Thats a good incentive, but they oughtta be toll roads too

Hybrid-non-gas vehicle lanes and a 50cent toll.

The key is to believe, as anti-car scolds do, that solo drivers are selfish clods who deserve to sit in traffic and suck up other people's exhaust.

This is not just a figure of speech. Studies have shown that the overall level of air pollution would be reduced if the HOV lanes were removed and all lanes of traffic were usable by all drivers. Autos would get to their destinations more quickly instead of idling in traffic jams, spewing their exhaust into the air.

But to the professional scolds and nannies in the green movement, and their sock puppets in government bureaucracies, common sense and cleaner air are less important than their own moral preening and bien-pensant posturing. Their world is defined by emotions and motives and the approval of their fellow ideologues, and completely heedless of results and the needs of real working people.

We need to resist the nannyists at every turn. If Nader is for it, I'm against it.

I can't believe the incredible waste of highway funds to produce those stupid behavior modification lanes. They build separate bridges for them and everything.

If they want to ease traffic, then they should require that every goverment worker who can telecommute do so.

Diamond lanes, after all, are bureaucrats' way of making the commute so hellish that desperate commuters will change their behavior

How misguided can the American people be? Government is supposed to stay out of the way so that commerce can happen and build roads so that the acts of commerce can be carried out without impediement. However, there is a breed of politician who loves the idea that Americans must be punished for being productive, working, and paying taxes. Americans must be stopped from freely traveling to work, home and other places, therefore we must make affordable travel by automobile impossible. Why do these power hungry elitists keep getting relected? Sheesh.

Actually, with a Prius one gets better mileage in traffic since the engine can shut off. Its EPA rating is higher on the city cycle than the highway.
I vote for the diamond lanes being open to M5's, 427 Corvettes, and 455 Buicks. ONLY! Oh yeah, Corvair powered dune buggies, too. AND, motorcycles bigger than 1000cc. Of course anything else in my garage.
