About 40 Catholic schools in the Chicago area are at risk of being closed or reconfigured at the end of the school year, the Chicago Tribune said Sunday.

The closings could become the largest school shakeup in the history of the archdiocese, affecting nearly 17 percent of the nation's largest parochial system.....

The suburban Philadelphia Catholic schools are bursting at the seams. New schools are opening. These are areas with reputable public schools, and yet the parents are choosing to send their kids to Catholic schools. I think some of the folks here on FR need to get their heads out of the sand and take a look at these new lay run parochial schools. By and large, I think they would be surprised and pleased with what they find.

why is it that public school teachers put their children in parochial schools?

Good point. I know some who've done this.

I agree. There's a waiting list for Catholic schools around here, and that list includes Protestants and even a couple of Jewish families.

Our parish will not wait list non-Christians. Only out of parish Catholics and local Protestant children. We will not take unbaptized children at all. So, we don't have any Jewish, Muslim, or Hindi children. I'm pretty sure that's a parish policy, not diocesan.

We don't have many Protestant kids in our parish school. I know of one Protestant boy who graduated here a few years back was told by the public school he needed either Ritalin or special ed. His mother was able to put him in the Catholic schools where it turns out he needed neither.

Don't paint with such a damned broad brush! That just is NOT so for many of them.

How many diocesan "Catholic" educators can you name who DO NOT teach little children about sex?

If I may chime in here....

I was oblivious to the extent of the crisis in the Church up until a few years ago. Sending my child to Catholic school was a loud wake up call. I was forced to pull her out because what was being taught and promulgated there was endangering her budding faith. (oh the stories I could tell you)

If they don't teach the faith, let them close. In the state that they are in now they do far more damage than good, IMHO.

Indeed, there are some very good and very Catholic educators out there........but very, very few of them. Gone are the days when you can not hink twice about sending your child to a Catholic school, confident that they will be taught the faith.

In all too many cases, they will be taught anything BUT the faith. The main reasons why folks put their kids in Catholic schools is either out of a misguided sense that it is 1952, and the children will be taught the faith which they as parents knew............or simply becuase of the individual attention/small school population/lack of crime & drugs.

The same holds true for Catholic high schools. My old HS in NY has a "diversity awareness day" which recently included the display of the famous "AIDS Quilt". Then again, this school's faculty founded DIGNITY in the 70s.

Cute.

Yikes. Is that a diocesan high school or a private one? I know here in Philadelphia the diocesan high schools are pretty good in terms of orthodoxy, although some of them leave something to be desired in terms of academics. But I wouldn't worry about a child's academics as much as his soul. That diversity crapola is the kind of thing that goes on in the private Jesuit high school here.

BINGO!!!!! You win the door prize! Indeed, my alma mater was a private Jesuit HS. The whole gay friendly diversity thing seems to be one of their longest running themes (along with blatent socialism).

They founded DIGNITY there, and had some of the first gay masses anywhere in the church attached to the school.....which I inadvertently stumbled upon as a student one afternoon! Boy, was I shocked!

I gave you MY source! What are you doing instead of reading my posts? LOL

One of my OLDEST,dearest friends, who does NOT lie,has taught in a CHICAGO parochial school, was then that school's principal and now is the principal for another CHICAGO parochial school, for the past 30 years! She also know most other principals as well.

All you have,is some internet website. And as we all know, anything and every imaginable thing can be and IS posted on line;factual and not,as "fact".

I have many close relatives with lot's of children who live in Chicago and love their children far too much to put them in the hands of the Chicago diocesan schools. Take for instance the known sodomite Bishop Daniel Ryan, who after he left his position in disgrace continued to be welcome in the diocese Confirming teenagers. This is a man who hired male prostitutes and is invited by St. Michaels parish in Wheaton, Illinois to Confirm the children.

Shortly thereafter St. Michaels burned to the ground. Ha Ha!

Yep,there ARE quite a number of these problems in Chicago parochial schools;which is one of the reasons many are being closed...the monies to pay off parents and victims is so much, that there's precious little left for the schools.

OTOH,not ALL of the schools are bad.

And you don't know about as many of the scandals,as I do;most of them are kept secret. I know about the ones that don't ever make the papers, because my friend tells me about them.

Sooooooooo....your family's kids go to public school? Home schooled? Haves enough money to send them to Latin or Parker or Country Day or Alliance Francaise? :-)

Where and what is Noonan Academy?

It's Novus Ordo but unlike many Catholic schools, smut is not a part of the curriculum.
