Schwarzenegger Win Leaves Campus Unsettled

By JANINE PLISKA Contributing Writer Wednesday, October 8, 2003

Disappointment rippled through students and faculty pundits massed at the Institute of Governmental Studies yesterday after results handily gave Arnold Schwarzenegger the governor's seat in California's historic recall election.

About 50 students and faculty members mingled around a single television screen, cycling clips of concession speeches.

Schwarzenegger's overwhelming victory left many viewers without the sparks they had hoped for.

"I don't think it was anger, it was people wanting a show. Davis isn't an exciting person," said Nas Khan, internal vice president for the Cal Berkeley Democrats.

After months of heavy politicking and media coverage, the results drew to a close election circus that Republican UC Berkeley student Antoine Imbert said had stained California's reputation.

"This may not give a good impression of American democracy to the rest of the world," Imbert said.

Most shared a sense of resignation but awaited the final numbers.

Imbert said he was pleased by the shift in leadership, but was reserved about Schwarzenegger's abilities to lead the state.

"I'm glad California will be run by a Republican, but I'm not sure he is the most qualified person. I'm not happy or sad. I'll just wait and see," he said.

Others said they were disgusted by the recall frenzy because it drew entertainers, porn stars and average Californians to put their name on the ballot.

"People are voting for the wrong reason. They came out for no other reason than to vote for Arnold," said William Ma, external affairs president for the Cal Berkeley Democrats. "It was like the American Idol show. Vote for your favorite idol."

Others feared Schwarzenegger's rise to the state's top seat could send a blow to women.

"I think this is the beginning of a downturn for women's issues, gay rights, minority rights and everything I care about," said UC Berkeley student Dorie Perez of the Berkeley NOW Task Force.

But not everyone on campus mourned the results—students danced outside Eshleman Hall after results announced that voters had shot down Proposition 54.

"It's good about 54," Khan said. "At least that's a plus.

Peace, prosperity, economic advancement - "Bah, those things are a mere bag of shells, all we care about is Gay Marriage and feminism because they help us personally," say the idiot zealots.

I dont have one girlfriend who believe that NOW is anything but a bunch of sad, fat cows. And most of my girlfriends consider themselves "liberal" or are totally non-political.

Logical, well thought out answer.

"People are voting for the wrong reason. They came out for no other reason than to vote for Arnold," said William Ma, external affairs president for the Cal Berkeley Democrats. "It was like the American Idol show. Vote for your favorite idol."

Angry, bitter, overly emotional, hate filled.

"I think this is the beginning of a downturn for women's issues, gay rights, minority rights and everything I care about," said UC Berkeley student Dorie Perez of the Berkeley NOW Task Force.

Obvious member of the church of satan.

But not everyone on campus mourned the results—students danced outside Eshleman Hall after results announced that voters had shot down Proposition 54.

Race baiters.

Immagrant Song

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
>from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying:
Valhalla, I am coming!
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
>from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green,
Can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war.
We are your overlords.
On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
So now you’d better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day
Despite of all your losing.

Tradition dictates a riot to ensue from the Berkeley campus. It's expected of them.

People are voting for the wrong reason.

What a goofball. Ho is this person to decide if someone's reasons behind their vote are right or wrong! These people are all for moral relativism until it goes against what they want. With massive voter turn out in the recall, it sounds like people knew exactly what they wanted and were voicing their opinions at the ballot box. You may disagree with what the candidates stand for, but that doesn't mean that your choice is right or wrong. This loser is just ticked because a democrat wasn't elected.

Actually, I'm not too concerned about liberals on college campuses. It's when they get out in the real world and start putting their tired schemes into action that they cause problems. Otherwise Berkely is entertaining. Sort of like the zoo.

The good news is that 50% of the voters in your area voted for Arnold or Tom.

I haven't found our figures yet.
