A Roman Catholic bishop on the Spanish island of Tenerife has ordained a man as a Catholic priest despite the fact that he is married with two children.
The 64-year-old former Anglican pastor, David Gliwitzki, was ordained in La Laguna on the Canary Island.
The Bishop of Tenerife said the move was a unique exception within the Spanish Church.
According to Church rules, priests are supposed to be celibate. But the ordination was approved by the Pope.
Father Gliwitzki is originally from Zimbabwe.
Before moving to Spain, he was part of an Anglican delegation to the Vatican in Rome, which aimed to forge stronger ties between the two Churches.
The Bishop of Tenerife says particular consideration was given to Father Gliwitzki's circumstances as an Anglican, which is a Church that permits priests to marry.
The bishop says this is not a step towards the abolition of Roman Catholic celibacy.
But it is a surprise - especially in Spain, where the Church is particularly conservative and very actively against any softening of existing doctrines.
Just weeks ago, the Roman Catholic Church was helping to organise large public demonstrations against a new law that allows same-sex couples to marry.
The ordination of the former Anglican vicar also comes as Pope Benedict XVI calls on followers to hold fast to the core values of their faith.
Father Gliwitzki says he is very happy as he looks forward to hosting a Catholic Mass.
The reporter doesn't quite have the lingo down, does he?
He also doesn't seem to grasp the lack of earth-shaking significance of the event. Sorry, Danny. Gay marriage is still beyond the pale.
WTF? Someone alert the Catholic ping.
Clergy converted from other faiths can receive a dispensation and, but it's not frequently done.
I think he was already in his 5th or 6th year of seminary by the time Bishop McManus took over...so I just shrugged my shoulders on that one....at least he likes girls...an improvement for a diocese that still sends their priests to the Pink Palace in Baltimore. (reference the book Goodbye Good Men.)
"for a diocese that still sends their priests to the Pink Palace in Baltimore. (reference the book Goodbye Good Men.)"
Well, I was wondering why that infamous place still has any seminarians there. All the recently ordained priests for the Archdiocese of Baltimore have either attended Mt. St. Mary's in Emmittsburg or the Pontifical Seminary in Rome.
This is just the start...Like in the court of law, the precedent has now been set:
Gay Priests, Married Priests, and soon Woman Ordination
Is contraception and then God forbid abortion to far behind in the Vatican II church?
Another sad day for the church with not a peep from the Vatican or the Rotweiler of faith, Pope B16 or so they call him. I guess he is to busy off his high of meeting with the Jewish and Moslem leaders in the name of ecumenism while his "sheep" are scattered all over doing as they please.
Levada? He is next to be indicted if what I am hearing about his coverup in Sanfrancisco is true, but I am sure there will be another cushy job in line for him as Cardinal Law
