Here's something that all Catholics can do in the days before the the release of the Da Vinci Code movie. Pray the Rosary, with the intention that all those who are thinking about seeing the movie avoid doing so, so their souls may not be put at risk. If you say the Rosary daily, add this intention to those that you already have. If you can, pray the Rosary every day, during the nine days left before the release of the movie. Continue to pray the Rosary during the run of the movie in the theaters.
No matter what you think what should be done in response to the movie, this is a powerful action we can all take.
This is a devotional thread. You might want to ask the questions on a discussion thread, where you will get more response. Religious Moderator asked us to treat devotional threads that are marked devotional like being at church.
A Lady caller tried to get him to see that hollywood promoting heresy as a credible thought provoking movie was an endangerment to those struggling with their faith, as in new Christians and those in search of a knowledge of Christ. The Lady was quite articulate but Bill handled her too casually, even dismissively.
There are some reparation prayers that would be good, too:
Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I bless You, I praise You, I glorify You, I magnify You, I adore You profoundly and I humbly raise my Spirit before you as I offer my prayer.
Lord, I offer you all the Love and the Praise and the Glory that You should have received from me, but because of my sinfulness, I have denied it to You.
Lord I offer you all the Love and the Praise and the Glory that you should have received from the human race since the time of Adam and Eve, but because of our sinfulness, we have denied it to You. I confess the sins of humanity and I am very sorry for them, Lord have Mercy on us.
Lord I offer you all the Love and the Praise and the Glory that you should have received from your Spiritual Creation which failed you through Lucifer and all the fallen spirits and angels and that has been denied to you.
I desire to do justice to You who are Justice and I offer you my life, united to the merits of your Holy Incarnate Word our Lord Jesus, His passion and His death, His precious body, blood, soul and divinity as reparation.
I also offer you the perfections, the virtues, the sorrows and the merits of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
I offer you the merits of all the Patriarchs, the Prophets, the Apostles, the Martyrs, the Saints and those who have done Your Will through out the ages.
Blessed Mother Mary, with all the Heavenly Angels and Saints, and with all creation let us give Adoration, Honour, Praise and Glory to our God, forever and ever Amen.
"Golden Arrow"
(This prayer is said to have been revealed by Jesus Himself to a Carmelite Nun of Tours in 1843 as a reparation for blasphemy. "This Golden Arrow will wound My Heart delightfully," He said, "and heal the wounds inflicted by blasphemy.")
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most mysterious and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in heaven on earth and under the earth, by all the creatures of God, and by the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ in the most Holy Sacrament of the altar. 1
Imprimatur - T. J. Toolen, Archbishop of Mobile-Birm.
Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, animated with a desire to repair the outrages unceasingly offered to Thee, we prostrate before Thy throne of mercy, and in the name of all mankind, pledge our love and fidelity to Thee.
The more Thy mysteries are blasphemed, the more firmly we shall believe them, O Sacred Heart of Jesus!
The more impiety endeavors to extinguish our hope of immortality, the more we shall trust in Thy Heart, sole Hope of mankind!
The more hearts resist Thy Divine attractions, the more we shall love Thee, O infinitely amiable Heart of Jesus!
The more unbelief attacks Thy Divinity, the more humbly and profoundly we shall adore It, O Divine Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy holy laws are transgressed and ignored, the more we shall delight to observe them, O most holy Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy Sacraments are despised and abandoned, the more frequently we shall receive them with love and reverence, O most generous Heart of Jesus!
The more the imitation of Thy virtues is neglected and forgotten, the more we shall endeavor to practice them, O Heart, model of every virtue!
The more the devil labors to destroy souls, the more we shall be inflamed with desire to save them, O Heart of Jesus, zealous Lover of souls!
The more sin and impurity destroy the image of God in man, the more we shall try by purity of life to be a living temple of the Holy Spirit, O Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy Holy Church is despised, the more we shall endeavor to be her faithful children, O Sweet Heart of Jesus!
The more Thy Vicar on earth is persecuted, the more will we honor him as the infallible head of Thy Holy Church, show our fidelity and pray for him, O kingly Heart of Jesus!
O Sacred Heart, through Thy powerful grace, may we become Thy apostles in the midst of a corrupted world, and be Thy crown in the kingdom of Heaven. Amen. 2
Nihil Obstat - John J. Clifford, S.J. Censor Liborum
Imprimatur - + Samuel A. Stritch, December 17, 1943 Archbishop of Chicago.
Praise to the Blessed Virgin Mary in Reparation for Blasphemy
Though the Virgin Mary is not God, she too is often insulted by unbelievers, and even by some who claim to love God! We Catholics cannot understand how someone could claim to love Jesus and not love the Mother He Himself loved so much. Yet since some people do just that, we, her children, might like to express our love for her to "make up" (so to speak) for the abuse and slander she endures. Since Jesus loves her so, He could only be pleased with the love we have for her. We love Mary for Jesus' sake, because He first loved her and gave her to us as our Mother.
Mary, my Immaculate Mother, I desire to offer you reparation for the offenses which your Immaculate Heart receives from the horrible blasphemies which are uttered against you. I offer you these praises to console you for so many ungrateful children who so not love you, and to console the Heart of your Divine Son Who is so deeply offended by the insults offered to you.
Receive, my Purest mother, this little act of homage. Make me love you more each day and look with pity on those blasphemers that they may not delay to cast themselves into your maternal arms. Amen.
V. Grant that I may praise you, O Holy Virgin.
R. Give me strength against your enemies.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary Most Holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.
Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.
Blessed be her Immaculate Heart.
Blessed be her Virginal Purity.
Blessed be her Divine Maternity.
Blessed be her Universal Mediation.
Blessed be her sorrows and her tears.
Blessed be the graces with which the Lord crowned her Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Glory be to Mary, Daughter of the Father,
Glory be to Mary, Mother of the Son,
Glory be to Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit.
My Mother, I love you for those who do not love you; I praise you for those who blaspheme you; I surrender myself to you for those who will not recognize you as their Mother.
(Repeat the portion in bold type five times)
And of course the prayers taught to the children at Fatima:
Pardon Prayer
My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I implore Your pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You. Amen.
Angel's Prayer
Most Holy Trinity - Father, Son, Holy Spirit - I adore You profoundly and offer You the most precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the earth, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And by the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and those of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of You the conversion of poor sinners. Amen.
Sacrifice Prayer
O my Jesus, it is for love of you and in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary and for the conversion of poor sinners.
Penance Prayer
O My Jesus, I offer this for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Where did you get that from? My sources say:
Luke 22:39-53
39 He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. 40When he reached the place, he said to them, Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.* 41Then he withdrew from them about a stones throw, knelt down, and prayed, 42Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done. [[ 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. 44In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.]]* 45When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, 46and he said to them, Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.* 47 While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; 48but Jesus said to him, Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man? 49When those who were around him saw what was coming, they asked, Lord, should we strike with the sword? 50Then one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51But Jesus said, No more of this! And he touched his ear and healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple police, and the elders who had come for him, Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit? 53When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!
It almost might be an entertaining movie on it's own, but for me, it's been ruined by my friends who insist it's truth (Catholics, educators, moms) and why won't I acknowledge that? Then there's Ron Howard's insistence on painting Opus Dei as some demonic fiendish group, and his refusal to issue a disclaimer.
As a straight up fictional movie intended for entertainment, it might just be entertaining. I don't know. But, LOL, if I somehow see it, and I won't add to the opening weekend box office numbers, I agree, there will be some fun in the laughing at the silly parts.
The Rosary repetitions are not meaningless rote, they are devotional, and the Rosary also is about reflecting and meditating on the various Mysteries, and the fruit of each Mystery. For example, traditionally on Monday one says the Joyful Mysteries; the first being the Annunciation-
The angel said to Mary, "You shall conceive and bear a son and give him the name of Jesus. And he will be called Son of the Most High." Luke 1:31-32
The second is the Visitation, then the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation (in the Temple), and Finding the Child Jesus in the Temple. The respective Fruits being Humility, Love of Neighbor, Poverty, Obedience, and Joy in finding Jesus.
What a wonderful way to pray :)
I fail to see any scriptual references to any of these. These appear to be manufactured 'mysteries'; not biblical, but an effigy derived from the bible. Isn't the purpose of the Rosary a means of 'keeping score' on how many times you have repeated a set prayer? Again, I see nothing regarding this in the Old or New Testament.
Consider: Mark 7:7 - Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men.
Thank you, these will be good, bookmarking.
No, it helps you keep track of where you are. Total, there are (in the original version) 150 Hail Mary's in the full Rosary, one for each Psalm. One of the origins of the Rosary is the uneducated substituting one prayer (the Our Father or a Hail Mary, for example) for each Psalm.
Revelation 4:8 (New International Version)
8Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come."
Vain repetitions?
No one else on the park and ride bus route knows what I'm doing for that 30 minutes. Most people sleep anyway.
With regard to Rev. 4:8, is that a prayer, or is that adoration? It is not a prayer, it is a statement of adoration and devotion. This is not a prayer.
I think we would both agree that prayer is a private thing. If you pray quietly, or 'in secret' you can do so on a crowded bus. Unless I am gravely mistaken, I take that verse to mean that we should not be braggarts, standing in public, announcing to the world about how pious we are.
Again, where did this originate from? I see nothing in the Old or the New Testaments regarding repeating a set prayer in order to obtain blessings or forgiveness. In fact, I have already indicated that Matthew expressly forbade repeating the same prayer over and over.
May I direct your attention to:
Matthew 15: 2-9
Col. 2:22
Mark 7:7-13: "But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctines the commandments of men."
Funny, but I started softly plain chanting it in the car this week.
I understand your questions. However, I must say, this thread is not the place to do it. It is marked as a devotional thread.
Sorry, I didn't realize that this was not a discussional thread, but that this was a Devotional thread. No offense was intended, and I do hope none was received.
No offense on my end. God bless you.
True enough. We shouldn't be standing on street corners shouting so others can see how pious we are.
OTOH, I think rallying the troops for a united prayer is a great thing. It's been done here before. During the run up to the last presidential election people signed up for an hour of prayer/devotion to do each day. The point was to make sure there was non-stop prayer from a focused group.
