No release yet from VIS, but Msgr. Kevin W. Vann of Springfield, IL, has been appointed co-adjutor bishop of Fort Worth, TX, by Pope Benedict XVI.
There's a new sheriff in town.
2. What is a co-adjutor bishop?
1. He's been appointed to our good deacon Sinkspur's diocese.
2. A coadjutor bishop has an immediate right of succession upon the retirement of the diocesan bishop. When the current diocesan of Fort Worth turns 75, Bishop Vann will succeed him right away.
Sounds like BXVI is wasting no time!
Do you know anything about Bp. Vann? (Of course, I suspect he'd be an improvement no matter what.)
I only know all this from a google search.
Certainly looks positive! Thanks for finding that.
This has been in the works. Everyone will be surprised that a Hispanic wasn't appointed, as Fort Worth's Catholic population is 60% Hispanic.
1. Thank you for the information.
2. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
From one of his sermons prior to the presidential election:
"[A]bortion, euthanasia, stem cell research using embryonic cells are always intrinsically wrong. They are a direct assault on the God given gift of life. Certainly, to remain faithful to what we have believed, as a community of Faith that lives the law of the love of Christ we must clearly articulate compassion and care... so that these alternatives are not necessary. But this compassionate care and alternatives to abortion and euthanasia does not take away from the intrinsic wrong and evil of these actions, and the question of our participation and our cooperation in them by our various choices in public and private life."
Any man not afraid to speak the truth is alright in my book. But I don't know anything about the current bishop. What's wrong with him that there is so much rejoicing over this new appointment?
It won't be that long. Delaney wants to retire, as he has terminal cancer and is not doing well.
Hispanic Ministry:
Monsignor Kevin W. Vann, Episcopal Contact (217) 528-7521
Let's hope, then, this new bishop is fluent in Spanish.
Nothing is theologically or spiritually wrong with Bishop Delaney. But he is ill, and wants to retire.
Vann will need to learn Spanish, if he doesn't speak the language already.
Thanks for the info, colleen!
