New NexGen BIGpoll(TM) Results Show Voters Honing in on Schwarzenegger

COLUMBUS, OH -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 10/06/2003 -- A new poll conducted by BIGresearch for Washington D.C.-based Renaissance Strategies shows a clear majority of California voters remain in favor of removing Gov. Gray Davis from office, with an increasing percentage of respondents saying they'd replace him with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This latest poll, conducted from Friday, Oct. 3 to Sunday, Oct. 5, sampled 1,105 registered voters who participated in the NexGen BIGpoll™ last week via e-mail on how they intended to vote in Tuesday's Recall Election.

The poll posed the question "Do you believe Gray Davis has performed his job well enough to continue serving in office or should he be recalled?" A clear majority -- nearly 63 percent -- said Davis should be recalled with 37 percent saying he should stay in office.

"Davis has failed to convince Californians that he is able to run the state effectively," said Paul Welday, President of Renaissance Strategies. "Based on the candidates' records and careers, California voters seem to be saying they want a leader that is not a career politician."

Davis, during a guest appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live" Sunday, said he believed voters will opt to keep him in office, deciding that a recall is "not in their best interest or in the interest of their children. ... Polls by (other) candidates show this race closing dramatically. It's almost a dead-even race right now."

Not so, according to the data, said Welday.

"That is clearly wishful thinking on the part of Gray Davis' campaign," Welday said. "Voters in California have consistently indicated their distaste for Davis and it appears they'll do something about that tomorrow."

In answer to the question "Which candidate will you be voting for in the replacement portion of the ballot?" 46 percent said Arnold Schwarzenegger -- up from nearly 40 percent a week ago. Cruz Bustamante also saw an increase of just over three percentage points, from nearly 24 percent to 27 percent today.

"Arnold Schwarzenegger will become the next Governor of California," Welday said. "His campaign has touched a chord among voters in key demographic groups and Republicans have rallied to his message."

Of Republicans who responded to the poll, 96 percent said Davis should be recalled with 77 percent saying they'd select Schwarzenegger to replace him.

I'm not sure about the e-mail method of polling. But I have not seen a poll yet that doesn't show Gray Davis being recalled.

THat's the same result I figured on, but by a wider margin. I was thinking 53-47 Dump Gray, 40 Ahnold - 30 Bustamonkey - 20 McClintock - 5 Cornhulio - 5 Ash, Trash and Gary Coleman.

And this poll was of registered voters, not likely voters, taken after the LA Times began its groping articles. Hasta la vista, Davis.

===

Hopefully by tomorrow at least another 10-15% of Republicans will decide to help Arnold win with a landslide to send the Dems a message and to forestall any court challanges by the Dems.

It's time to support the Republican party and Schwarzenegger.

Looks as though the backlash to the Thymes smear is setting in. We may be seeing Wellstone Effect #2.

Push poll. Even many of the people that will vote no will admit that Davis is a lousy governor and wish someone else were governor. An honest poll would simply ask the question that is posed on the ballot "Shall Gray Davis be recalled (removed) from the office of Governor?"

I note in this poll, Tom McClintock has surged from 12.65% in their late September poll to 12.73% in the most recent poll.

Just two more hurdles before the fat lady sings: 1) voter fraud and 2) court and recount challenges.

I've already predicted (last week) that Tom will get 8% of the vote.

I think you may be right, that most voters, when faced with the actual ballot, will not go for Tom. However, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get between 10-13%.
