I can tell you in three phrases the content of a decade of catechesis: God is good, Jesus loves you, and love your neighbor.

Our "catechesis" during the 1980s consisted of a few other tidbits: the Bible is mainly fiction, fighting "agrarian reformers" is evil, sex is fun.

This is what I did. I'm teaching the adult Catechism class, and it is fun! It's very sad to see how badly Catholics in America have been cheated out of their Faith for so long. I'm hoping that in my small way I can help open the eyes of a few people who will be able to go out and do what I'm doing: teach the Catechism. Don't stand on ceremony. Just take the book, take turns reading, and read until someone asks a question or makes an observation. We can all learn from each other. Please pray for me as I do this, that what we learn from our Catechism will help us to grow in our Faith and help us to pass it on to our children.

Thank you for posting this. It is so sad and so true. Though regretably, I am one of those Catholics raised in the Church where tradition has been effectively crushed. The only reason I am where I am is because I tend to be a little reactionary, and when my Sunday School and Jesuit HS teachers pushed me left, I ran right and haven't stopped. Thank you again.

I am a College Student, and when I got here, I went hard right, almost into Evangelical land, until I took a few steps back and moved more into Orthodox Catholicism. I too got involved, but after four years they booted me out. (too "rigid", "divisive", "intimidating" etc. etc.)

Now, I go to different friends homes and even to some parishes where I have priest friends to give apologetics presentations.

The "establishment" (ie: chancery/rectory rats) do not want the Truth to be told.

Please pray for me, for soon I will be on an upcoming diocesan Teens Encounter Christ weekend and I WILL be giving the kids the Truth. I will be giving each teen a, gasp!, Catechism, and will be pointing out certain "moral truths" for them to ponder.

The story which this thread is based can be the same of so many Catholics I know.

There are a lot of good sources out there both in books and on the internet. Try Tan Books, Ignatius Press, the website Catholic Answers, and I'll dig the others up when I get home from work.

There is also Catholic radio. If you go to the EWTN site, there is a list of all the Catholic radio stations nation-wide. It's buried a bit on the radio page, in the drop down box on the search line, but it's there.

Traditional Catholicism offers so much more than the pap we were raised with. There's a lot of people who abandoned it who really disagree, but it's true. Don't let anyone stop you, but your journey will probably be your own.

I have heard that same old propaganda since viet nam. Hunger needs to be fought by ending corrupt governments. BTW, what good is food if noone is around to eat it because terrorists have killed so many?
