Defending the Roman Catholic Faith: Catholic Apologetics (vanity)
Oct. 19 | Global2010

Posted on 10/19/2006 12:19:52 PM PDT by Global2010

Hi Ya'll,

Need some quick to the point answers to what you all as Roman Catholics are asked by non Catholics.

It is my homework assignment and I told my teacher I would post this vanity to help sort out ???? that I will be asked as a Catholic in years to come.

I am not having a problem with ???? about chastity, prudence, temptations, reading the Holy Bible ect...

I know in my head answers to ???? below but having a hard time articulating them.

Questions about our Mother Mary and the Saints, going to Heaven/purgatory takes more then just saving Grace (once saved always saved non Catholic Christians often say).

What ??? are you all often faced to answer? I don't want to go into a deep theological discussion with other non Catholics just a quick to the point answer would suffice.

My idea of just telling them to take an Adult Conservative Catechism Class and they will have all the answers is not really acceptable in defending the faith (lol but it does swiftly end discussion).

Dear Global I have no problem discussing issues for the right purpose. But I ask that you read post 105 very carefully. line by line and word by word. I don't know Silly and have never corresponded with him/her but that pretty much encapsulates my take on the issues. Jesus is more importamt than the things which a lot of people/churches put forth time and energy into. Jesus taught a simple message of love and was in constant struggle with local church authorities. If He came back today, it would be no different.

To each his own.

I am in a study/learning phase and have not enough understanding or knowledge to articulate my faith.

I did not start this thread to persuade anyone but to collect data for an assignment.

Be well and God Bless.
I am ending my time on this thread so that peruse the links others have been so generous in giving and study other info posted here on the subject of Catholic Apologetics.

I know you are a good person. and earnest. But I say again Jesus taught a simple message of love. If you cannot articulate your faith, something is wrong. The Ten Commandments are the standard and properly understood we cannot attain to that standard without Gods help. Prayer, study the scriptures and meditate upon the life of Christ. These are all the tools you need to share your faith with others. I wish you well and God bless.

I would suggest that the poster begin reading the Catholic Daily Caucus threads every day to get a good idea of the specifics of the faith. Also click out the links to the Catholic websites included in the thread, the information provided would be most helpful in compiling a report.

Back it up with scripture...

You should know better than this, if you've read the New Testament, or, better yet, listened to it on tape or CD.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The whole New Testament discuses the way to God through belief and faith. Paul preached numerous times against ways to God other than the Gospel.

Cite for me any Biblical authority to pray to other than God through Jesus.

"Also if ya got a bambino on the boob it also will naturally keep you infertile"

Ummm.....wrong. Baby numero uno, postpartum eight weeks and fertility returned. Second one, postpartum seven weeks, fertility returned. Breast feeding only. With baby number one, even trying to do Sheila Kippley's ecological breastfeeding.

Every woman I know had fertilty return before their baby was a year old, all were breastfeeding. Sometimes they learned in a more surprising fashion, i.e. positive pregnancy test when the baby is five months old. It's a joke between couples that nursing truly prevents pregnancy.

I don't want to distract from the good points that you are making, I just don't want your whole argument to lose credibilty due to this mistake.

Mary was born without Original sin.

Yet she had free will.

She concieved(sic) Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

The other two ???? I have to work on. Thanks for posting them to me.

How do you know that Mary was born without Original Sin?

How do you square this with what Rabbi Paul says :

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
In his epistle to the Romans Rabbi Paul says that ALL have sinned and have fallen short of the Glory of God.

Does this not include Mary?

Where in the Holy Word of G-d does it say that Mary is free from sin?

Why would Mary need to be free from sin?

If she were free from all sin, she would not need a redeemer.

Biblical authority to pray to other than God through Jesus.

Two things you don't understand.

1. The Church does not need a Biblical authority to do anything. She already has all the authority anyone can want form Jesus directly: "whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven".

2. Prayer to saints is a prayer to God through Jesus.

It is not complicated.

A prayer asking a dead saint for intercession is a prayer to a saint and not to God through Jesus.

Paul warned his churches about those who would alter the Gospels. In the post you're responding to, Jesus said it clearly, without ambiguity and left no doubt about the procedure. Paul refused to let even someone fall at his feet.

Pray to God through the Christ and leave the saints alone.

This kind of alteration, expansion and misinterpretation of doctrine by man is precisely why Jesus criticized the Pharisees and scribes.

This is your opinion. With respect, I'll stick to the previously cited by me authority of the Church on this matter, and recommend you do the same.

Apostles' Creed

1. I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:

2. And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:

3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:

4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell:

5. The third day he rose again from the dead:

6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:

7. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:

8. I believe in the Holy Ghost:

9. I believe in the holy catholic church: the communion of saints:

10. The forgiveness of sins:

1l. The resurrection of the body:

12. And the life everlasting. Amen.

There is a great Catholic website called Relevant Radio:

http://www.relevantradio.com/NETCOMMUNITY/Page.aspx?&pid=534&srcid=-2

Excellent resource.

Father Frank Hoffman does a wonderful job explaining the Theology of the Body, written as an encyclical by Pope John Paul, The Great. Father Hoffman is on Thursday mornings at 7:00 CST.

If you had a choice between a] defending Catholicism to someone or b] sharing Jesus' love and gospel, what would be do?

My friend, you are separating the two. If you understand the breath and scope of the Catholic faith, it cannot exist without the love of Jesus and the Gospel.

When you defend the faith, you defend everything that is in accordance with the love of our Savior.

There is not distinction.

Yes, you'll stick to the ordinations of men, as Jesus recommended against. I'm not Catholic and I hold the Bible the final authority, and recommend you do the same.
