[history]
Here's an odd twist on the Rush Limbaugh football kerfuffle: It turns out that an academic paper published last October lends support to Limbaugh's comment, which critics denounced as racist, that "social concern" led people in the NFL and the media to hope Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb to do well. The study, by Duke University economists Peter Arcidiacono, Jacob Vigdor and Eric Aldrich, is titled "Race, Football and Television: Examining the Black Quarterback Effect."

Black conservative pingIf you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
[As i mentioned, the B/C & JD! lists are going to float into and out of whack over the forseeable future, while I try to cobble a rig back together for myself. My apologies for any incovenience or misunderstandings in this time frame. New signups/removals may be flaky in this time-frame as well; please bear with me, and keep in mind you may have to FReepmail me more than once for me to get it done. Thanks again!]

Why is McNabb considered A-list, while Doug Williams who through more TD's in one quarter of a Super Bowl against Denver than McNabb has thrown in his entire playoff career considered just average?
I think it's because Williams told people he was strictly a QB and it chapped his butt to be called a black QB.

Couple this with
John Lott's article in National Review Online yesterday, and you begin to realize how quickly the media will make this story disappear. We'll soon be beckoned to "move on" any time the issue is raised, lest real data has a chance to penetrate the emotional group-hug the affirmative action crowd gave themselves when facing Limbaugh's comments.

No, I think it's because Williams' Super Bowl heroics were the high point in an otherwise mediocre NFL career. Part of this was due to the fact that he spent several years playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when they were the worst franchise in all of professional sports.

Thanks for that link. That's an interesting little study they did and does lend some credence to Rush's opinion.

I thought the accusation that Rush was a racist didn't wash right. Once again we see the desperation aimed at silencing conservative dissent. What else can we expect from the breed of journalists that proved Whittaker Chambers a liar by saying he had bad teeth?

One should also note that Williams is now the head coach at Grambling and after many mediocre, to put it nicely, Grambling is coming back strong.

I thought Williams "threw" touchdown passes and ran "through" holes in the line.

No argument that Williams was pumped up heavily during that Super Bowl as a great QB, which as a Tampa Bay fan I never believed, but you malign the Bucs to say that during his years with Tampa Bay, the team was lousy. Prior to the last few years, those were the best years the team had, even making it to the NFC Championship game. Frankly, the Bucs went into a tailspin AFTER Doug left, leading lots of us to believe he'd cursed the team somehow.
There have been reports that exorcisms were performed in the Big Sombrero years into the slump. But I think it was the death of Hugh Culverhouse, the slimiest owner in the league, whose place Bill Bidwell is attempting to usurp, that really broke the curse. Thank God for the Glasers!
But I agree Williams was a lousy QB. I can't forget him losing what down it was and trying to hand off on a 4th and 10 situation where we had the ball late in the 4th quarter, and could maybe have kicked a field goal to a win.
And then the ultra-lame Bucs song came on...uck...aaaggh...and Culverhouse was team owner...blecchh...and they wore Zubaz uniforms...in emergency cone orange...AAAAAAAAAAIGGGH!
Curse you for making me remember those days!

You didn't even mention The Swishy Guy Bucs logo. As a Packers fan, I am deeply disappointed that you failed to mention him.

Remember Bill Walton? I always thought he was over-rated. To me, the media was desperate to build him up to be a better player than he actually was. (Just my opinion Mr. Walton)

Well, I can't even remember the last time I saw a picture of Bucko Bruce (shudder at thought). I do have an old Bucs hat with his picture on it, from the last season before the color change.
Thank goodness we're finally out of your conference. I was so tired of listening to y'all gripe about how tough our fans are on you cheesypoof types. Now we only have to listen to the whining occasionally, instead of guaranteeing it every year.
