Spanish Catholic Bishops Endorse Condoms

MADRID, Spain — In a substantial shift from traditional policy, the Catholic Church in Spain has said it supports the use of condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS.

"Condoms have a place in the global prevention of AIDS," Juan Antonio Martinez Campos, spokesman for the Spanish Bishops Conference (search), told reporters after a meeting Tuesday with Health Minister Elena Salgado to discuss ways of fighting the disease.

The Catholic Church has repeatedly rebuffed campaigns for it to endorse the use of condoms in the fight against AIDS. The Vatican states that condoms, because it is a form of artificial birth control, cannot be used to help prevent the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

I cant wait for the Vatican and Ratzinger to slap this one down.

The failure rate of condoms to prevent pregnancy is about 20%.

And the effectiveness of the barrier over extended practice is questionable anyway. Doctors have been double gloving for operations for a long time now and many still find blood cells have penetrated too their hands.

One glove is about 5 times thicker than an unstretched condom and the cross-sectional area of the HIV virus is less than 1/200 of that of a red blood cell.

The use of condoms to prevent AIDS is folly, pure and simple.

But he's in union with Rome and that's all that matters.

And we all know AIDS is a completely preventable without having to advocate the use of anything intrinsically evil.

"But he's in union with Rome and that's all that matters."

But that might be in transition as well.

When Ratzinger becomes Pope...sayonara to the condoms in Spain. Although the Catholic Church is still trying to fight the Sociaslist Government's edicts of social liberalization, some members of the clergy are very liberal in Spain. It's only a matter of time before Cardinal Ratzinger puts them in their place.

Nothing surprises me. The church is severely fractured beneath the surface. I believe these revelations are actually helpful. Like finding roaches in the kitchen when the light flips on.

Well I hearken to recall the urgent nature of the Pope's discussion on the Apocalypse last week... I'm sure he knows, and I'm beginning to think the Vatican has lost control...

They didn't lose control - they gave it away.

Last Update: PRESS RELEASE FROM SPANISH BISHOPS ... I haven´t translated it, but it basically says what I´ve suggested, that the press misconstrued his statements. The statement ends: In Conclusion, contrary to what has been stated in diverse instances, it is not certain that there has been a change in the Church´s doctrine with respect to condoms." (En conclusión, a diferencia de lo afirmado desde diversas instancias, no es cierto que haya cambiado la doctrina de la Iglesia sobre el preservativo).
