GRPL THREAD: "Songs of Grace"
The thread is established to compile an anthology of psalms, hymns and choruses which proclaim a sovereign God whose grace is un-leveraged.
- You do not need to post the entire song.
- You may also include your comments on your selection.
- Arminians and other "I Lifted Me" - types are welcome to start their own anthropocentric thread.

O that the world might know
the all atoning Lamb!
Spirit of faith, descend and show
the virtue of his name;
the grace which all may find,
the saving power, impart,
and testify to humankind,
and speak in every heart.
Nice Post.

Really ought to rename your group the Band of Self-Flagellationists. And since I practically
invented the Meterology joke, I expect royalty payments on your posts, or my franchise lawyer will see you in court.
BTW, love your new FRalias. Does JimRob know about it yet?

BTW, love your new FRalias. Are you talking about Milquetoast? That one cost me two weeks in solitary confinement.
Or are you talking about LPFOKETT GAHCOEEP-w/o*?

Read it more closely, xzins.
The "quickening ray", chains falling off and heart being freed all happened before he "rose and followed Thee".
If this was singing about the glories of Prevenient Grace, it would be the following order:
- Quickening Ray
- Rose and Followed Thee
- Chains falling off
- Heart being freed
Of course, that wouldn't be very Biblical, now, would it?

This thread is providential. I have had it with the icky praise and worship songs (there are some praise and worship I like, for the record....and that really can movement) played during the SUnday evening chapel here. I am trying to find a list of great songs with a lot of depth, so this is cool.
Here is one song I located that is very strongly Calvinist...:)
This appears to be a Chinese hymn....
Father, Long Before Creation
1. Father, long before creation
Thou hadst chosen us in love,
And that love so deep, so moving,
Draws us close to Christ above.
Still it keeps us, still it keeps us
Firmly fixed in Christ alone.
2. Though the world may change its fashion,
Yet our God is e'er the same;
His compassion and His covenant
Through all ages will remain.
God's own children,
God's own children
Must forever praise His name.
3. God's compassion is my story,
Is my boasting all the day;
Mercy free and never failing
Moves my will, directs my way.
God so loved us,
God so loved us
That His only Son He gave.
4. Loving Father now before Thee
We will ever praise Thy love,
And our songs will sound unceasing
'Til we reach our home above,
Giving glory,
giving glory
To our God and to the
TAG: Giving glory,
giving glory
To our God and to the Lamb.
Another:
Always Thou Lovedst Me
1. I sought the Lord, and afterward
I knew
He moved my soul to seek Him,
seeking me.
It was not I that found
O Savior true;
No, I was found of Thee.
Chorus: I find, I walk, I love,
but oh, the whole
Of love is but my answer,
Lord, to Thee!
For Thou wert long beforehand
with my soul
Always Thou lovest me.
2. Thou didst reach forth Thy hand
and mine enfold;
I walked and sank not on
the storm vexed sea
'Twas not so much that I on
Thee took hold,
As Thou, dear Lord, on me.

Awake My Soul (By Derek Webb's wife, also a singer)
1. The image of God invisible
The firstborn of all life
Before and within,
He holds it all in
One name, one faith, one Christ
Chorus: No one is good enough
To save himself
Awake my soul tonight
To boast nothing else
2. I trust no other source or name
Nowhere else can I hide
This grace gives me fear,
and this grace draws me near
And all that it asks it provides
(Repeat chorus)
Bridge: No seam in this garment
All my rags to hide
No less than your love
For Jesus is mine
3. When I stand on the edges of Jordan
With the saints and the angels beside
When my body is healed
and the glory revealed
Then still I can boast only Christ
(Repeat chorus twice)

Jean, you're ignorant of Charles Wesley's theology.
It was the same as John's, his brother.
Your logic on the song is as ill-placed as your understanding of the man.
But, I will abide by drstevej's request and leave this thread....UNLESS someone pings me to it. If you have anything relative to this freep me on it. X

THE DAY THOU GAVEST
by John Ellerton, 1870
The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended;
the darkness falls at Thy behest;
to Thee our morning hymns
ascended;
Thy praise shall hallow now our rest.
We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping
while earth rolls onward into light,
through all the world her watch is keeping,
and rests not now by day or night.
As o'er each continent and island
the dawn leads on another day,
the voice of prayer is never silent,
nor die the strains of praise away.
So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never,
like earth's proud empires, pass away.
Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever,
till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.

There are some more Caedmon's Call, Jars, and even one Newsboys song I can think of that are especially Calviny, to invent a new term.
Well, I got a final and need to get my butt in gear.

"Jean, you're ignorant of Charles Wesley's theology. It was the same as John's, his brother."
That is actually in dispute.
It is also totally irrelevant to my point.
"Your logic on the song is as ill-placed as your understanding of the man. "
According to Arminian theology, is one's heart freed (regenerated) before or after one "rises to follow Thee"? Or after?
Furthermore, according to Arminian theology is "Prevenient Grace" rightly called a "quickening" ray?
To "quicken"...
Ephesians 2
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins
...means to bring to life from a state of death.
By defintion, this is not the same thing as "Prevenient Grace".
All this is said to happen before we "rise up and follow Thee". That is backwards from Arminian theology.
"But, I will abide by drstevej's request and leave this thread...."
drsteve is not requesting that you leave the thread. He's asking for singers of anthropocentric songs to post their own thread. I think drsteve would welcome you with open arms if you followed his request to post only songs that "proclaim a sovereign God whose grace is un-leveraged."
If you would like, just re-post the obviously Calvinist hymn "And Can It Be", and you'll be fine.
I also have some other suggestions if you want to be original:
- Shout, for the Blessed Jesus Reigns
- 'Tis Not That I Did Choose Thee
- I Sought the Lord, and Afterward I Knew (He moved my soul to seek Him, seeking me; It was not I that found, O Savior true; No, I was found, was found of Thee)
Jean
To: Jean Chauvin
Nope. I think I'm correct.

"Nope. I think I'm correct." Of course you do!
But, unless Post-Modern Relatavism is absolutely true (pun intended), what you "think" does not determine the truth.

How many times have we been over this foolishness of the swarm trying to make Charles Wesley a Calvinist?
x: "Jean, you're ignorant of Charles Wesley's theology. It was the same as John's, his brother."
Jean: That is actually in dispute.
Jean, like so many things you misunderstand the meaning of "And Can It Be." Still, we freely invite all to sing it knowing that someday you will indeed understand.
But that is totally irrelevant to my point.
Charles wrote "And Can it Be" in 1738. Some nine years later he wrote the following:
Come, sinners, to the Gospel feast;
Let every soul be Jesus guest.
Ye need not one be left behind,
For God hath bid all humankind.
Sent by my Lord, on you I call;
The invitation is to all.
Come, all the world! Come, sinner, thou!
All things in Christ are ready now.
Come, all ye souls by sin oppressed,
Ye restless wanderers after rest;
Ye poor, and maimed, and sick, and blind,
In Christ a hearty welcome find.
Come, and partake the Gospel feast;
Be saved from sin; in Jesus rest;
O taste the goodness of your God,
And eat His flesh, and drink His blood!
You vagrant souls, on you I call;
(O that my voice could reach you all!)
You all may now be justified,
You all may live, for Christ hath died.
My message as from God receive;
Ye all may come to Christ and live.
O let His love your hearts constrain,
Nor permit Him to die in vain.
His love is mighty to compel;
His conquering love consent to feel,
Yield to His loves resistless power,
And fight against your God no more.
See Him set forth before your eyes,
That precious, bleeding Sacrifice!
His offered benefits embrace,
And freely now be saved by grace.
This is the time, no more delay!
This is the Lords accepted day.
Come thou, this moment, at His call,
And live for Him Who died for all.
John and Charles were singing from the same hymnal. But feel free to borrow it.
