His views on the relationship of standing of the old and new covenants strike me as unsound, to put it mildly. He believes that Judaism is salvific eo ipso, and that Jews ought to remain Jews, not concerning themselves with the claims of Christianity.

Heck, in my lifetime nobody's been elected Pope.I've lived through 2 of them, but do not remember them because I was 3 years old.

Let's see, John Paul The Great ascended to the Chair of Peter in 1978. That made me a whopping three years old. :)

I had it easy for two reasons,
First, my hubby isn't Catholic so he kept the babies at home.
Second, the church I was at before had CCD at during mass so children were not expected to attend. It sounded good at the time but now I know better.
Because of the CCD thing, my girls feel it is a great honor to be at Mass. We have St, Joseph's Picture books to help the little one make it through, but I would not hesitate to walk out.

Ratzinger calls for clarity of faith ahead of papal conclave
German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger delivers the homily during a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, Monday April 18, 2005, as the cardinals who will elect a new pope made their last public appearance before sequestering themselves inside the Sistine Chapel later in the day. Ratzinger, the powerful dean of the College of Cardinals, used his homily at the Mass dedicated to electing the next pope to warn cardinals and the faithful about tendencies that he considered dangers to the faith: sects, ideologies like Marxism, liberalism, atheism, agnosticism and relativism.
Cardinals walk in procession during a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, Monday April 18, 2005, in their last public appearence before sequestering themselves inside the Sistine Chapel later in the day. Thousand of pilgrims and tourist packed St. Peter's Basilica and the square to take a last glimpse of the cardinals who will elect the next head of the Roman Catholic Church during the conclave. I was born under the Papacy of PiusXII.
I was about 10 years old when my godmother explained
the Papal elections to me and I recall being intrigued
waiting for the white smoke.

He [Cardinal Schönborn] said this at a public talk given at tulane University last fall. There's no on-line report of this that I know of, but I was present and have no doubt as to what I heard.
