Saint Joachim is the most common spelling in English. St. Joachim is known from history (but not from Scripture) as the father of the Virgin Mary. His wife, St. Anne (Anna, Ann) has a wider following, probably because of her intercession for ladies seeking to marry and have children.

As I understand it, San Joaquin translates to Saint Joker, the patron saint of slapstick, gags, humor, and minstral shows...

Found this on a discussion board:

Phyllis ,
You're right. San Joaquin Valley is here in CA--the central part--and a Mexican explorer named it after Saint Joaquin (or Joachim , in English). Saint Joaquin is an important saint to Roman Catholics, especially in Mexico and some of the other Central American countries, b/c he is the father of the Virgin Mary--I know there are several villages in Mexico that have adopted him as their patron saint.

Ahhhh, truly the FReepers are a consistently brilliant source of information. Many thanks. I thot it was Joachim but didn't want to convince myself without being sure.

Not to dignify your comment, but there actually is a patron saint of stand-up comics, and he shares a relation to St. Joachim in a wierd way.

St. Joachim's wife is the patroness of single women. The patron of single men is St. Lawrence, a saint of reknowned lightness of spirit, who endured the world's first (and most brutal) comedy roast.

He was grilled alive! But he did not allow his mind-blowing agony to impair his good will or sense of humor; his last words were "flip me over; I think I'm done on this side." Hence, he is the patron of stand-up comics, who know what it is like to die in front of a tough crowd.

Some sources indicate that it translates as Yoakam. St. Yoakam is the patron saint of country singers. Other sources translate it as Yokum. St. Yokum is the patron saint of comic strip hillbillies.
