Prayers for Father Joe.
With all the requests to help the victims of Katrina, please consider sending a donation to help Father with his legal needs.
Is there a copy of the suspension letter?
This bishop sure seems to like suspending priests.
It takes hard work to make a Priest shortage.
I seem to recall Loverde's name cropping up in relation to the priestly sex scandals also. If memory serves, he suspended a whistleblower who outed one or more miscreants. Fr. Haley, if memory serves.
sad.
I was married at Holy Family in 1998. Most of our priests are devout and try very hard to follow their vocation. Sounds like this one is being abused for doing his job. Reminds me of the incident with Fr Haley....
We'll send what we can to the fund listed.
What did the deacon do exactly?
as a matter of fact, I wonder at the deacon's name....we were married by Deacon Moore at Holy Family.
prayers for all involved.
Marshmallow,
You're correct in what you recall. Fr. Haley is the one Loverde suspended for pointing stuff out. I'm in the Diocese of Arlington, VA, and Loverde is the bishop. I've heard things for quite some time about him from friends who've been Catholic longer than me. Apparently, since most priests in the diocese are solid and orthodox, Loverde can't do all the damage he'd like. A while back, Loverde was apparently going to implement some things that weren't exactly kosher, and my pastor (who is the senior priest in my diocese) was ready to debate Loverde in a public forum about why he shouldn't implement those things. Apparently Loverde backed down. Fr. O'Brien is two years from retirement, whereas Loverde just turned 65, so I guess he figured he'd wait. Plus, Fr. O'Brien's knowledge of Aquinas and his debating ability are well known, and he is very popular; likely Loverde also knew Fr. O'Brien would have wiped the floor with Loverde in any debate.
Can he make a request to another Bishop and be accepted into another diocese?
Only with Loverde's permission. He's stuck.
First, what exactly did the deacon do?
Second, the above line is a good argument against married priests. It seems this Bishop is more worried about how the deacon's family will react (lawsuit maybe), than finding out the truth. I am curious if there was a mention of some type of legal action in the letters sent by the wife and daughter.
Loverde shenanigans in our diocese - Ping!
This is so disgusting but I can believe it.
Now of what might the daughter accuse that the deacon and his wife did not?
I hope it turns out the priest is completely innocent, but because of the risk of lawsuit, the Bishop would have had to act if an allegation of that sort was made.
This is the same Bishop who, a year or so ago, DEMANDED that Christendom College quit using their Communion Rail.
from the article:
"Fr. Clark was not informed of the true nature of the meeting beforehand, was given no opportunity to see the charges against him or have counsel, and was not allowed to defend himself. To add insult to injury, the suspension was dated the day before the meeting. The wording of the bishops suspension repeats the uninvestigated allegations from the slanderous letter of the deacons daughter"
"Stalinist" is the word that comes to mind.
