Floriduh Voter had a serious car accident this afternoon on 66th St. by Hospice and is lucky to be alive. FV's car went airborne after being hit and there were no brakes. She flew north onto a median and the car wouldn't stop - something told her to put the car in park and to take the key out. FV ended up in southward oncoming traffic facing north. Good Samaritans directed traffic around her car. (FV lost downforce when the impact took out the back windshield). The guy who hit FV was a half block south with the cops and paramedics. FV travelled a half a block, sometimes in mid-air. It was a miracle. Her car didn't make it but FV's going to take it easy for awhile. She REFUSED to sign a Living Will at the er. That was the first document shoved in her face.
For those following Terri Schiavo stories, this is very near the Hospice where Terri died.
I have no details whatsoever at this time except what I included here, will just add them if I get them or others as it comes in. FV could sure use some prayers and support.

This week I've been concerned about a fatal home fire in a city with plenty of news media. Classic stuff for news coverage and easily accessible at the emergency room. I have combed both print and electronic media for the story. Not a word.

I just heard of another bad wreck in FL (Palm Beach). These people are crazed behind the wheel! (OK, not all of them, but a good portion!)

Ah, I see...so no matter who else is involved and how many emergency vehicles are dispatched and the amazing nature of the story, somehow finding out that one participant of the saga was a "Schiavo supporter" (don't you mean "Schindler" since the name Schiavo is evil?) is enough to quelch the story?

Just a quick foxnews alert. They may have given more info but my TV is not in the same room as my computer. I just got up when I heard the stupid foxnews alert music and Palm Beach (usually the alert is Michael Jackson didn't sleep well or a 12th repeat of something).

I am amazed at what is not covered by the media. My son helped pull a body out of the surf here locally about a month ago. My husband was also a witness. Never a word about a drowning, never a word about a body, nothing, so far as we could tell. Weird what they ignore.

Having been involved in the TS issue for a couple of years now, I can say that FV's one of the good ones who did not give up. Apparently it wasn't her time. Good thing for us.
About refusing to sign a Living Will. That is an opportunity to formally express your wishes. Remember that all of this anguish over Terri Schiavo was over the fact that she did not express her wishes, so the responsibility by law devolved upon her HINO.
By all means, let us not be discouraged from thinking about and formally spelling out what we would want done if incapacitated. You don't want your fate to fall in the hands of some judge, do you?

To ask a person to sign a "living will" when they have just had an accident, and might not be thinking clearly, is irresponsible. Even clear-headed folks don't always know what they are getting into when signing a so-called "living will." I would rather sign a "will to LIVE."
Here's an example:
The Will to Live
When Marjorie Nighbert entered a nursing home after having a stroke, she did not expect to be starved to death, but that is what happened when she became a victim of her own "wishes."
Like many people, she did not want her life to be prolonged when death was imminent. So Nighbert created a durable power of attorney (DPA), in which she gave her brother control over medical decisions in case she could not make them for herself. And according to the family lawyer, Nighbert said she did not want a feeding tube if she became terminally ill.
When Nighbert fell ill the nursing home followed the orders of the DPA and denied her food and water for two weeks. But then something unexpected happened: She asked to be fed. A court battle ensued, and the court ultimately upheld the nursing home's decision to deny Nighbert food and water. According to the judge, Nighbert was not competent to ask for food, and to give her food would constitute "extraordinary means."
Nighbert died on April 6, 1995.

The other states are in various stages of preparation and will be completed soon.

I work in an emergency room. We NEVER and I repeat NEVER ask ANYONE to sign a Living Will. If someone is going to be admitted into the hospital they are asked if they have one. This is standard operationg procedure throughout all the hospitals in the US. If there are ER's that ask people to sign Living Wills this is not ROUTINE, at least NOT YET.
