Mathew Henry P.1017 "This power did not exist at all in the apostles as a power to give judgement, but only as a power to declare the character of those whom God would accept or reject in the day of judgement".
There is no evidence that Peter did not live and die in Rome and no evidence that he was not a Catholic.
Gee, that's kind of fun. Just make a firm assertion and it sounds like the truth. Maybe I should have been a lawyer.
Excellent post. This is a very clear exposition concerning a dogma that couldn't be more assailed today, both inside and outside of the Church.
Extra-biblical authority???? Get thee behind .... well, you know the rest.
And the catechism? Tread carefully when you hold your judgement stick, friend...
Wow, the Holy Ghost was breathed upon the Apostles in order to give them the power to "declare the character" of others? What does that mean?
Wrong on both counts. Please provide any historical evidence that supports your assertion. St. Iranaeus has already been quoted in the above article to bolster the Catholic viewpoint.
Sure there is. Read Eusebius. Read Clement's letter to the Corinthians. Read Ignatius's letter to the Romans. Read the non-canonical Acts of Peter.
Your assertions are just silly.
Christ directed the Apostles to declare the only method by which sin could be forgiven.
In so far as the prophets and patriarchs are saved, as is St. John the Baptist -- all non-Catholics -- you are going to have to offer an understanding of "Church" somewhat more broad than simply the visible institutional Catholic Church.
Who?
Oh, and maybe you can ask Mr. Henry where the term and dogma of sola scriptura is in Scripture.
Yeah, I keep tripping over the darn thing and whacking myself in the head.
ha,ha..
I didn't realize you Roman folks were into rewriting Scripture.
THE SCRIPTURES, THE WORD OF GOD
declares that
IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART AND CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH . . . , YOU SHALL BE SAVED.
AND
IT ALSO SAYS,
THOSE WHO CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.
It does NOT say
IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART AND CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH AND ARE A CARD CARRYING MEMBER OF THE ROMAN CHURCH . . . YOU SHALL BE SAVED.
Nice try. But God has never been big on bureaucracy.
Pharisees have. But not God Almighty.
You might consider doing it His way according to HIS priorities instead of the bureaucracy's.
Remember, friends, when Christ spoke the words to Peter, there was a metaphorical message, as with many of his teachings. Don't quench the spirit by believing that you cannot be saved unless you believe the Catholic Church is the only way...Jesus says"Iam the way, the truth and the life.none enters the gatesexcept through me"
Try actually reading the article and commenting on the arguments made therein, instead of regurgitating what your protestant handlers have taught you. That's the whole reason the article was posted, you know.
By what authority do you render the words of Our Lord "metaphorical"?
Parables,friend,parables... yes,Our Lord spoke in These terms, as even those as witty and knowledgeable as yourself are unable to grasp even the simplest of scripture. My authority is the Devine Word Of God...
