Dog Gone told me yesterday that they would vote on it today.
Hopefully, a 4th special session won't be necessary to pass this thing !! ...

It should be a pretty open field. The only person to worry about is Peter Waring, a businessman who has tried to buy a GOP seat in the past two elections. He faced off against John Culberson after Bill Archer resigned, and it became the most expensive primary contest for a House seat in US history. Last year, he ran for against John Carter for that new open district, and lost again.

Hopefully, he's lost his appetite for losing and won't try again. He's not very well liked by those who know him, and I'd certainly never vote for him.

Other than that, the only other person I can think of who could be a contender from the Houston area would be Orlando Sanchez who is currently running for Mayor. If he doesn't win, and it will be a very close election, he might file for that congressional seat. He'd clobber you in the Houston region, but I haven't analyzed the population breakdown of the district. Hopefully, he'll win the Mayoral contest next month, and you won't have to worry about it.

You would crush Doggett if you faced him in that district, and you could probably expect substantial financial support from the GOP to ensure it.

"I am considering running in the 10th district"

Well Godspeed to you! We certainly could use a few more FReepers in Congress.

Are any of the GOP incumbents likely to run in the redrawn 10th? The maps changed so much, who knows where they'll run, regardless of where their homes are. Remember, Pete Sessions moved and ran in the 32nd CD instead of his old 5th CD in 2002.

Do you know where one can find the percentage of voters in the new 10th that were in the old 10th, as well as in other districts? Actually, I'm not really worried about Doggett, who will most likely retire or try to run in a Hispanic-majority district, but I'd like to know how many of Edwards' and Stenholm's constituents are in their new districts. If it's below 65%, I don't think they can win.

Yes, Doggett could win in the 25th - he has enough money from his campaign warchest for it. he'll need a name change ...

Here's your opposition:

Despite redistricting, Doggett says he'll run again

Republicans 'did a hatchet job on Travis County,' congressman says

By Chuck Lindell

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Friday, October 10, 2003

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, said today he will run for a sixth term in 2004 regardless of what district he'll be in.

"I've already declared for re-election, and I expect to be seeking re-election to represent as much of my hometown and my home county as I can," Doggett said.

The Republican-drawn congressional map, being debated in the state Legislature, divides Travis County three ways — with one new district extending to the Mexican border, and another reaching almost to Houston. Doggett's home is in the latter district, which was drawn to be solidly Republican.

"They really came in and did a hatchet job on Travis County," Doggett said. "Literally, the street I live on, they circled around our condo and included us in the 10th District. My daughter lives about three blocks away, and she's in another district. My other daughter lives in Hyde Park and is in a third district. I can almost see, from my front porch, all three districts."

Doggett said he is confident a federal court will overrule the new map as violating the Voting Rights Act. The Austin-to-McAllen district seeks to limit minority-voting strength by packing in Hispanics, while the Austin-to-Houston district denies black and Hispanic voters the opportunity to influence elections, he said.

"I think the court will look at this disgraceful process . . . and will reject it," Doggett said.

YEah, but for which district?

Lamar Smith has most of Austin - in 21.

This is funny: "The Austin-to-McAllen district seeks to limit minority-voting strength by packing in Hispanics, while the Austin-to-Houston district denies black and Hispanic voters the opportunity to influence elections, he said."

he's trying to have it both ways! The Austin to Houston doesnt 'deny' hispanic and black voters any opportunity, it has fewer minorities than 15 does. ... and frnakly he could have run in 15.

"YEah, but for which district? " -that was a joke. I'm reading into it he means #10.

And I meant district 25, which goes into Travis county, not district 15, which doesnt.

He could win District 25, but only if it didn't hold a primary. Alternatively, he could legally change his name to Pedro Perro.

It's all in the 48 page report that accompanies the map on the web site. It's toward the end.

Thanks. I got it working. I'm going to be moving to Brownwood in the future. It has changed from 17 to 19. Is this good or bad?

Your new district is 19 ? I don't know if that is good or bad either.

Here is a site that may be helpful to find out ?:

Thanks, Hostile Territory.

For those of you who are interested, the breakdown of each new CD by number of people in each of the old CDs (e.g., how many of the people in Stenholm's old 17th CD are in the new 19th CD---the answer is 30.9%, with 57.5% coming from Neugebauer's old 19th CD, which means that Stenholm is likely toast) are provided in pages 36-39 of the following PDF: http://www.tlc.state.tx.us/research/redist/pdf/report_plan01374c.pdf
