What?

That is not germane to what we are discussing here. Also, I think my Jewish friends might disagree with you.

"In the United States, the Catholic population was 46 million; it is now 62 million."

Since thirty to forty plus million (depending on the illegal count) Catholics immigrated into the U.S. since 1966, the number of Catholics among the non-immigrant population is actually down. What do you suppose happened to them? In my community they quit going to church in disgust or joined Christian or pseudo-Christian sects. When I look at the lists of '60s and after graduates from the local Catholic school, I recognize many names of folks still in the community yet see very few of them in church.

I sent it along to my sister, who is a church musician (who has to work in an Episcopal church because the Catholic churches here don't want a classically trained musician...).

I had never heard of such a thing until I recently read "Why Catholics Can't Sing: The Culture of Catholicism and the Triumph of Bad Taste" by Thomas Day (my new hero). I bought the book second hand and it was all outlined and had copious notes written in a hand suspiciously similar to nun handwriting. Anyhow, it was obvious the anonymous margin note maker does not like the author. Some of the notes were really funny because you could feel the rage oozing from the page.

Why should I go to mass to see a sorry version of pop culture when I can stay home and watch VH1 with a bag of Doritos

You shouldn't if you have such a shallow understanding of the Eucharist.

If it's about "how you feel," then perhaps a Pentecostal Church might be more to your liking.

I love reading books that are marked up - yours was probably marked up by some Sister Snowflake somewhere who was tinkling out Kumbaya in a piano bar arrangement while Fr. Fruitloop danced around the altar...

Kind of off the topic but I was listening to EWTN this evening. Canon Lawyer Marc Balestrieri was on.

He is the one who filed heresy charges against Kerry. He announced that he is also now filing charges against other abortion supporters. A few of the names mentioned were, Ted Kennedy, Tom Harkin, Cumo, and Susan Collins. In total he said that he is submitting 40 politicians.

For those interested check out his web site

Dern, I'd pay dollars for a look at that.

From a flyer picked up at Friday night mass...

14th Annual Gregorian Solemmn High Mass in Latin
"Votive Mass for the Holy Spirit"

Celebrant: Peter Cardinal Shirayanagi
Concelebrant: Ambrose De Paori Nuncio to Japan

On: Saturday October 23rd 2004 3:00 p.m.
At: The Tokyo Cathedral of Saint Mary

Sponsored by Catholic Action Fellowship Association
http://www.tim.hi-ho.ne.jp/catholic-at-d/

Funny thing...

The flyer is in English and Japanese. In Japanse it says the Mass is at 2, and in English it says it's at 3.

Wonder why that is.

I agree completely with thor76's, rogator's and sdsurfer's replies - and I would like to add that if you believe the church has grown since the changes, I must say that you will have a hard time convincing all the folks who in the last 35+ years have had their Churches and Catholic schools closed down and sold to the highest bidder as a result of the new mass......which, btw, the closings are still happening in alarming numbers to this very day.

The Pope proclaims the year of the Eucharist,so, hopefully, the Holy Eucharist will regain its rightfull place in the center of the altar.....once the altar regains its rightfull place when they get rid of the table.

The Letter requests that the Eucharist be given an appropriate place for private devotion.

In most cases in churches built in the last 20 years, that is in a private chapel which is also used for daily mass.

That is the appropriate place for private devotion.

Listen to Mr. "The most reverent Mass I ever saw was celebrated by a homosexual" telling us what's "appropriate."

The Vatican is telling you what is appropriate, papasan.

You're on the edge, again.

Attention, everyone:

If you quote sinkspur's words back to him in a way that he finds inconvenient, he will use his undue influence with moderators to have you slapped down.

Be warned.

Why should I go to mass to see a sorry version of pop culture when I can stay home and watch VH1 with a bag of Doritos.

* Try starting with an attitude of Thanksgiving (Do you know the definition of Eucharist?). Think of how many Miracles began with Thanksgiving - on the night He was betrayed He took bread..and GIVING THANKS...Prior to Lazarus being resurrected Jesus gave Thanks to His Father in heaven...and Hed took th eloaves and looking up He gave thanks...etc etc.

ANY Mass is of incomparable value because it is Jesus acting through the Priesthood He established offering Himself to the Father on our behalf as a sacrifice of propitiation. That alone should make you Thankful you can make it to any Catholic Liturgy.

Or, you can just continue to complain and keep your superior self apart from the evil doers at the local Parish.

Try Thanksgiving. It is better for your soul and that attitude might induce you to begin meeting with the Pastor and others and joining the various groups within the church where your influence can be the leaven that contributes to a Liturgical restoration in your Parish.

"Youth want to learn and explore. Those who would really want to go to mass, might be curious as to 'what this is all about.'"

I finally was able to attend a Tridentine Mass, my first since it was unceremoniously kicked out of the Church, many years ago. I had to catch an airplane to get there, to St. Mary's in Washington, DC. It was a solemn high Mass. The majority of the female worshipers wore head coverings. I was surprised at the large number of college age kids and the young families who were there, vastly outnumbering the older folks. The Church was full, the reverence was like nothing I have seen for years, you could have heard a pin drop. Even the young children were well behaved. What a wonderful experience!

Bad advice, sd. Ignore it.

Instead, come on down to the traditional Mass tomorrow.
