VATICAN CITY -- The Vatican on Thursday reaffirmed the value of celibacy for priests after a summit led by Pope Benedict XVI that was spurred by a married African archbishop who has been excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.

Matthew 19:12
"...because they have renounced marriage for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Whoever can accept this ought to accept it."
GOOD!!! I say if you don't want to be celibate Don't become a priest - become a minister or reverend. When you go into the priesthood you know what it entails. If you can't do it then leave the priesthood.
Does celibacy include not molesting boys?
Yes. Thanks for asking.
Celibacy is specifically the state of being unmarried.
Good verse!
"I say if you don't want to be celibate Don't become a priest - become a minister or reverend."
This whole issue seems strange to me as an Orthodox Christian. Our priests are married, as you know. In fact, we prefer married priests for parish work. But that aside, every Christian knows the rules for Latin rite clergy. If one wants to be a priest in a church in communion with the Pope and still be married, become a priest of one of the Eastern Churches in communion with Rome, all of which allow married men to be ordained. This business of demanding that Rome change this rule is simply self-centered pride, a lack of humility which should mark one as unfit for Latin Rite priesthood.
I don't know...
Does being a protestant "minister" have a requirement of cheating on your wife (lost count of how many prots have done this)?
Does being a protestant "minister" require you to troll for gay prostitutes (Haggard)?

You know that.
Does every thread on celibacy require a tired nonsequitur?
Very good.
Priestly celibacy is of special value in our age when so few examples of continency exist.
Thanks, I just wanted to say you really summed up the issue well and it is appreciated. I do pray our two Churches can finally be re-united ending the milennium of pain and seperation.
It's easier than thinking.
"Dog bites man" story.
I never believed for a minute that the Church would throw out the celibacy rule because of the actions of a disobedient archbishop. If it had done so, what message would this have given to this man and to other Catholics who disobey the Church? What message would it have sent to priests who have faithfully lived out their vows of celibacy?
Even if the Church permitted married men to be priests, as it once did, it would never allow priests to marry after ordination because that is something that the Church has never permitted. It would be a radical change, completely contrary to the Church's tradition. Therefore, all of the men who left the priesthood over the last 40 years in order to get married, will never be permitted to return to their ministry. And that is how it should be.
