I didn't have the TV or radio on yesterday morning, so I didn't find out until after 2, Eastern time.

I know the Cardinal came onto the Papal Balcony and proclaimed "Habemus Papam", then said the name Benedict XVI. Did he say WHO it was, before the new Pope actually appeared, or did folks only find out when he appeared at the window?

He said who it was before, and immediately after, I think, Ratzinger stepped out.

As with most of these events, there is a tradtion (small 't') in what is done, including what is read.

I the announcement is made in Latin, the text of which is something like what's on ewn.com's home page:
We have a pope. The most eminent and most reverend Lord Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church N., who assumes for himself the name N.

It was revealed before the new pope appeared on the loggia.

As soon as the announcing cardinal said the word "Josephum," I yelled out "It's Cardinal Ratzinger!"

Many in the crowd seemed to know at that moment too, as a roar went up and the cardinal had to pause a bit.

Mike Fieschko posted the Latin phrase the way the cardinal said it:

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus Papam: Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Josephum Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Ratzinger qui sibi nomen imposuit Benedictum XVI.
