The Catholic University of America has received an $8 million gift from the Knights of Columbus to renovate a vacant building near the center of campus that will house the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family
The Catholic University of America has received an $8 million gift from the Knights of Columbus to renovate a vacant building near the center of campus that will house the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family as well as space for university classrooms and other academic activity.
The gift from the New Haven, Conn.-based Catholic men’s fraternal organization will enable the university to reopen the three-story Keane Hall, which is located between the university’s library and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Built in 1958, the limestone structure — previously occupied by the physics department and, later, the administrative offices of the law school — has not been in use for a number of years.
Following the renovations, Keane Hall will be renamed McGivney Hall in honor of Rev. Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus.
“It is difficult to speak about the progress of The Catholic University of America throughout its long history without, at the same time and in the same breath, mentioning the Knights of Columbus,” said Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., president of Catholic University. “So much of what CUA is today is the result of the generosity and support of the Knights of Columbus.”
“I could not begin to express my gratitude adequately to Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight, and to all the Knights for this transforming gift. The newly renovated and newly named McGivney Hall will be an enduring testimony to these wonderful Catholic men and their families,” said Father O’Connell.
The John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family is a graduate school of theology affiliated with the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome as well as CUA. Established in Washington in 1988, it is currently located in Theological College, Catholic University’s seminary.
