The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has named Archbishop Raymond Burke of the Archdiocese of St. Louis as a member of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature. This is a tribunal of appeal from the Tribunal of the Roman Rota. It is the highest court of appeal available in matters concerning the Church's tribunals. Other members named include Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, and Archbishop Lluís Martínez Sistach of the Archdiocese of Barcelona.
Catholic ping!
This sounds like a "supreme" honor!

Catholic Politicians beware. Burke thinks that all Catholic Politicians should be Pro-Life. He thinks that they should adhere to Catholic Doctrine.
A new "cardinal" in St. Louis.
Cardinal Burke should be ideal for serving in this important position.
The three nominations are quite interesting...the Prefect for Catholic Education (seminaries anyone?) and two archbishops of countries that are front and center in the homosex marriage debate. And the Pope annnounced the nominations right before leaving for Valencia.

great point, I think you are on to something. Cardinal Grocholewski (the Prefect for Catholic Education) is the one that wrote the letter last November that said the church can't allow priestly ordination of homosexuals, or of those who "gay" culture. God bless the Pope.
Fr. Altier's oppressor.
Stories like these and the discussions following are very interesting and helpful. Thanks!
No, you're thinking of Archbishop Harry Flynn of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Archbishop Burke is from St. Louis.
Archbishop Burke is the one who told pro-abort Catholic politicians that they would be denied communion in the St. Louis archdiocese.
Archbishop Burke, however, has excommunicated the Polish priest, Marek Bozek, for disobeying his bishop and taking a job as priest of a troublesome parish against explicit orders.
You're welcome. Abp. Burke is one of the good ones, although the St. Agnes parishioners would probably disagree with me.
Burke will join the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura alongside Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, the prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, and Archbishop Lluis Martinez Sistach of Barcelona. (The members of the Signatura serve on it in addition to the primary posts they hold.)
Grocholewski served for 17 years as secretary and then prefect of the Tribunal before being named to head Catholic Ed in 1999, and Burke's a veteran of the place as well. The 58 year-old St Louis prelate was the first American to serve as its Defender of the Bond from 1990-94, when he was named bishop of his home diocese of LaCrosse. His presence was noted in Rome last week for the Peter and Paul celebrations.
From the US, Cardinal Edward Egan of New York and Bishop Thomas Doran of Rockford -- both former uditori of the Roman Rota -- also serve on the Signatura, which hears appeals of cases on a highly selective basis. Its American docket has received much more attention in recent years given high-profile appeals of parish closings and, especially since 2002, an uptick in recourses from priests who have been administratively removed on allegations of sex-abuse. At least one recourse case alleging a US bishop's violations of due process against an accused priest has been accepted by the Signatura for its review.
Beyond being an accolade for his legal aecumen, Burke's appointment to the high court could be seen as a vindication for the canonical strategy he employed in the case of St Louis' St Stanislaus parish. In December, following the refusal of the parish's board of directors to acknowledge the archbishop's right of governance over the Polish ethnic parish, Burke excommunicated the five members of the board, as well as the priest the laypeople had hired to serve the parish.
That was a setup, a present left Burke by Rigali. Our gain is Philly's loss.
The gears of the Holy See turn slowly, but inexorably. This choice can't be comfortable news for the pro-abort CINOs like Pelosi, Kerry, Kennedy and Durbin. OTOH, they probably don't care. I'm sure the Holy Father is turning his attention to the American Catholic Church, and will be cleaning out the Stygian Stables that so many of our seminiarians have become.
seminiarians = seminaries
Welcome to the table! I converted nearly 50 years ago jsut before my marriage. haven't regretted a minute of it!
Excellent news! Burke is one of the few US bishops/archbishops that I really like and respect! May God bless him and grant him wisdom!
