This is interesting!!!
Monsignor Franco Risi prepares for Mass under the portrait of Pope Benedict XVI, former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, hanging in the St. Clemente Basilica in Velletri, some 25 miles south-east of Rome, Wednesday, April 20, 2005. St. Clemente is a 5th century church and one of the titular dioceses of Pope Benedict XVI. According to Monsignor Risi, Ratzinger is the 14th cardinal to have become pope after being assigned to this diocese. (AP Photo/Pier Paolo Cito)

My cousin passed away last September. You have my condolences. I remember when you mentioned that he returned to Louisiana.
I really can't imagine BXVI keeping Marini on as papal MC. They have such different liturgical perspectives.

In this photo made available by the L'Osservatore Romano Vatican newspaper, Pope Benedict XVI, flanked by Cardinal Angelo Sodano of Italy, left, and Eduardo Martinez Somalo of Spain, right, walks through the Papal apartments at the Vatican, Wednesday, April 20, 2005. the current Successor assumes as his primary commitment that of working tirelessly towards the reconstitution of the full and visible unity of all Christ's followers. This is his ambition, this is his compelling duty. He is aware that to do so, expressions of good feelings are not enough. Concrete gestures are required to penetrate souls and move consciences,Pocketed in among the reassurances and verbal gestures to JPII are these subtle timebombs. He makes references to VII and if he was behaving in a modernist fashion I would be afraid. But he's doing the opposite. This is a pope who has hit the ground running. Change will come rapidly IMO and he's trending trad with a capital T.

I noticed that the Pope spoke in Latin.
Now for my silly question....
Does he speak English?
The linguistics of John Paul II still have me astounded.

As I quoted on another thread:
Pope Benedict XVI: I too ... want to affirm with decisive willingness to follow in the commitment of carrying out the Second Vatican Council, in the wake of my predecessors and in faithful continuity with the 2,000-year-old tradition of the church," he said.
Liturgical and moral "progressives," watch out!

When I tried to install REAL stuff it took over my whole computer. Everything had to come through that. I won't download it.

I read somewhere that it is a tradition that the Pope's message at his first Mass as Pope is delivered in Latin.

But I have high hopes for him, and yesterday ordered a Latin missal as a gift. Have you seen the "new" 1962 Missal from Angelus Press? I got my copy last week, and it is the most amazing thing I've ever seen in print. Beautifully produced, unbelievably thorough, ALL of the Propers in English AND Latin, literally hundreds of prayers, all of the Traditonal Sacraments, wonderful explanatory notes. Anyone who assists at Latin Mass, or has ever thought of doing so, should order a copy immediately. EVERY Catholic should have a copy. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
And no, I am not shilling for the SSPX.;-)

The report I read said B-16 (and I use that cognomen with the utmost respect) is fluent in at least 10 languages.

You can also buy a 1962 Roman Missal at www.baroniuspress.com if anybody is squeamish about contributing to the SSPX.

I read on another thread that Pope Benedict loves music, particularly Mozart. The new pope is a pianist! And yes, Salvation, he speaks English.
The best media coverage over the past few weeks, of these absolutely marvelous events, has been on EWTN. While NBC interviewed Roger Cardinal Mahony for their nightly news, EWTN had Avery Cardinal Dulles on, to speak about the new pontiff. Fr. Richard John Neuhas (may he one day be elevated to Bishop!), who co-hosted EWTN's program with Raymond Arroyo, relayed some comments from lay friends who know Rattzinger. One likened him to a "gentle genius", acclaiming him as the best person for our times.
