Camden church held a meeting about his arrest. Despite the charges, they are committed to supporting him through this.
Ogle has been a minister at the Northgate Colonial Baptist Church in Camden for three years. Church members say Ogle was an excellent preacher. Church member Jean Shirley says, "I could not believe it. I thought it had to be an error. I just didn't think that could be our Kevin. I really didn't. He has so much God-given talent."
Investigators say Ogle sent explicit pictures of himself over the internet chat room on Yahoo.com.
It's been a tough case for Captain David Thomley, "It's shock to me and everyone. We graduated high school together. I've known him my whole life."
Ogle has a wife and two young boys.
He's now in the Kershaw County jail. Since the crime was initiated in Georgia, he'll have to be extradited to formally face 11 counts of sexually exploiting a child.
Investigators say Ogle may have had contact with people he may have met online. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-559-TIPS.
It's not waiting in Canada, where the age of consent is 14.
Funny, if this was a Catholic Preist his religion would make the headline. Since he is not it is buried in the story.
Kevin Ogle...what an appropriate name!
Since he was sending photos of himself, Waggle would have been a good one.
SC ping?
Glad to oblige.
**Deacon Mike Clifton tells WIS, "It was discouraging and disappointing but again a pastor is human just like anybody else is."**
What on earth is that supposed to mean?
SC prisons are not nice places.
Yet another well-respected `pillar of the community' bites the dust.
I've read the whole thing three times and all I can come up with is "hey, it's only human for a grown married man to send pictures of his penis to a teenaged girl he's never met. He needs our support!"
People make me sick.
I would guess that the deacon would tell us that his comment is not an excuse for this man's behavior but an acknowledgement of the state of human nature. Human beings are easily tempted to do the most horrific things, especially if they think they can keep them hidden.
Not to nitpick, but shouldn't charges in cases like this be attempted sexual exploitation a child? He attempted to sexually exploit a 14 year old girl, but that girl turned out to be a grown adult, so therefore no success.
Well, it is a TV website and speed is a higher priority than accuracy. I'm pleased that the spelling and grammar seems to be in order, I see some truly awful errors on TV websites.
That sort of attitude speaks volumes about the church.
"The internet: where the men are men, the women are men and the teenage girls are undercover cops."
If it was a Catholic Priest he would have solicited a teenage boy...and would have had a history of being moved around for years by his Bishop after many years of such solicitations.
The scandal of the Roman Catholic homosexual priests is not that there are a few bad apples...there ALWAYS are...it's how they were handled by their superiors--and that was usually just to send them to other parishes, where their history was unknown, and they were left unsupervised.
There was m/f female abuse aas well. The poor handling was done by a very small handfull of Bishops - there is and was no excuse for it but you will not convince me that if it were a different religion it would be played differently.
