Purpose Driven or Purpose Drivel?
The discerning side of my mind

Posted on 07/26/2004 1:57:27 PM PDT by Lasher

Would like to know if there are any other Christians out there that have not swallowed Rick Warren's version of the Gospel. I left my "seeker-friendly" Church after much prayer and ponder, and it took several months to make the split. I still must speak with my former pastor about this, so until I do, I will not name my former Church. I have noticed that most who follow the "Purpose Driven" material are emotionally attached to it, much like true Christians are emotionally tied to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Did Jesus give us any kind of mission at all?

‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Mt. 28:16-20).

The 'Accuser of the Bretheren' does the same thing. I'm sure he appreciates the help.

He sure does and he is thanking Rick Warren.

That is definitely a mission.

Does it apply to you personally?

Does it supply some kind of direction to you in deciding priorities in your life?

It appears that my poor language still results in your misconstruing what I've tried to say.

1) I called the Scriptures Rick used Good ones because they were the OPPOSITE of the Fluffery a naysayer accused Rick of. Similarly, His very Biblical comments about those Scriptures were the OPPOSITE of fluffery and were at the core of The Gospel and the purposes and priorities of none other than JESUS THE CHRIST. Both the Scriptures Rick selected and his comments about them proved the lie of the fluffery comment. That was it.

2) Perhaps I need to define my term. When did a group rise up in The Bible accusing another group of ostensible believers in a naysaying way--when was such a group on God's side? I don't think your examples fit at all.

No, satan's finger prints are all over the manner, message, style, tone, attitudes, jealousies, arrogance of the naysayers attackig the faithful servant (Rick Warren) of the Most High God, The King of Kings and Lord of Lords--Jesus The Christ.

I dont know that Id go that far in my opinions (personally)- I dont doubt the faith of those that would carp about him (Warren) - but it does make me wonder who is served by the divisiveness

funny thing is - those that complain about him, spend an awful lot of time bemoaning his ministry while ignoring the one Christ has charged THEM with.

Its the same for those complainers we hear from time to time that say - my Pastor this - my Pastor that - I left that church blah blah blah

to which I say - lovely - look who's hands youve played into - Youve (not you quix) gone from at least enabling some form of ministry to disengaging altogether and participating in none

The same crowd that complain - also sees Sunday worship with eyes as to how it specifically effects them and not their brothers and sister

Its very self centered IMO

I believe you are sincere in your approach to PDL.
How much more are we supposed to lower Christian Standards in order to draw people to the Church.
There are people out there who read PDL and never attend Church at all.How do you change them into meat and potatoes?
For this reason the starting point must be the Bible and not the PDL.

(Acts4:32)

Life of the Christians
The community of believers were of one heart and one mind.None of them ever claimed anything as his own;rather, everything was held in common.

What silly nonsense!

The STARTING POINT WITH PDL

IS

SCRIPTURE.

Seems obvious to me.

Sorry you missed it.

Yeah. You're right. I can still be overly hyperbolic and shrill.

I just think that the stakes are so serious for many individuals--eternal residencies . . .

I certainly have no delusions that some folks will change their fossilized biases.

But I do believe that lurkers deserve some stark comparisons between the silly thinking and perspectives and the truth.

"funny thing is - those that complain about him, spend an awful lot of time bemoaning his ministry while ignoring the one Christ has charged THEM with."

WOW! How do you know this? Of all the people in this conversation, of those resisting some particulars in Rick Warren's publications, are you saying they are not obeying God in the works He has given them? how can you say these things?

"The same crowd that complain - also sees Sunday worship with eyes as to how it specifically effects them and not their brothers and sister"

How can you Make these generalized accusations? I think you shouldn't say things like this. It is clearly naughty. I for one, have been falsely accused by you in this. Is this right or fair of you? What do you intend to do to rectify this error of yours? waiting.

Thoroughly agree.

Mat 18 seems to be avoided like the plague in handling relationship problems instead of applied . . . well . . . religiously.

This is what is wrong with site,s like free republic. We all assume everybody has have common knowledge on a certain topic. I,m sorry for any misconceptions. If you have any questions of why I hold the position on the Purpose Driven Movement,Please contact me through private message or open forum.

As I said, if you read my response carefully you'll see I was not commenting on the "Purpose Driven Movement"(TM). I was commenting on your erroneous statement:

Christians are supposed to be Holy Spirit lead. NOT PURPOSE DRIVEN!

As I pointed out, that statement by itself sets up a false dichatomy.

Whether or not Rick Warren has adequately captured the "pupose" that is to "drive" all our lives is another question entirely.

The idea that "purpose driven" is somehow antithetical to "Spirit led" was the focus of my comment.

>>Yes, I would agree. But realizing GOD'S SON DIED FOR OUR SINS should give one pause to the gravity of the situation. I would suggest reading John 8. While many "believed" in the Christ, they were quick to turn their backs on Him.<<

Like Peter.

Sorry, Terriergal, I do not see the dichotomy in the two sentences you quoted. They work together for me.

Many agnostics and atheists try to pick apart the Bible the same way.

In the example you gave, you interpret the first part you quote to mean that you should not attempt to have a seeker sensitive service until you have unselfish, mature believers. I interpret it to mean that it will not successfully become a seeker sensitive service unless those attempting to enable it are unselfish mature believers.

The second sentence you quote simply amplifies the first. That is, if you are doing it SUCCESSFULLY, you are mature...
