Falls Church, Truro deny Washington Times Story

Washington Times reported this morning that Truro & Falls Church planned to leave the diocese. NOT SO according to the two churches.

In this morning's Washington Times, Julia Duin reported, "Two of Northern Virginia's largest and most historic Episcopal churches -- Truro and the Falls Church -- informed Virginia Bishop Peter J. Lee yesterday that they plan to leave the diocese and that as many as two dozen other parishes may follow suit."

A statement on the Falls Church web site says, "This certainly is not true and misrepresents where we are as a congregation. It is true that we think an extended period of study, prayer, and deliberation about how we are to respond to the serious rift in our denomination is wise and we are hoping to engage in such a time this fall."

A phone call to Truro also confirmed that no such announcement has been made. Something surely happened, but I don't know quite what. Julia did explain in the story about these and other churches entering a 40 day period of study beginning in the September. Such a deliberate approach to discerning God's will for their future is inconsistent with the headline and lead paragraph. It would appear that the Times is leaning a bit too far forward this time for the sake of exciting headlines. I'm waiting for call back from Truro with more informaiton.
