ROME -- Future American parish priests studying in Rome are cheering the choice of a pontiff forged in the image of the only pope they've ever known.
Yet, when the seven American cardinals who run dioceses were asked Wednesday how Pope Benedict XVI will help them recruit new candidates for the priesthood and keep them from closing parishes, there weren't many concrete answers.

Ping.
It was endearing in that it humanized these young men so much. HOO-YAH!!! HABEMOS PAPA!!! HOO-YAH!
Vocations are fostered by men behaving like men who love God...John Paul showed it. Benedict is showing it. Dioceses where the Bishops act like men who love God and take it seriously have more vocations than those that don't. The young and devout priests coming up are showing it. Seeds are being planted even as we speak.
These guys are out there. What they need is encouragement. The Cardinals and other bishops need to get off their apostoloc butts and recruit. Go into the schools, hold youth retreats, stop holding back. Shwo a little confidence, The Lord has given you the examples of two extraordinary popes. Open your eyes!
And stop putting certain nuns in charge of seminary admissions.
That is a scary thought...
BTTT!
The seminarians in my Archdiocese have increased from 90 ten years ago to 180 today.
Two men will be ordained this year. 39 men will be ordained next year! Springtime is here! Just heard those numbers TODAY from the prefect in charge of Mount Angel Seminary.
Today's seminarians reflect growing trend

May Pope Benedict XVI defrock Cardinal Mahony forthwith.
Other than being a liberal cleric, is there any real legitimate reason to "defrock" Mahony (eg. his lousy aesthetics in designing L.A.'s Cathedral of the Angels is not a good excuse!).
Ping Holy Father is coming up with full coverage on CNN.
His formal Inaguration.
KV has been out and about today and to hear this news will be televised...he is sooooo excited.
I on the other end took the Labs out for play time .....shhhhh um which meant I did my pool exercises and one of them did laps with me.
Don't tell the pool service or they will quit. They have a no dog rule in pools. Hey he is no more oily then if I had ten people using the pool. And he is a quick in and out swimmer..
OK we are waiting for coverage....
ping to self for later pingout.
The problem some of the more conservative seminarians are facing and the newly ordained priests in this diocese is the hostility they find with the pastors they have been assigned to. Those who are deacons have been told not to wear the proper vestments or to kneel during Mass. Newly ordained priests are being told they are spending too much time in the confessional or that wanting to offer a daily Mass is seen as being rigid or hard line. I am sick of words like these being used to decribe devout young men.
If the Vatican accepts Maida's resignation (he just turned 75) the first thing the new archbishop of Detroit should do is dissolve the Presbyteral Council. This is where so many of the traps are laid for these seminarians. We have in this diocese a very unhappy group of priests who are either lazy (the best that can be said), or disaffected progressives who hate the new Pope and everything he represents.
Recruitment also comes from the home, community, local church, friends and extended family.
But the example must be set by the priests. If they show their lack of faith in the institution by their attitude, the laity will be discouraged. If the Marine Corps recruiter doesn't feel proud to be a Marine, then no one signs up.
