Joe Klein: Arnold's Accusers Serious, Clinton's Were 'Lunatics'

Time magazine columnist Joe Klein said Sunday that groping allegations against Gov.-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger should be taken seriously, while the women who accused ex-President Clinton of groping and far worse were "lunatics."

Klein made the bizarre claim on NBC's "Chris Matthews Show" during a heated exchange with columnist Peggy Noonan.

Responding to Noonan's observation that Schwarzenegger's political bid wasn't derailed by the last-minute allegations because Democrats had already dismissed far worse claims by Clinton accusers like Juanita Broaddrick, Klein said, "[Clinton] was charged with those things by lunatics."

When Noonan reminded Klein that Broaddrick had accused Clinton of a violent rape, he replied, "I do think that she was an extremist."

Klein's comment drew a rebuke from host Chris Matthews, who noted, "A lot of journalists from major networks like NBC interviewed Juanita Broaddrick and found her to be a truth-teller. So you can't call her that."

Despite the rhetorical slap on the wrist, Klein complained moments later that Schwarzenegger had "lowered the bar" on acceptable behavior and that his election showed "the California public doesn't care about sexual battery - which is what this is."

The full exchange went like this:

NOONAN: I'll tell you one reason I don't think - even though you can play that tape of [Arnold] saying, 'I'll talk about [the allegations] later' over and over - I think the media and the Democratic Party spent the 1990s saying, 'None of this matters. You can do anything to women. You can beat them up and put private eyes on them if they come up and say that ...'

KLEIN: Wait a second. Wait a second. Wait. Wait ...

NOONAN: Excuse me. The media and the Democratic Party ...

KLEIN: You can beat them up?

NOONAN: Well, as a matter of fact, Bill Clinton was literally charged with that. He was charged with worse things than Arnold. Of course he was ...

KLEIN: He was charged with - he was charged with those things by lunatics. He was never legally charged ...

NOONAN: Whoa. He was charged by Juanita Broaddrick. I don't think it's fair to call her a lunatic.

KLEIN: I mean the fact is - the fact is, yes, I - I - I do think she was an extremist.

NOONAN: Alright. Well, then, let's debate over whether the women who brought these charges against Arnold are all, quote, lunatics.

MATTHEWS: You know, and a lot of journalists from major networks like NBC interviewed Juanita Broaddrick and found her to be a truth-teller. So you can't call her that. [End of Excerpt]

It's a simple double standard. Liberals can call women names if those women accuse a Democrat of sexual misconduct. If women make those charges against a Republican, there should be charges brought and investigations made.

Joe Klein was on the bus with Clinton and didn't have the cojones to use his real name on the book cover. He swallowed.

I have a question. Did those women who accused Clinton of rape file criminal charges against him, and where there hospital records or medical reports supporting rape allegations? Also, did they accuse Clinton of these crimes right away or did the charges only surface years later?

I'm the last person to defend Clinton, whom I despise, but I don't like these phony rape or groping or sexual harrasment charges, whether they're against Clarence Thomas, Arnold Schwarzenneger, or even Bill Clinton. If a crime is committed then criminal charges should be filed right away and let the legal system do it's thing.

You notice that little trollop in Colorado didn't wait years. Now justice can be done, either way, but these women who waited so long to come out when it was politically convenient to do so, and no doubt at the urging of operatives from the parties, they have no credibility - none.

Good work, friend.

Time magazine columnist Joe Klein

Klinton worshiper.
Poor guy lost his mind when he learned his God, who he loved so very, very dearly, was politically dead. The strain was simply too much for him.
He's not alone. There are many who have suffered the same fate.
Every now and then, you'll see a democrat crawling out from uder a rock, or found stuck to the bottom of a garbage can, withering in agony.
This is not so much a sad tale. It's more a tale of pity.
When it comes to the Klintoon/Democrat love fest, the easiest way to understand their plight is to picture in your mind a slug covered in salt.

Hey, South....thanks for the contribution chart. The Buchanan donations doesn't surprise me, those media types are a tight band. Plus, Buchanan takes frequent swipes at GW and the Republican party, so it fits.

"You notice that little trollop in Colorado didn't wait years."

I guess you answered you own question as to why they may have been hesitant.

You notice that little trollop in Colorado didn't wait years.

And she's about to become Exhibit A as to why more women don't come forward.

(not opining as to who's telling the truth, BTW, just noting that "three different men in 3 hours" charge by the defense would be enough to make a lot of women in future situations keep it to themselves. The defense had better have a good reason to make this claim in open court or there should be a team of lawyers disbarred. Absent evidence, the harm they are doing to future rape victims is unconscionable)

They weren't hesitant. They said nothing at all for years and now have no evidence and no credibility. What good are these accusations now except as political hatchet jobs?

"Thou shall not bear false witness". Sound familiar?

If a crime is committed then criminal charges should be filed right away and let the legal system do it's thing.

With Junita, Klinton was state Governor. She ran a nursing home dependant on state government grants.
During the rape, Klinton bit her lip to force her to cooperate. When he was done with her, he told her to put some ice on it.
She then went to friends who were nurses to tend her medically. Her livlyhood was in the rapists hands. She didn't dare say anything. He then started to blackmail her, and reduce the funding to give her a little "hint."
When she did come forward, Klinton never denied raping her. He just bragged how the statute of limitations had run out on a rape charge.

When Paula Jones was brought to Klintons room by the Klinton cronies, Klinon demanded a BJ from her. She did press charges. That is how Klinton ended up in court in the first place. An assult charge.
It was he said/she said, so the defence had to prove a pattern of behavior.
Klinton already admitted an affair with Jennifer Flowers, but the Monica affair was still current. Kathleen Willy came forward to tell her story as well.
When Monica became known, Klinton had her sign a false affidavit saying the affair was not true, but got caught because of the spot on the blue dress.
When before the grand jury, he lied about ever doing it, and he was then charged with purgery.

The obstruction of justice (false affidavit) and Grand Jury perjury led to impeachment.
After all, he's SUPPOSE to be the chief law enforcer in the land.
If the Chief law enforcer in the land breaks two laws in the highest courts in the land, and denies an American citizen her Constitutional right to her day in court, how does he get legally punished for it? Impeachment.

Klinton went on later to have his law licence revoked on ethics charges.

I almost pinged you to this thread.

I'd pay good money to see Peggy Noonan go off on Klein. He's such a hypocrite.

Surprising that Matthews put up at least a bit of a defense of Juanita.

That was quite a panel Chris Matthews had on this morning... Peggy Noonan did a reasonable job of holding down the fort, but the 4-to-1 bias is a bit overwhelming. And Joe Klein's delusions about the Clinton scandals really show what a tough critic he was during those Clinton years and what a cutting satire he penned with his Anonymous book. It's clear he just didn't want to be associated with anything anti-Clinton (or even semi-Anti). Disgusting.
