Thank you for this post as it was exactly the sentiment I echoed upon seeing the movie; based on my readings & teachings of the gospels over many years my understanding and belief was that, indeed, as noted here, that Mel Gibson's portrayal was very accurate and, if anything, a little light on the treatment of Jesus; another example being how they cast lots for his posessions, something which is portrayed but only slightly in the film. As for the portrayals of the thorny crown piercing his head & face + the beatings endured after Pilate had first turned him over to be punished, my understanding was always that those periods were indeed horrific and that the portrayal in "The Passion ..." were accurate if not tame at the least.

Additionally, Jesus' appearance in the movie exactly matches the image on the Shroud of Turin. (I have looked at the Shroud a hundred times but have never before noticed the whip marks. I guess I assumed that the marks would only be on His back.)

For interpretation I feel that marring Cavizel's face any further would have distracted the dramatic impact and the actor's phenomenal emotional and spiritual treatment of Jesus' suffering.

Thank you, Tame, for posting this. I have been saying this for some time in response to the prissy preachers who whine that the movie depicted too much gore and violence.

They have been deluded by a "gospel" that has been sanitized and stripped of the reality of the cross.

Even worse than the physical aspect of the cross was the private transaction between the Christ and the Father as the spiritual judgement that is rightfully ours was poured out on Jesus instead. We dodn't get to see that one.

My question is at the end of the movie, the temple was torn down - by God. Does it say that in the Bible?

To be blunt, it appears from the accounts cited that Jesus' face was beaten to a swollen pulp. This may account for the fact that, after Jesus resurrection, the disciples on the road to Emmaus did not recognize him even as they spoke to him! (Luke, chapter 24)

I don't believe the beaten face & body would have remained...only the pierced scars. I would think the scars would have made Jesus MORE recognizable as there probably weren't too many people walking around with battered bodies. Think of a boxer. His beating around the face doesn't last.

Thought the Holy Spirit prevented those on the road to Emmaus from knowing who Jesus was & later assisted in the recognition.

Has anyone here ever been punched out repeatedly in the face? Your face swells op and looks very distorted - it takes on a grotesque, flattened apperance. This was somewhat captured in the film Raging Bull.
