Thanks for the article.
Feast day of Mary Magdalene bump
According to Anne Catherine Emmerich Mary Magdalene is the sister of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.
She was the wealthiest of the family, and before her conversion traveled in society circles, and was very promiscuous. But she was also a monetary supporter of Jesus and his band.
Yes, there were two Mary's in the family. It was a popular name then. It was a revelation from a mystical Rabbi that the Messiah would be born to a virgin named Mary so the rush was on. (apparently you never hear about that one in Jewish circles anymore) Jesus' mother also had a sister named Mary.

Apparently, the music industry hasn't changed much.
Sorry for the levity.

Great article, thanks!
Thank you .. most interesting! I spend so much time reading technical papers that it was very refreshing to revisit classical English ;-D
. . . it could be worse, you could be reading legal briefs . . . :-p
I used to like her better before the gnostic/women-priests movement got hold of her. Of course, this isn't the poor saint's fault!
FutureChurch is having a "Mary Magdalene Day celebration" here in the university parish. FutureChurch is so bad (pro-gay, pro-women priests, anti-tired-old-dogma) that they've even been banned in Cleveland, btw.
In any case, my local paper reported breathlessly that this is a day when women in the Catholic Church have traditionally been allowed to take over the functions reserved to men. I think they got this "information" from the FutureChurch woman who is leading this event. The event is essentially a mock Mass, "presided over" by a flaky nun and with a "homily" delivered by another flake.
We sent a copy of the article, with my sister's measured but unsparing comments, to the bishop of our diocese, who is very orthodox and I am sure is not aware of what is happening here. But what was especially appalling is that the kids at the university are being exposed to this garbage in what is theoretically the home parish for university students here (St. Augustine's, Gainesville, FL).
Of course! You like improvement, don't you? Read their slogan ....
According to their Press Release (Barf Alert!):
"Over three hundred groups in the U.S. and worldwide are expected to hold special celebrations of the Feast of St. Mary of Magdala on or around July 22 in parishes, convents, Catholic schools, retreat houses, private homes and small faith communities. The celebrations make available contemporary biblical scholarship about Jesus inclusive practice and provide a venue for Catholic women to serve in visible liturgical roles.
I think it is especially important for Catholics to celebrate this great woman of faith at a time when it is so clear that church needs the nurturing witness of women, said Call To Action spokesperson, Linda Pieczynski. If women and mothers had been integrated into our Churchs decision making structures we would not be facing the cover up of clergy sex abuse that we face today.
Here's a picture from one of last year's celebrations.

Thanks (I guess) for the pix, NYer!
They're always so globby looking. Self-righteous bluestockings. They know what's good for us.
Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. -- Mark 16:9-11
Obviously Thomas was not the only disbeliever. But for His appearing to the ten, out of the presence of Thomas, one can honestly wonder about the tremendous fear they were experiencing at being accused of associating with the Son of God.
No doubt this absence of faith was the underlining reason the eleven rejected Saint Mary Magdalene's testimony in the presence of His Mother. Testimony given to them at His direction.
Peter's rejection of The Christ was a human weakness shared by all of those chosen by Jesus.
