Purpose Driven Life
Posted on 03/14/2005 10:28:37 AM PST by blue-duncan
For all of you Rick Warren fans out there, did you happen to catch the interview with the Brian Nichols, ex-hostage Ashley Smith? She was reading "Purpose Driven Life" as part of her devotions and read part of chapter 33 to him and then asked him what he thought his purpose in life was. This was part of the discussion that convinced Nichols to give himself up. We should all have her boldness in the face of trials.

It seems this thread got sidetracked from the beginning. What happened yesterday was a miracle. This guy was intent on killing eveyone who got in his path and yet when this guy came upon the path of this young woman, she was there to minister to him so that he surrendered to the police and did not harm her or anyone else.
I don't suppose anyone would complain if she used the bible and some book by John Piper or R.C. Sproul or John MacArthur to accomplish the same thing, but since she used Rick Warren's book and the insights in that "popular best selling" book, she is now the subject of ridicule.
I suspect that if she had attempted to read this guy chapter 33 of some dry Theological discourse that things would not have turned out so well.

Warren Smiths articles have exposed many of Rick Warrens teachings.
I would not spend my money to support anything Harper Collins sells.

Just because one has a personal prejudice against Rick Warren is not reason to discredit or mock this story. It's a pretty incredible story regardless of what she used to talk with him. Nichols was obviously a disturbed indiviudal on many levels and with the events of the past few days was already agitated.
Heck, it would be an incredible story if she'd read to him from Valley of the Dolls. And it would probably get less grief on FR.

So you make charges based on ingorance. It was entirely predictable.
If you have a comment on content, and you know what the content is, please comment. If not, you clearly have nothing important to say on the subject.

Maybe Jesus saved her life using Rick Warrens book.
Well said.
Whenever I hear folks pontificating and being certain their way is THE way I remember Christ told us "In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would not have told you".
It's been my observation that God uses many ways and means to lead us home- it's beyond my pay grade to decide how and what they are...

I have yet to see one comment which takes issue with any specific "problem" in Rick Warren's book.

Agreed. Under the same type of criticism, CS Lewis would probably be attacked.

The Big question to ask is why is Rick Warren Padding the pockets of Harper Collins. No, the real question isn't about publishing companies. It's about the content of Warren's book. A book which you know nothing about.
No ,My master is Jesus Christ.
Then read the book and see if he is served well there instead of jumping to goofy conclusions based an nothing. Alternately, don't read it and keep your ignorant opinions to yourself.
You act like the choice is between Rick Warren, a minister, and Jesus, God and savior. It is a false choice.

Rick's free tools "It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ...he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone." Ephesians 1:11
Bible Reading Plan: 30 day | 90 Day | 1 Year (PDF)
If what he writes gets someone who doesn't know why they are alive to get past his book and pick up the Bible, God bless him. And if he is using some otherwise morally bankrupt publishing house and one soul is saved, God bless him.
I've never read the book and have no interest in it.
To: siunevada
I've never read the book and have no interest in it. I picked it up because I've had many people come up after Mass and ask my opinion of it. These are Catholics, mind you, who are finding it helpful.
It's an excellent introduction to a relationship with Christ. It's loaded with biblical references, and is very pointed in its focus.
Warren writes for the masses, and the masses seem to be giving him a reading. I don't see a thing wrong with that.

The facts are the facts
Rick Warren is using the subsidiary of Harper Collins to publish his books.
Harper Collins is the Publisher of the Satanic Bible.
I have a problem with that, and I think many other people would also.
I also noticed that the book must have done alot for you, because you have no problem judging me.
If you noticed, I did not Judge you.

I am unable to find information regarding Harper Collins being the publisher, please reference that info. I have searched their website and they claim they don't publish the book. Thank you

I have yet to see one comment which takes issue with any specific "problem" in Rick Warren's book. The problem is that it is a New York Times Bestseller. So there must be "something" wrong with it.

I have not judged you, please reference the post number and specific comment. Thank you.
