I know the Cardinal came onto the Papal Balcony and proclaimed "Habemus Papam", then said the name Benedict XVI. Did he say WHO it was, before the new Pope actually appeared, or did folks only find out when he appeared at the window?
As with most of these events, there is a tradtion (small 't') in what is done, including what is read.
I the announcement is made in Latin, the text of which is something like what's on ewn.com's home page:
We have a pope. The most eminent and most reverend Lord Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church N., who assumes for himself the name N.

Found the Latin:
Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus Papam: Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Josephum Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Ratzinger qui sibi nomen imposuit Benedictum XVI.
