Devotion to God the Mother in Anglican churches is not new, but this is the first time writing about religion that I can recall a liturgy where Jesus is actually feminised into a mother as well. Episcopal ping for later reading

I am reminded of Pope Benedict's comment (while he was still Ratzinger). Paraphrasing here, but it was something to the effect that "Christianity is not something we just make up to suit ourselves."

We had a bit of this problem in our little dissenting catholic neck of the woods.
Some folks on the "liturgy committee" thought it would be nice to pray "Our Father who art in heaven, our Mother who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name....."
This led to confusion among people in the pew as to who "our Mother" was, as they were accustomed to referring to Mary as Mother.
These people didn't have much respect for Mary however. They just didn't like God being referred to as masculine.

After becoming Catholic, I was attending a Lutheran service with my husband, and noticed some of the language adjusted to reflect the "feminine" side of God, when it hit me. I don't need all this female God crap -- I have a spiritual mother in Mary. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee....
