Rumblings [in ECUSA]

There are indications that some Episcopalians are getting nervous about GenCon 2006:

The vestry at Christ Church in Rolla has passed a resolution asking the Diocese’s deputies to General Convention “to refrain from decisions that would serve only to deepen the divide within the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church.”

The text of the resolution is as follows:

"We the vestry and people of Christ Church, Rolla, represent a congregation of 280 members and hold a wide range of opinions on many issues facing the Church and wider society. Yet we agree that God desires unity and faithfulness within one, holy catholic, and apostolic Church. In addition to our love for the parish and the Episcopal Church, we care about our place within the Anglican Communion both for our relationships with fellow Anglicans around the world and as evidence that the Body of Christ transcends cultural and racial divides.

"We are greatly concerned by ongoing controversies and divisions within the Anglican Communion and are aware that the forthcoming General Convention will impact the future of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. We implore our deputation to the 2006 General Convention to pray daily for unity within the Episcopal Church and the Communion, and to refrain from decisions that would serve only to deepen the divide within the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Church."

I don't know that a whole lot should be read into this.  Christ Church is an outstate parish and St. Louis-area liberals tend to dominate the Diocese.  But Missouri was solid for Gene Robinson in 2003.  And if this resolution is any indication of Diocesan sentiment, a potential Anglican split could have much more serious consequences for ECUSA itself than I previously believed.

Our diocese attempted to draft a resolution to this effect at convention.

Not permittable, said the bishop, to instruct the GC delegation how to vote.
