Bishop Wilton D. Gregory, who was president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops during the height of the clergy molestation crisis, has been appointed by Pope John Paul II to serve as Archbishop of Atlanta, the archdiocese announced Thursday.

Gregory, who had been serving as bishop in Belleville, Ill., will become Atlanta's sixth archbishop.

"I welcome the opportunity to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I am deeply grateful to the Holy Father for his confidence and support," Gregory said.

He succeeds Archbishop John F. Donoghue, who is resigning for reason of age. He is 76.

After a great deal of time and reading, I've come to the conclusion that JPII is a lefty.

The Pope makes the appointment, although there's usually a file given to him that has X candidates in it.

Maybe (shudder) Gregory was the LEAST objectionable.

Do you really think JPII is a lefty? Seems an out of character statement for you.

If JPII is a lefty, then no doubt we're in store for a few more. Just trying to prepare myself, is all.

I think sometimes we forget the excesses of right leaning Church heirarchs (which IMO led to Vatican II), and politicians, and how sometimes in such a crucible what is forged is mostly reactionary, and that doesn't seem to ever work out.

This is almost as bad as pro-abortion Karl Lehmann's appointment to the sacred college of cardinals, or Law's elevation as cardinal arch-priest of S. Maria Maggiore.

If you want my opinion.......this is a reward to Gregory from his confrers here in thge USCCB for obfuscating hte sex offender issue plus the gay priest issue. Why was Donaghue replaed with Gregory........policy. Its part of the deconstruction agenda. Its so obvious. And so sad.

Maybe he has become more orthodox with time.

But I think some of your facts are not quite straight, according to the GA Bulletin (which is searchable off the Archdiocesan website). The FSSP apostolate began in 1993, the same year Donoghue was appointed. They began offering Mass in at least 4 places, not just once a month at Sacred Heart. By 1996 they were borrowing a local Maronite Church for Mass every Sunday, and in 1999 they got their own building. The contemporary articles seem very positive:

The St. Francis de Sales Latin Mass community originated in 1995 when a group led by Joe Fradet asked Archbishop John F. Donoghue to consider the regular celebration of the traditional Latin Mass in the archdiocese.
"We met with the archbishop who gave the Mass and the community his blessing," said Fradet. "We are so fortunate to have an archbishop who has been a devoted guardain of the Latin Mass."
- GA Bulletin, Feb. 12 1998.

His public positions over the last few years (including support for Terri Schiavo and the firm directive in Worth to Receive the Lamb) are quite orthodox.

Abp. Gregory has some big shoes to fill.

Yup, I do. That's not the same as saying that he's a heretic, or is leading the Church to perdition (impossible, you know...)

But his Canon Law has been criticized by very responsible people; he simply has NEVER required a Bishop to "toe the line" with only a few exceptions (on both sides of the divide...) and he promotes turkeys.

So he's a lefty. Good guy, maybe a saint...but a lefty.

Gregory is indeed one of Bernadin's boys. Was consecreated an auxialiry bishop by him for Chicago. That alone would call into question the validity of his Episcopal consecration......and the co-consecrators were no angels either.

After his role in the sodomite cover-up, Gregory should have been sent straight to jail (or the Catholic equivalent), not promoted to a palace in Atlanta.
Just when Donoghue was starting to clean out the trash, the pope diverts a sewer into the city. What happened to prudence?

I left Atlanta in 1994 and there was not a regular FSSP mass. As I recall, they had a Tridentine Mass a couple of times a year at Sacred Heart Church in downtown.

The indult I was refering to was not the FSSP, it was a diocesan priest who didn't know how to properly say the Tridentine Mass.

"Maybe as a special favor for the new Abp Gregory, Bp Trautman will accept an invitation to recommend replacements for your existing (orthodox) Diocesan Liturgical leadership."

Update on Trautman...

I just perused the linked article which you posted, about Troutman. In it he states who the members of the USCB Liturgy Commission are to be.

EEEEK!!!!! The members are as bad if not worse then Troutman! You have the likes of Wcela and Pilzaricyk (sp?).

We are in deep horse manure here.....and its gonna get worse.

He will have to be EXTREMELY orthodox to be as good as retiring Archbishop Donoghue.

He's not. There goes Atlanta. An awful choice. :-(

"The members are as bad if not worse then Troutman!"

Don't forget the consultants, who include Mahony and Curry.
God help us!

"After a great deal of time and reading, I've come to the conclusion that JPII is a lefty."

O'Malley is a pseudo-conservative lefty too. While he's reconfiguring tradition-minded parishes, places like St Anthony's continue operating under his jurisdiction "in full communion with Rome"....

Of course, there's also Kerry's favorite haunt - the Paulist Center.

Here's a pertinent commentary from the fellow (not necessarily priest) who runs traditio.com...
Meritocracy is a government by those who have earned it. JPII uses the very opposite form of church government, a kakistocracy, government by the worst. It seems that JPII goes out of his way to appoint immoral, incompetent, and irregilious men to the highest positions. Ratzinger is a good example. As Prefect of the Doctrine of the Faith, the man is writing that Our Lord Jesus Christ is not the Messias for the Jews, that the true faith is not exclusive to the Catholic Church, etc. He appointed Abp. Weakland of Milwaukee, who embezzled half a million dollars from Newchurch to pay of his catamite. He appointed Bp. O'Brien, of Phoenix, who ran over a man in his car and showed no remorse until he was being sentenced.

Now we can add Wilton Gregory to the list. This man just ended his term as President of the U.S. Conference of [Newchurch] Catholic Bishops. His administration has been a scandal. The crime wave that includes all the bishops of the United States has increased, two eminent chairmen of the bishops' own Investigating Committee were fired because they told the truth.

What does Dilbert say? If a man fails at one job, promote him to a higher job. So now JPII, who can't seem to utter one word of censure against his own appointees when they deflower youth, steal from the Church, and act like (as one FBI agent put it) the Mafia, has kicked Gregory upstairs. He goes from the berg of Belleville, Illinois, now to become Newchurch archbishop of Atlanta.

The pope is supposed to be the Church's teacher, right? Well, he's teaching us plenty. He's teaching us to be as corrupt as possible so that we can attain the highest "plums" of the Church. What is that other than about as demented as you can get. If the truth were known, it may be that the man's mind went long ago, and the papacy of JPII has been null and void since about the mid 1990s.
