Deliver Us From Evil Movie Synopsis: AND Movie Trailor: http://mcwindows.arcostream.com/media/arco/lionsgate/streams/windowsmedia/deliver_us_from_evil/dufe_Absolute_V18_Trlr_1B_300.wmv

"Deliver Us From Evil" is the story of Father Oliver O'Grady, the most notorious pedophile in the history of the modern Catholic Church. Completely lacking in moral fiber and devoid of any sense of shame or guilt, O'Grady used his charm and authority to violate dozens of faithful Catholic families across Northern California for more than two decades. His victims ranged from a nine month-old infant to the middle-aged mother of another adolescent victim.

Despite early warning signs and complaints from several parishes, the Church, in an elaborate shell game designed to avoid liability and deflect criticism, lied to parishioners and local law enforcement, while continuing to move O'Grady from parish to parish.

Over the years, O'Grady successfully exploited mothers and fathers in order to get to their children. His penchant for sexual mayhem was as essential to him as breathing, and internal Church documents prove that since 1973, he raped and sodomized with the full knowledge of his Catholic superiors.

Remarkably, "Deliver Us From Evil" filmmaker Amy Berg tracked down Father O'Grady and persuaded him to participate in the making of her film. O'Grady's account of his years in various Northern California parishes is chilling and he tells his story without remorse or self-reflection. Also included in the film is never-before-seen footage of the deposition of Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony and his former second-in-command, Monsignor Cain. She also interviews canon lawyer and medieval historian Fr. Thomas Doyle, former priests, lawyers and the abuse survivors themselves.

um wasn't the Passion of the Christ a successful Catholic movie ?

Yes, it was independently-made and Hollywood did its best to prevent its release.

Good article on his departure here.

From the article:

Keating said Mahony listens "too much to his lawyer and not enough to his heart."

He added, however, that "most of America's bishops are fully supportive" of the board he chaired the past year and "have stood up for virtue."

Keating is shown on the DVD. His report was issued and ignored. No surprise there.

Guess I was wrong on time he was with committe and reason he left. See post 39.

The documentary does an excellent job of showing that the RCC protects the priestly class because the RCC believes the priestly class to be closer to God than the laity, a privileged group of men who can do just about anything they want and get away with it under the guise of the cloth.

You would think that such a class of clergy would be nearer their flock than those formed in a different manner. But it's not so. It's not that there aren't good priests, and those priests suffer for the sins of the bad ones, but a priest, by virtue of his formation is already up against a pastoral impediment, IMO.

But God will not be mocked, and each will answer for his sins, just like the rest of us.

He certainly won't be, and the Holy Spirit and Comforter, lovingly attend to the afflicted.

I always thought it was a mistake for those molested to seek their justice with money. It takes what should be a precious wound, one from which much love and good can spring and turn it into something for sale. It is much better to rely on God to sustain you in each and every way.

I hope you see the DVD. It is devastatingly specific.

I don't want to Dr. E. I have my own experience with a nun who was pretty vicious and with priests who were cold and remote. The only thing worse than a cold priest, must be a cold husband.

Serious question: Are priests exempt from the law? Did any of these families ever go to the police?

What is remarkable is that such a person would want to participate in this movie. I wonder if the Catholic Church is still offering him communion?

He can still consecrate a Eucharist for himself anyway. Once granted by the laying on of hands through the duly authorized hierarchic chain of command, his priestly secret superpowers cannot be taken from him (it's that Melchizedek thing). However, he can't be appointed to other franchises in the Roman chain.

They can't have it both ways.

When you look closely, they don't have the freedom and local independence of a Baptist church but there is considerable discretion from bishop to bishop. They tend to close ranks to defend each other. It's much like medieval noblemen safeguarding their own from the king. Or the operation of the modern U.S. Senate.

Are you suggesting that the presence of rotten apples in the hierarchy implies that the concept of hierarchy should be done away with? That's a rather silly solution, if you don't mind me saying so.

Vertical hierarchies are fine as long as people at the top are willing to step up to the plate and do their job. What you are suggesting is that these "rotten apples" will simply fall off the tree. Instead these people normally become decision makers.

Our preachers are driven out of the Church in almost all cases and totally discredited.

GOD IS THE ROCK

Isaiah 51:1, “Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.”

When I get restless,
I feel like I can’t go on,
When it looks hopeless,
Lord you come and bring me a song.
You turn my night into day,
Give me something to say.

Jesus is the Rock and He rolled my blues away,
Jesus is the Rock and He rolled my blues away,
I’m dancing a brand new song’
Dancing all night long,
Jesus is the Rock and He rolled my blues away

Here's a link to the original story from the "New York Times" on Keating's remark that compared the Roman hierarchy to the mafia.

Some Catholic officials act like Mafia,
says Church's pedo-priest investigator

In that same link, there's a follow-up story (both from June, 2003) via the "Worchester Telegram & Gazette" which says...

"Reaction was mixed yesterday to the resignation of Frank Keating as chairman of the National Catholic Review Board, the group charged with overseeing implementation of the church's policy against sexual abuse.

Mr. Keating himself defiantly took another swipe at some Roman Catholic bishops yesterday, defending his comments that compared church leaders to the mafia as he officially resigned as head of a panel keeping tabs on the prelates' sex abuse reforms.

"My remarks, which some bishops found offensive, were deadly accurate. I make no apology," the former Oklahoma governor wrote in his resignation letter to Bishop Wilton Gregory, president of the U.S. hierarchy.

"To resist grand jury subpoenas, to suppress the names of offending clerics, to deny, to obfuscate, to explain away; that is the model of a criminal organization, not my church."

However, Mr. Keating added that "most of America's bishops are fully supportive" of the reform campaign and "have stood up for virtue." He also praised Gregory personally.

"You are a model of the Good Shepherd," he said.

Timothy P. Staney of Worcester, who alleges he was sexually abused as a boy and teenager by a priest and religious education teacher, reacted sharply to the news of Mr. Keating's resignation, and his comparison of the church to the Mafia.

"I have personally seen an instruction from an official of the Vatican, Cardinal Ratzinger, which instructed all bishops of the Catholic Church worldwide to characterize the criminal sexual assault of minors along with violation of the sacraments of the church and thereafter to handle those crimes under the rubric of the pontifical secret," he said.

"While Gov. Keating may have been speaking metaphorically, the Ratzinger conduct is not a metaphor. It is criminal obstruction of justice on an international scale. At least the mafia doesn't claim to be acting in God's interests," Mr. Staney said..."

Wasn't Keating a former prosecutor turned governor of Oklahoma? Sounds like he didn't let the pedo-priests off the hook one bit.

That Keating was a pretty outstanding Oklahoma governor as I recall.

As for the abusee's allegation that he saw such an incriminating document by Ratzinger, I think I'd want to see such a document first. There have been some wild allegations along with legitimate charges of abuse. My first question would be how he got to see such a sensitive document when he was suing them.

I didn't say all Catholics are perfect.

Wait a second here. We are talking about the violation of one of the cornerstones of RC social doctrine. Ask any person on the street what the Catholic Church teaches on the issue of abortion and I bet >90% will respond correctly.

We are not talking about some sin that any one of us will fall into at any given moment but one of the big ones.

The question is why isn't the church disciplining pro-abortion politicians? Why aren't the Bishops stepping in and fulfilling their responsibilities? Where is Rome? Isn't that why you have a Pope; to serve as the head of your church and make sure things are going the way they are supposed to be going? Why is he silent?

You guys never sin. Especially the ministers. Never any cover ups.

We have a place for those who break the law. It's called prison. But then again, so do ya'll, it's called a new diocese. Oh, the latest big name to violate the trust placed in him lost his pulpit.

Perfect communion of persons in every way.

We never claimed such.

It is like perfection on earth.

Clearly a Romanist caricature. We know that there is no perfection until we reach Heaven. Maybe the Catholic idea of perfection is to do away with all of us heretics who don't toe the Roman line.

Did this DVD mention that Rome said back in the early 1960's that homosexuals, even chaste ones, were not to be ordained to the priesthood ... and the American bishops ignored that directive?

Do you really believe that Rome choosing not to enforce its directives on the American Bishops somehow absolves Rome of any responsibility?

It doesn't. It makes Rome even MORE culpable.

If the American bishops can ignore the directives of the Vatican magisterium on a matter as important as this, then why should the people in the pews trust either of them with matters of even greater importance?

Gamecock it is clear that you are called to fix all moral issues with anyone who claims to follow Christ through His Catholic Church. Please come and begin your work. Once you have come into the fullness of the Church, call a meeting and communicate your vision. I pray the results will be as the Holy Spirit desires.

We know that there is no perfection until we reach Heaven.

Exactly my point. I am not the one taunting Catholics by acting as if there is no sin in any of Christ's Churches except the Catholic Church.

Maybe the Catholic idea of perfection is to do away with all of us heretics who don't toe the Roman line.

Who is pointing out heretics and calling for them to be "do[ne] away with"?
