(Boston - AP) The Vatican has defrocked six priests from the Boston archdiocese who were accused of sexually abusing children.
They include John Connell, Denis Conte, Peter Frost, John Hanlon, Richard Matte and Paul David White.
The men may no longer act as priests, except to offer absolution to the dying.
They are also no longer part of the archdiocese and are cut off from any financial support.
Connell was accused in a civil suit of molesting a twelve-year-old boy while spending a week with him in a Florida hotel during the mid 1970's.
In 1994, the archdiocese removed him as chaplain at St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers after a complaint alleged sexual misconduct.
They didn't use to. I went to 7th and 8th grades in a parish that was about half black at the time. We were just Catholic.
Welcome to FR! :)
The Church is full of a lot of "..didn't used to.."
I was there a little while, had conversations with the man and found him very standoffish. Lennon I always struck me as a guy who would "steal your wallet and help you look for it"
As for Coyne, what's worse is he is now teaching homiletics at St. John's....do we really want THAT guy teaching Seminarians how to be Priests?
I am long gone from there, they couldn't care less about the Church...in my department there were six practicing Catholics among 18 employees and two of them cohabitated.
In addition bloated salaries, I was frequently criticized for quoting the Catechism about what the Church teaches.
I even heard the Pope Joan myth promoted by a Cabinet Secretary (who by the way leaves at 2 every day to go with his 200k salary).
Well, sure, wouldn't anyone want to be taught how to talk out of both sides of their mouths? [/sarcasm needed?]
I'm afraid, though, you only confirm my worst assumptions about the Chancery (except that six orthodox seems kinda high!)
(I'm pinging american colleen because she doesn't trust Lennon any more than I do!)
I said practicing, but I have a strict idea of orthodoxy (see catechism of the Catholic Church). They consisted of me, two nice young women (now gone) and two older gentlemen (also now gone).
As for in Church on Sundays, there were the two guys who lived with their girlfriends and the perv who liked to give back rubs to young women (all three are big wigs)
It is actually extremely Machiavellian when you get down to it.
Any follow up info here?
Another is the fact that he allowed his foreign policy staff to wage an all-out war against the moderate-right government of Spain, allowing for a communist sex cult to take over the nation.
Re: Coyne.
When he was still spokesman for Law, my sister always joked that you could tell how close he was to going on or coming home from a vacation by whether or not he had a goatee that week.
Amazing that The Brown Bag left Bishop Richard (but everyone calls me Dick) Lennon with so much power.
And that giant SIGH you've heard over and over again comes from each of the New England dioceses that did NOT get saddled with him as their Ordinaries died, retired or fled for their lives.
Maybe worse than that. I heard on the radio this afternoon that, once the mayor offered Faneuil Hall for the school's graduation (pulling the PR coup that so eludes the archdiocese), the archdiocese actually called the school principal and ordered her not to attend. Howie Carr was saying they seem to want to keep this at the top of the news! My own question is whether they're actually trying to get people to leave the church -- they're not leaving fast enough already maybe?
