RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's Christ the Redeemer statue, welcoming visitors to this tropical city for more than 70 years, will soon be seen in a new light.
A French artist has been commissioned to bathe the mountaintop Christ in blue light, for two nights beginning today, to celebrate the statue's 72nd anniversary tomorrow.

Thanks for the pix. I love that statue. I wish I didn't fear flying, since it must be wonderful to fly into Rio and see that magnificent Jesus welcoming you.

Fortunately, they do not have the ACLU in Rio, or the statue would have to go.

My buddy "Junior" had an office for his business "Cobraz Electronics" in Rio in a building that had a beautiful view of Corcovado. You could just sit there and watch Cristo Redentor all day. How I miss Rio and Praia Grande...meu coracão 'ta chorrando...
But I wouldn't trade it for the time I've had with my wife and children. They are the center of my universe now.
Um cantinho e um violão,
Este amor, uma canção,
Pra fazer feliz a quem se ama...
Muita calma pra pensar,
E ter tempo pra sonhar,
Da janela vê-se o Corcovado,
O Redentor que lindo...
Quero a vida sempre assim,
com você perto de mim,
Até o apagar da velha chama...
E eu que era triste,
Descrente deste mundo,
Ao encontrar você eu compreendi...
O que é felicidade,...
O que é felicidade, o que é felicidade...?
Meu amor...
Leny Andrade's version will just tear your heart out.
Pingão, meus amigos...

I visited Rio when I was14 yrs. old.
My mother and I took a cogwheel train up the mountain to the Corcovado.
What a beautiful site.
Rio's harbor was reputed to be able to hold all the ships in the world. And seeing it I believed it.
Flying in to Rio was breathtakiing. You decind through mountains past multiple mountain peaks called 'The Seven Sister'.
The city is gorgeous, every other block is a park, the sidewalks are mosaic ( they are everywhere in Brazil).
Sugarloaf mountain, a football shaped granite rock standing on end, juts out of the bay. We took a cable car to the top. That was frightening even for a wild teenager.
Brings back fond memories.
