BRIELLE, N.J. -- An 8-year-old girl who suffers from a rare digestive disorder and cannot consume wheat has had her first Holy Communion declared invalid because the wafer contained none, violating Catholic doctrine. Now, Haley Waldman's mother is pushing the Diocese of Trenton and the Vatican to make an exception, saying the girl's condition _ celiac sprue disease _ should not exclude her from participating in the sacrament, in which Roman Catholics eat consecrated wheat-based wafers to commemorate the last supper of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion.

Good idea.
Cool, isn't it, how a bunch of rabid, unthinking Catholic-haters can bring us together.
How about a group hug!
Buts its so much more interesting and fun to declare " I am a victim", or even more fun to declare "my kid is a victim"
She apparently found another church where the Priest was accommodating. Why did it become an issue? There's more to this story.
Save for later reading.
Then Consider this....
Already the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League has used this decision's expansion of the logic of Roe to attack congressional efforts to reaffirm that a child completely born alive is a legal person. Such a policy, said this group, is "in direct conflict with Roe," which "clearly states that women have the right to choose prior to fetal viability." The euphemism of "the right to choose," routinely used to avoid mentioning abortion, is now being used to justify killing outside the womb
that is a statement from USCCB in 2000, but now?
No Press release, no condemnation, nothing.....The simple fact of the matter is there is an Inherent Moral Duty for a Body Imbued with Power to Speak out, especially in Grave instances.
Maybe When they get done invalidating an 8 year olds communion, they can worry about the Moral Soul of the nation....
yes, bread and wine are the required norm
as a rare exception, non-fermented grape juice and specially processed wheat-based bread may be used
Christ Hinself chose wheat bread and grape wine for the Last Supper.
The three Gospel narratives of the Last Supper are absolutely consistent. Matthew: 26:26 "This is My Body." 26:27 "This is My Blood " Mark: 14:22 "This is My Body." 14:24 "This is My Blood " Luke: 22:19 "This is My Body." 22:20 "This is the New Covenant in My Blood." Jesus' next words instituted the Catholic priesthood: Lk 22:19 "Do this in remembrance of Me."
Jesus assured the Apostles that the Holy Eucharist is a reflection of the heavenly banquet. Mt 26:29 "I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
After His resurrection, Jesus walked with two disciples to Emmaus. When they arrived, He celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for them; Lk 24:30 "While He was at table with them, He took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them."
Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you shall have no life within you. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood shall live forever, and I will raise him upon the last day. - John 6.
She would be most welcome at ours, and we would not insist that she put her life at risk or consume alcoholic beverages.
And God forbid she should even think of drinking alcohol, when our Lord Himself made hundreds of gallons of wine from water (John 2) and was accused of being "a glutton and a winebibber" (Matthew 11.19). We wouldn't want her imitating Him, would we?
No they're not. Every single bishop in this country signed a statement that tells those politicians who support abortion that they should not receive the Eucharist. They put the onus on THEM. It's THEIR souls, after all.
Some bishops will refuse the Eucharist, others won't but the message is still the same.
WOW....Just like Catholic John Kerry.....
I heard someone say the early Christians drove Yugos.....
In Effect, he is sayong"Elect me President and I will ensure your 'right' to commit infanticide.
Now, those men in the Church, had no Problem speaking out about other subjects like the War in Iraq, But an OSTENSIBLE CATHOLIC openly campaigning to PROTECT ABORTION??????
Sorry,I am not hearing it.
(And it would apply equally to a Republican (rudy)...)
Yes, driving Yugos is so much more "patristic," don't you think?
I think Jesus drove a Yugo too.
Or so I'm told.
Back when I was a protestant, we literally used cubes of Wonder Bread and Welches grape juice. It didn't matter what it was made from since "communion" was just a ritual reenactment. As Catholics, we take the "This is my body..." literally. Like the early Christians, we believe that the bread and wine is truly changed into Christ's body and blood. In this way, each and every Mass is a miracle. That is why we are so precise in how it is conducted. Those who believe otherwise can do it however they please, with whatever they want.
I think it had a moon roof to accomodate praying in the "orans" position, right?
I think a peritus told me that once.
I think you're absolutely right. I can't imagine god really caring about anything beyond the child's intent.
This is why I'm having a hard time taking the Catholic Church seriously. Leaving Saddam in power is OK, but creating a special wafer so a young girl doesn't get sick from her Communion isn't?
Well the twelve apostles were all of one Accord. How they all fit, I have no idea.
