As many of you already know, we are entering into the fall High Holy Days, comprised of the Feasts of Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles. Just as the spring Feastdays celebrate the First Coming of Messiah Yeshua, and Shavuot (Pentecost) celebrates the giving of the Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) to the Ekklesia in between the visitations of Yeshua, the Fall Feastdays look forward to His Second Comingand in particular, the Feast of Trumpets looks forward to His Glorious Appearance in the clouds of heaven!
The day which this year falls on September 23 (beginning at sundown the previous night) is known by many names, but is little understood. The most commonly used today is Rosh Hashanah, the Head of the Year or New Year, and is regarded as the start of the Jewish civil calendar. (The religious calendar begins on the first of Nisan, fourteen days before Passover, in accordance with Exo. 12:2.) For this reasons, Jews will greet each other with the phrase, Lshana tova u-metukah, May you have a good and sweet new year or simply Shanah tova, A good year. In anticipation of this sweet new year, it is customary to eat a sweet fruit, like an apple or carrot dipped in honey.
The Talmud records the belief that In the month of Tishri, the world was created (Rosh Hashanah 10b), and its probably due to this belief that it became known as the Jewish New Year. The belief that the world was created on Rosh Hashanah came out of an anagram: The letters of the first word in the Bible, In the beginning . . . (Bresheit) can be rearranged to say, 1 Tishri (Aleph bTishri). Perhaps because so little is directly said in Scripture about this dayunlike all of the other Feastdays, there is no historical precedent given to explain why Rosh Hashanah should be celebratedthe rabbis also speculated that Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Samuel were all born on this day.
However, thats not its Biblical name, which is Yom Teruah, the Day of the [Trumpet] Blast:
And YHVH spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing (Heb. zikrown teruah) [of trumpets], an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto YHVH. (Lev. 23:23-25)In each of these passages, Ive placed trumpets in brackets because its not actually in the Hebrew text; however, teruah can and usually does mean to sound the trumpet (though it can mean to shout with a voice as well) and the use of a trumpet on this day is considered so axiomatic that there is literally no debate in Jewish tradition on the matter. Specifically, the trumpet used is the shofar. The shofar is traditionally always made from the horn of a ram, in honor of the ram that God substituted for Isaac, and never from a bulls horn, in memory of the sin of the golden calf. And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing (teruah) [the trumpets] unto you. (Num. 29:1)
The shofar first appears in Scripture as heralding the visible appearance of God coming down on Mt. Sinai to meet with His people (Ex. 19:16-19). It is also linked with His Coming in Zec. 9:14 and with Him going up (making aliyah) to Jerusalem in Psa. 47:5. Small wonder then that Yeshua said He would Come again with the sound of a trumpet, a shofar, in Mat. 24:31, which is echoed by Shaul (Paul) in 1 Th. 4:16 and 1 Co. 15:52. Indeed, many commentators have recognized that by the last trump, Shaul was referring to the final shofar blast, called the Tekia HaGadol, of the Feast of Trumpets.
This visitation by YHVH is closely associated with the second of this Feastdays names: Yom Zikkroun, the Day of Remembrance. This is not primarily meant to be a day when the people remember God, but when God remembers His peoplenot that He has forgotten them, but in which He fulfills His promises to them by Coming to them. In Isa. 27:13, it is the instrument used to call Gods people Israel back to the Land. In Psalm 27, which is traditionally read in the month leading up to Yom Teruah, we see the Psalmist looking forward to God rescuing him from his enemies:
Among the rabbis, the shofar is often associated with the Coming of the Messiah and the Resurrection of the Dead as well. According to the Alphabet Midrash of Rabbi Akiva, seven shofars announce successive steps of the resurrection process, with Zechariah 9:14 quoted as a proof text: And Adonai the Lord will blow the shofar (Stern, David H., Jewish New Testament Commentary, 489f). And it is the shofar that the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to blow when the Son of David, our righteous one, will reveal himself, as it is said, And the Lord GOD will blow the shofar (Tanna debe Eliyahu Zutta XXII). Its interesting that the rabbis, without the benefit of the New Covenant writings, have come to the same conclusions as the Apostles: That YHVH would visit His people in the person of the Messiah and raise the dead on Yom Teruah (also in the Bablyonian Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 16b). On Yom Teruah, the shofar not only rouses the people from their complacency, but the very dead from their graves. (See Job 19:25-27, Isa. 26:19, and Dan. 12:2 for the Tanakhs primary passages on the Resurrection.)Though an host should encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear:
Though war should rise against me,
In this will I be confident . . .For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion:
In the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me;
He shall set me up upon a rock. . .
The shofar is an instrument that is very much associated with war (Jdg. 3:27, 2 Sa. 20:1, Neh. 4:18-22, Ezk. 33:3-6). It was used to destroy the walls of Jericho (Jdg. 6:20). In Joel 2:1, it sounds the start of the Day of the Lord, the time in which God will make war on His enemies: Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in My holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the Day of YHVH cometh, for it is nigh at hand (cf. v. 15). This again matches perfectly with the NT, where Shaul describes the Lords coming with a trumpet immediately preceding the Day of the Lord (1 Th. 4:16, 5:2).
This brings us to the next name for this Feastday, Yom HaDin, Judgment Day. Not only did the shofar sound the call for war, but also the coronation of kings (2 Sa. 15:10; 1 Ki. 1:34, 29; 2 Ki. 9:13, 11:12-14). Therefore, the rabbis have always associated this day with Gods sovereign Kingship over all mankind: On Rosh Hashanah all human beings pass before Him as troops, as it is said, The LORD looketh from heaven; He beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of His habitation He looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashioneth their hearts alike; He considereth all their works (Rosh Hashanah 6b, quoting Psa. 53:13-15). To remember Gods Kingship, it is traditional to eat round objects to remind us of Gods crown (oriental crowns being shaped as skullcaps instead of circlets). For example, challah is made to be round instead of braided as it normally is.
Because this day is associated with Gods judgment, it is also considered a time of repentance (tshuva) in preparation for Yom Kippur. The Casting (Tashlikh) Ceremony, in which observant Jews gather together at the shores of oceans, lakes, and rivers and cast in stones and/or crumbs of bread to symbolize casting off their sins, is performed on this day to a prayer comprised of Mic. 7:18-20, Psa. 118:5-9, Psa. 33 and 130, and often finishing with Isa. 11:9.
The Talmud (ibid.) goes on to say that on this day, all mankind is divided into three types of people. The wholly righteous were immediately written in the Book of Life (Exo. 32:33, Psa. 69:28) for another year. The wholly wicked were blotted out of the Book of Life, condemned to die in the coming year. Those in between, if they truly repented before the end of Yom Kippur, could likewise be scribed in the Book of Life for another year. For this reason, a common greeting at this time is Lshana tova tikatevu, which means, May you be inscribed [in the Book of Life] for a good new year.He will turn again,
He will have compassion upon us;
He will subdue our iniquities;
And Thou wilt cast all their sins
Into the depths of the sea.
(Mic. 7:19)
The Bible, of course, is clear that one is written in the Lambs Book of Life (cf. Php. 4:3; Rev. 3:5, 13:8, 17:8, and 21:27) not by ones own righteousness, but by receiving the Messiahs righteousness by faith, trusting in Him, and that there is no in-between; one either trusts God or one doesnt. Nevertheless, a great eschatological truth is preserved for us in this rabbinical tradition. At the time of Yeshuas Second Coming, all mankind will be divided into three groups. Those who have already trusted in the Messiah will be Resurrected and Raptured to be with Him immediately upon His Coming on the clouds of the sky. Those who have taken the mark of the Beast and have chosen to remain with the Wicked One will be slated to die in the Day of the Lord, which for reasons that are beyond the scope of this essay to address, I believe will last for about a year.
However, there will also be a third group, who neither had believed in the Messiah until they saw Him Coming on the clouds but who also had not taken the mark of the Beast. Many of these will be Jews, who will mourn at His coming and so have a fount of forgiveness opened to them (Rev. 1:7, Zec. 12:10-13:2)most prominently, the 144,000 of Rev. 7 and 14. Others will be Gentiles who will be shown mercy because they showed mercy to the children of God (Mat. 25:31ff). These are given the opportunity to repent during the period between the fulfillment of the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonment, called the Days of Awea reference, I believe, to the Day of the Lord.
Finally, this day is known as Yom HaKeseh, the Hidden Day. It was a day that could not be calculated, only looked for. Ancient Israel kept its calendar simply by observing the phases of the moon. If a day were overcast, it might cause a delay in the observance of the beginning of the month, the new moon (Rosh Chodesh), the first tiny crescent of light. Every other Feast was at least a few days after the beginning of the month so that it could be calculated and prepared for in advance. For example, after the new moon that marked the beginning of the month of Nisan, the observant Jew knew that he had fourteen days to prepare for the Passover.
Not so Yom HaKeseh. In the absence of reliable astronomical charts and calculations (which were made only centuries after God commanded the Feasts to be observed), the Feast of Trumpets could be anticipated, estimated to be arriving soon, but until two or more witnesses reported the first breaking of the moons light after the darkest time of the month, no one knew the day or hour. Therefore, it was a tradition not to sleep on Rosh Hashanah, but to remain awake and alert, a tradition alluded to by Shaul: But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober (1 Th. 5:4-6).
Because of the difficulty of alerting the Jews in the Diaspora when the Sanhedron had decreed the start of the Feast to be, it became traditional to celebrate the first and second day of Tishri together as Yoma Arikhta, One Long Day. Is this meant to remind us, perhaps, of when another Yhoshua (Yeshua) won against his enemies because God cast down great hailstones (like the hailstones of Rev. 16:21) and called upon the Sun to stand still so that they would not escape (Jos. 10:10ff)?
Yom Teruah is a day which ultimately calls all of Gods people together in repentance in anticipation of the glorious Second Coming, in which He will once again visit His people in the Person of the Messiah Yeshua to Resurrect the dead, awaken the living, and judge all mankind together.
Shalom, and Maranatha!
From an earlier footnote:
35 [Comp. Recognitions, ii. 50, 51, 61-65. The emphasis laid upon supernatural visions in the remainder of the Homily has been supposed to convey an insinuation against the revelations to the Apostle Paul.-R.]
Chapter XVI.-None But Evil Demons Appear to the Impious.
And Peter said: "I remember that I promised to prove this point, and to give my proofs in regard to it from Scripture and apart from Scripture. sand now listen to what I say. We know that there are many (if you will pardon me the statement; and if you don't, I can appeal to those who are present as judges) who worship idols, commit adultery, and sin in every way, and yet they see true visions and dreams, and some of them have also apparitions of demons. For I maintain that the eyes of mortals cannot see the incorporeal form of the Father or Son, because it is illumined by exceeding great light. Wherefore it is not because God envies, but because He pities, that He cannot be seen by man who has been turned into flesh. For he who sees God cannot live. For the excess of light dissolves the flesh of him who sees; unless by the secret power of God the flesh be changed into the nature of light, so that it can see light, or the substance of light be changed into flesh, so that it can be seen by flesh. For the power to see the Father, without undergoing any change, belongs to the Son alone. But the just shall also in like manner behold God;39 for in the resurrection of the dead, when they have been changed, as far as their bodies are concerned, into light, and become like the angels, they shall be able to see Him. Finally, then, if any angel be sent that be may he seen by a man, he is changed into flesh, that he may be able to be seen by flesh. For no one can see the incorporeal power not only of the Son, but not even of an angel. But if one sees an apparition, he should know that this is the apparition of an evil demon.
Chapter XVIII.-The Nature of Revelation.
"Thus to me also was the Son revealed by the Father. Wherefore I know what is the meaning of revelation, having learned it in my own case. For at the very time when the Lord said, `Who do they say that I am? '47 and when I heard one saying one thing of Him, and another another, it came into my heart to say (and I know not, therefore, how I said it), `Thou art the Son of the living God.'48 But He, pronouncing me blessed, pointed out to me that it was the Father who had revealed it to me; and from this time I learned that revelation is knowledge gained without instruction, and without apparition and dreams. And this is indeed the case. For in the soul49 which has been placed in us by50 God, there is all the truth; but it is covered and revealed by the hand of God, who works so far as each one through his knowledge deserves.51 But the declaration of anything by means of apparitions and dreams from without is a proof, not that it comes from revelation, but from wrath. Finally, then, it is written in the law, that God, being angry, said to Aaron and Miriam,52 `If a prophet arise from amongst you, I shall make myself known to him through visions and dreams, but not so as to my servant Moses; because I shall speak to him in an outward appearance, and not through dreams, just as one will speak to his own friend.' You see how the statements of wrath are made through visions and dreams, but the statements to a friend are made face to face, in outward appearance, and not through riddles and visions and dreams, as to an enemy.
Chapter XIX.-Opposition to Peter Unreasonable.
"If, then, our Jesus appeared to you in a vision, made Himself known to you, and spoke to you, it was as one who is enraged with an adversary; and this is the reason why it was through visions and dreams, or through revelations that were from without, that He spoke to you. But can any one be rendered fit for instruction through apparitions? And if you will say, `It is possible, 'then I ask, `Why did our teacher abide and discourse a whole year to those who were awake? 'And how are we to believe your word, when you tell us that He appeared to you? And how did He appear to you, when you entertain opinions contrary to His teaching? But if you were seen and taught by Him, and became His apostle for a single hour, proclaim His utterances, interpret His sayings, love His apostles, contend not with me who companied with Him. For in direct opposition to me, who am a firm rock, the foundation of the Church,53 you now stand. If you were not opposed to me, you would not accuse me, and revile the truth proclaimed by me, in order that I may not be believed when I state what I myself have heard with my own ears from the Lord, as if I were evidently a person that was condemned and in bad repute.54 But if you say that I am condemned, you bring an accusation against God, who revealed the Christ to me, and you inveigh against Him who pronounced me blessed on account of the revelation. But if, indeed, you really wish to work in the cause of truth, learn first of all from us what we have learned from Him, and, becoming a disciple of the truth, become a fellow-worker with us."
For the Noahide; animals, birds, and fish may be killed for food in any way that man deems to be efficient and it should be done as humanely as possible. For the Noahide, the non-Jewish believer, slaughtering of animals or birds does not have to be in a ritual manner as with Jews. But this was a Commandment which had to be enforced and taken up by the non-Jews voluntarily if the Jew was to partake of the food at any table fellowship with non-Jews. Again this was voluntary and is a perfect example of choosing those things that please God as instructed of non-Jews in Isaiah 56. The non-Jews might not have been given such a commandment but if they were to share table fellowship with Jews then it was up to them to voluntarily take upon themselves those commandments requiring ritual slaughter if fellowship with their Jewish brethren was to ensue. Remember that such table fellowship is the example and rehearsal of the Marriage Supper where both peoples of God; both Jew and non-Jew share in the supper of God!
This is where we begin to encounter problems in the Antioch incident and why the men from James began to rebuke Paul for the manner of table fellowship which was being practiced in his congregation. The Jews had no options: either be excluded or compromise their Covenant and Commandments and sin! The men from James discerned that the table fare, which had come from the Gentile market-place had not been prepared, ritually slaughtered, drained of all blood, and most likely not tithed of, which was required by the Covenant and Laws of Moses. Even Peter and Barnabas and other Jews in the congregation had been misled by such practices as condoned under the auspices of being "in Christ" and "becoming all things to all men that they might win some". There were certain procedures involved in the killing of the animal which was commanded to be done in as merciful a manner as possible before the animal was considered "kosher" for consumption by the Jew. The practice of such relaxation of such commandments was not acceptable to the men from Jerusalem and nor it should be.
Those of us you are Christian sabbatarians believe He did precisely that, by the examples of His resurrection on the first day,
The case that he was resurrected on Saturday is much stronger biblically as Diego has pointed out numerous times.
His pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the first day,
The significance was that the outpouring of the spirit happened on Pentecost, one of God's Holy Days. This shows once again how important God's holy days are. They foretell and remind us of prophetic events in God's plan of salvation.
Most of these are suppositions to justify historical change. The fact is that Christians were keeping the true sabbath for quite a while after the death of Christ. In fact, it took an official edict from the Catholic church at the council of Laodecia in 360 AD to STOP Christians from observing the true sabbath:
CHRISTIANS must not judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day, rather honouring the Lord's Day; and, if they can, resting then as Christians. But if any shall be found to be judaizers, let them be anathema from Christ. (Canon 29 [A.D. 360]
This is well over 300 years, 3 centuries AFTER the death of Christ.
Changing a commandment of God, one of the ten commandments, would be a huge controversy in the biblical church. Yet it is never, ever mentioned as an issue in the bible. Yet somehow it becomes an issue 3 centuries later?
{For old covenant sabbatarians, the painful fact remains that nowhere in the NT do we find the Jewish/gentile church worshipping on the last day sabbath of the Jews.)
Nonsense.
Act 13:42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
Only gentiles are left. The gentiles want to be preached to, they want to go the church, the NEXT sabbath. They understood that the normative day of worship, the commanded day of worship by the God they wanted to worship, was the sabbath.
Act 13:43 Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
Act 13:44 And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
The whole city came to church to hear the word of God...on the sabbath, as God commanded, a holy convocation:
Lev 23:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.
Lev 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings
Those who want to learn about God, convene on the day he said to convene on, the sabbath day. In Acts 13, if the whole city didn't come to hear about God on the sabbath, they didn't hear about God.
Decayed/expired law = Judaizing Clergy.
I know some folks like to slice and dice the Scriptures, so let's look at the entire context:
But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on." Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: ... So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. (Act 13:14-16,42-45)As far as we can tell, this was not church. It was an apostate Jewish synagogue were Paul was preaching the gospel of salvation thorugh Jesus Christ, and where some gentiles came to hear his message.
Paul was preaching on the sabbath because that was the custom of the Jews. The gentiles came out to hear Paul on the sabbath because that was his customary day to preach to the apostate Jews.
This is the same sort of Jewish synagogue where Paul was often cast out of for his preaching of the good news of Jesus Christ. In fact in this context we also learn:
Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region. But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. (vv. 48-50)So to suggest that old covenantr sabbath day worship is being enjoined on the church by this sort of event is pure nonsense.
Old covenant sabbath day worship was always associated with the apostate Jewish synagogue, not the new covenant assembly.
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." -- 2 Corinthians 5:17
Yeshua, Iesous,Y'hoshua,Yoshua,Yehoshua, or Joshua. The names chosen in the Bible are very often not arbitrary, but chosen to convey a message. The important thing is to discern that all these names convey a contaction of Jehovah Oshua or Jehovah Saves
Speaking only for myself....I don't embrace it because it is the "Catholic Sabbath" and I believe very little of what they teach.
The other, more obvious reason is the fact that scripture does not ask us to ignore the Seventh Day (Sabbath) of the Lord.
Paul's commission was not to the Jews.....why would he be preaching to them?
"But when [Paul and his party] departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. " (Acts 13:14)
"Now it happened in Iconium that [Paul and Barnabas] went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed. " (Acts 14:1)
"Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, ... Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews." (Acts 17:2,10)
"And [Paul] reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks." (Acts 18:4)
"And [Paul] came to Ephesus, and left them there; but he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews." (Acts 18:17)
"And [Paul] went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God." (Acts 19:8)
Take it up with Paul. In every place he would first go to the Jews in their synagogue, and then, when he was rejected, he would go to the gentiles. No doubt this provoked the Jews to even more animus against Paul.
The reason He went to the synagogues was not to preach to the Jews....but the Gentiles. The Jews just happened to also be there because the Gentiles worshiped on the Sabbath also......with them.
Don't you see this simple scripture lesson regarding the Sabbath worship of the Gentiles?
Why did he not just say to the Gentiles as he entered the synagogue...."Hey boys, let me finish up with these Jews...and I'll catch you all tomorrow?" the reason is obvious. The Gentiles also worshiped on the Sabbath!
"So Paul still remained a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow. And he came to Ephesus, and left them there; but he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews." (Acts 18:18,19)
Notice how it say that when Paul came to Ephesus, he left Priscilla and Aquila behind, and went to the synagogue alone. Now this is an odd statement if the synagogue was the church, and a legitimate place of Christian worship.
Why would Paul leave his fellow Christians behind while he went into the synagogue if it was a true place of worship?
Do you actually read any of these accounts before spouting off? It says he went in to reason with the Jews.
"Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to [the Jews], and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, " (Acts 17:1,2)
The fact that there were gentiles there is a secondary considertion. When the Jews would not hear him in the synagogue, he went directly to the gentiles.
"And [Paul] reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks. ... But when [the Jews] opposed him and blasphemed, he shook his garments and said to them, 'Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.'" (Acts 18:5,6)
Because he was a Jew and wanted to worship???? Maybe Priscilla and Aquila had an errand to run or something.
If you notice further down in verses 24-26 Priscilla and Aquila are now in the synagogue listening to a Jew named Apollos....and then invite him to there home after services.
Why are you so adamant about observing the Catholic Sabbath in light of scriptural proof it is wrong?
[Acts 17:4] Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God fearing Greeks and not a few prominent women.
Why do you suppose we again see Gentile Christians worshiping in the synagogues with the Jews?
Why do you worship on the Catholic Sabbath?
In the heat of the debate my fingers err.
and then invite him to "their" home.......
Apollos apprears to be dealing in the synagogue in much the same way as Paul, except without the knowledge. This was not a Christian worship service. That obvious by the fact the Priscilla and Aquila took him aside to help him calrify his views on Jesus Christ.
Why are you so adamant about observing the Catholic Sabbath in light of scriptural proof it is wrong?
Your "proof" amounts to nothing. The universal (catholic) church has interpreted the NT accounts for 2 millennia accurately regarding the change of the weekly sabbath from the last day to the first day. A few cults have opposed this view, but their exegetical efforts have amounted to straw.
Why do you suppose we again see Gentile Christians worshiping in the synagogues with the Jews?
God fearing greeks was a term used to describe gentiles who were following in Jewish ways but had not yet become full proselytes. It is not a synonym for "Christian".
Whether it be arians who deny the deity of Christ, seventh day sabbatarians to seek to liave according to old covenant shadows, or chiliasts who look for a fleshy, judaistic millenium, thankfully such views have been few and far between.
Amen.
The point I am making is that Apollos is in the synagogue.....worshiping [speaking with great fervor and teaching about Jesus accurately] but knowing only of the baptism of John. Priscilla and Aquila are listening and decide to take him home so they can further explain the way of God more adequately.
Now, my friend......you may wish to call this something else, but I say that this is a prime example of Jews and Christians worshiping together in the synagogues.
Why do you have such a disdain for God's Holy Sabbaths?
