The chances of ECUSA electing a female Presiding Bishop next year just went way up:
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has elected a woman president -- the first female chief executive ever for the 770,000-member Protestant denomination.
The Rev. Sharon E. Watkins, senior pastor at Disciples Christian Church in Bartlesville, Okla., won overwhelmingly support Tuesday from the 3,000 delegates attending the denominations General Assembly.
"Today is not about me," said Watkins, 51, after she was elected to a six-year term. "Its about all of us joining together and letting God work with us and through us."
Tom Jewell, regional minister for Oklahoma, said Watkins election, "reflects a great readiness and receptivity to move into the future."
Based in Indianapolis, the Disciples of Christ has its origins in an early 19th-century frontier movement to unify Christians.
"There have certainly been women bishops -- but I dont believe theres ever been another woman whos headed a mainline Protestant denomination," said Adair Lummis of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, who studies women clergy.
Watkins, a graduate of Phillips Theological Seminary and Yale Divinity School, succeeds the Rev. William Chris Hobgood.
No way ECUSA lets those bumpkins steal its thunder or its media run. My money's on Nevada's Schori or Indianapolis's Waynick. Reaction!
Bishop Carol Hendrix is a real Trojan horse, as feminists sorts think she is one of them by virtue of her gender. She is seldom invited to speak to such groups a second time as her beliefs are solidly evangelical catholic.
Hard to see a female Presiding Bishop doing any worse than the current male Presiding Bishop.
This begs the question: How does one refer to a female priest? "Mother" just doesn't seem right.
She can't be worse than Frank.
We currently have a woman priest. We call her Mother Anne. It works fine. You just have to get used to it. She is, by the way, the best priest we've had in 20 years.
I wanted a good-looking man when they chose her, but she is a blessing.
I hope the gal's elected.
You'll get complete agreement here.
ECUSA one-upmanship....it's even-money that our female presiding bishop will be a lesbian.
FYI..as discussed..
Interesting. This will not end well. At all. I think we can expect a hardcore / pseudo Christian split sometime soon.
as I said, if you want on the list..just Freepmail sionnsar...and don't forget to mention that I recruited you...LOL
.Given the will, or the lack of resilience to resist assault, people can "get used to" anything. That doesn't make it right.
I will never understand or agree with people who find a moral objection to women priests.
I think they will always be in the minority, but I have known two well, and consider both of them to have a genuine calling.
I'm sorry you feel you can't accept this, but that's the way it goes.
Now Gene Robinson is a whole different story.
