A thread for those listening to today's show.
Like I didn't know already that he's human just like the rest of us.
You SHOULD "give a darn" - if YOU were caught with prescription drugs that you bought under-the-counter do you think the cops would just drop you and go after your supplier? Nuh-uh! If your kid was caught with oxycontin he bought from a kid at school who was supplied by someone else wouldn't YOU want the supplier AND the middleman held responsible?
it should not be illegal for someone in his situation to have to get them in the first place.
It IS NOT "illegal for someone in his situation to have to get them in the first place": you go to your physician and SEEK help the RIGHT way, so they can monitor your condition and see when your pill consumption starts getting out of hand. It's a closed-loop system: when your condition doesn't improve then the course of treatment changes to suit. The system WORKS that way. Sitting at home honking-down pills while your physician remains clueless as to your condition is absolutely, positively asinine and irresponsible.
I hope he gets straightened out as much as the next person, BUT I also hope he's treated (judicially) the same as the next person: possession of prescription medicines without a prescription is a crime and, consequently, he must be called to account for it. Him AND his supplier. Personally, I hold the buyer AS responsible as the seller: just because someone's selling it doesn't mean you have to buy it.
With the bazillions of dollars he's said he makes he's gotta go get his pills from his HOUSEKEEPER rather than maintain the doctor/patient relationship he had? After surgery, you just don't walk out the door without the therapy/followup that would have detected his lack of improvement. He's either infinitely cheap OR worried about his personal, private actions becoming public. Either way: the actions of a fool; he should have known better.
Of course, now that he's been found-out and exposed to the public he's got nothing to lose by trying whatever means necessary to 'get clean' and making it the "I'm doing what's right"-thing. More character would have been evidenced had he brought this all to light HIMSELF the FIRST time he went into the tank.
Spontaneous revelation/apology/acceptance/restitution shows a HECK of a lot more character than "oops! you caught me. yeah, I did it. It happened. I'm sorry. I'll 'get help now'. I promise."
Just a minor point but he wasn't "caught" with anything.
Ditto. If you, I or anyone else were in the same situation, this very likely would be a prosecutable offense.
To go one step further, possession of prescription medicines with a prescription is also a crime (at least for the physician and/or pharmacist) if there was a violation of the governing rules/regulations.
If there's gonna be a WOD, it has to evenly applied. This of course begs the question of why there is a WOD ...
No doubt. But I wonder how much of addiction's power comes from "hardwired" biology and how much from psychology.
People can talk themselves into the impossibility of anything - can't find a job, can't get out of the house, can't do the dishes - no end to the can't do's.
Current models of addiction might reinforce addicts in their victim role - the "voodoo effect" I proposed.
Perhaps researchers have factored the voodoo effect into their studies - please cite them.
That I can respect.
No can do. You start going after the Rush Limbaughs of the world with the same fervor as is applied to everyone else, and the Drug War won't be around very long. The Drug Warriors know this, and modify their behavior accordingly.
Thank you, but my stand based on my beliefs has made me a prime target for the "party over principle" group. Whoever doesn't blindly follow the RNC talking points hook, line and sinker, or voices a contrary opinion, is going to get a lot a flack around here these days.

I'm jumping in here, but this statement jumped out at me! That is the very argument used by the Nazis in Nuremberg as a defense. We were following the law, even though it was immoral. If a person knows a law is immoral, it is their duty to disobey (depending on the gravity and other circumstances.) And I am NOT a libertarian, and my views on the WOD are unusual, and they are my own! I take no drugs (unless you count black tea).
There is too much flack here for people who are working toward the same goal.
Sitting at a table talking over sweet tea most of us would agree on most issues and would leave the flames and rhetoric at home..

No, I do not. It is a disgrace that in this country getting pain killers for a real medical condition has been criminalized.
It IS NOT "illegal for someone in his situation to have to get them in the first place"
Yes it is because physicians get harassed if they prescribe too much of certain drugs so they are forced by the government to not give the proper treatment for fear of losing their licenses.
With the bazillions of dollars he's said he makes he's gotta go get his pills from his HOUSEKEEPER rather than maintain the doctor/patient relationship he had?
I am really sick of the licensed hypocrisy in this country. With a license one can do the most abominable things, but without it, doing something absolutely normal and which does no harm to society (and in this case does a great benefit to society - keeping Rush doing what he was born to do) is a criminal act.
If these DEA or whatever they are wanted to get some headlines they could clean out Hollywood. Those folk are all taking illegal drugs and not to be able to do their job but for fun and to tune out from the world. I have said it before and will say it again, this is political persecution and a great example of our having too many laws in this country and too many tyrants enforcing them.
Riiight... not yet, however IF the information the housekeeper turned-over to the authorities proves to be true then he's got a lot of explaning to do: in front of a judge. Also, if everything he had was on the up-and-up then he'd have receipts to show and a physician or pharmacist attesting to the legal prescriptions and sales.
We'll see what the investigators turn up in the coming times.
Again, it depends on HOW you get them. If it IS proven that he didn't have for-real prescriptions for them then he should face prosecution.
Yes it is because physicians < snip > fear of losing their licenses.|
If you as a physician are prescribing a drug to treat a condition that is not improving and you KEEP prescribing it without consultation with others in the field to determine WHY there is no improvement then you should be investigated. There ARE situations where people are in constant pain and they do deserve the medication necessary to maintain their lifestyle. There's a difference between medication as a corrective agent and medication as a palliative agent but, EITHER WAY, its supply and administration should be monitored for the benefit and health of the patient.
I am really sick of < snip > does no harm to society < snip > do) is a criminal act.
Does no harm to society, huh? I've heard it conjectured that his abuse of the drug could have led to his hearing loss. Which he had surgery for. Which, maybe, an insurance company paid for? They paid for a self-imposed condition? If he, say, started chopping his fingers off one at a time and getting insurance to cover the damage/repair each time would THAT be as acceptable as physical damage caused by drug abuse? Go ask the others using the same insurance company how they like their rates going up for compensate for the coverage of the acts of idiots.
If these DEA or whatever < snip > too many tyrants enforcing them.
wow. wild rant. So, then, if hollywood can do it then everyone can do it and prevention/prosecution should be a first-come-first-served -type of thing?
So what? It was his decision, it is his life. It is none of your business to run his life, none at all. You are just a Rush hater who like all others is piling on on him for something which is not his fault. He was addicted by his doctor. He was criminalized by a bunch of bureaucrats looking for fame and to get even at him. That's what's going on here and we all know it.
solitas, you are wrong, vengeful and are going to have your fall someday. I hope that your friends are of better spirit than you.
Rush is my friend, though I have never met him, and you should not feel superior because he has a problem. You have not gone up a notch.
