The early church did not condemn the idea of the dormition of Mary.
Oh, OK
Well, to be fair, the Popes weren't really on their game during those centuries.
Ping!

Do you have even a hint of evidence that it did?
Enoch and Elijia are the only humans to ascend to heaven without dying first (according to Scripture).
I saw the post before the ping.
I knew it would be you.
Did you drop by the Caesare Borgia/Pope Alex 6 thread? It's interesting and worth your time.

Metatron and Sandalphon.
(In my best Ahnold voice...)
"They'll be back."
St. Matthew 27.52-53 tells us:
"And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose, And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many."
The fate of these resurrected saints is given in Ephesians 4.8 by St. Paul:
"Wherefore he saith: Ascending on high, he led captivity captive; he gave gifts to men."
If the Old Testament Saints were worthy of this honor, as were Enoch and Elijah (and also Moses according to St. Jude 9), why not Our Lord Jesus' own Mother? There is certainly nothing contradictory to scripture in her being honored this way by her Son, because scripture tells us of this very honor being bestowed upon others.
Lastly, the first mention of the Assumption is found in the Greek work "De Obitu S. Dominae", which preceeded the "De Transitu Virginis" about which this article gets so worked up.
The strongest proof of the Assumption is the fact that no Church has ever claimed to have any part whatsoever of the body of the Virgin as a relic, in complete contrast to every other major figure of Christian history. The preservation of bodily relics in shrines is from the earlies part of the Christian era, as can be seen from the ancient shrines to Sts. Peter and Paul erected in Rome immediately after their deaths. The Martyrdom of St. Polycarp, dating from the middle of the second century AD, is explicit about this practice, and reads in its 18th chapter:
"Accordingly, we afterwards took up his bones, as being more precious than the most exquisite jewels, and more purified than gold, and deposited them in a fitting place, whither, being gathered together, as opportunity is allowed us, with joy and rejoicing, the Lord shall grant us to celebrate the anniversary of his martyrdom, both in memory of those who have already finished their course, and for the exercising and preparation of those yet to walk in their steps."
Of what?
Ok. So here's the (bad) logic here: Gelasius and Hormisdas condemned the Transitus Mariae as heretical, therefore the idea of the Assumption is heretical.
Does not follow.
To wit. If I were to say: "Jesus rose from the dead and was turned by God into an archangel."
That statement would be justly declared heretical. Yet the entire statement isn't heretical. Jesus DID rose from the dead. Just the angel bit is patently false.
The papal condemnation means that *something* in the document is heretical. It doesn't mean that *everything* in them is heretical.
So basically you have no such eveidence and are just making assertions with nothing to back it up?
The Dormition of Theotokos was one of the earliests church feats celebrated in the church.
Great article!!! Now do you actually think that historical proof means anything???
Wrong. The dispute was over Moses' body.
Deuteronomy 34:5 clearly states that Moses died.
All this is historical proof of is that Roman Bishops were completely failable.
as did Mary...
