After thorough and painstaking research of several hours at a home theatre and a couple of minutes at the library, the LAff Times has determined a couple of minutes before the California recall election that Arnold was most likely a Nazi death camp guard....

The woman in red

Sacramento Bee ^ | 10/04/2003 | Daniel Weintraub
Posted on 10/04/2003 6:21 PM PDT by amordei

I have just witnessed one of the strangest events I have ever seen on the political campaign trail.

It began shortly after the conclusion of Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign rally in downtown Modesto. As the press was filing out, several reporters suddenly surrounded a woman standing in the pedestrian mall near the rally site. Only a few reporters could hear what she was saying. Soon the word spread: "She's looking for Arnold," one reporter told another, who told another. More reporters gathered around. Cameras and tape recorders were thrust toward her face.

The woman, with long brown hair, wore a bright red top, black Capri pants, and sandals, and she carried a canvas bag over her shoulder and a manila file in her hand. Schwarzenegger spokesman Rob Stutzman approached her and they began talking. Reporters crowded around closer to try to listen. The woman and Stutzman walked away, onto K Street, which had been shut to traffic for the rally. Reporters followed. Stutzman somehow broke free from the pack and guided the woman to a grassy area off the sidewalk. The pack of reporters held off at a respectful distance. It appeared as if the woman was showing Stutzman photos of a child from her manila file, perhaps some paperwork. Before long, bystanders were shouting that the woman was the mother of a Schwarzenegger "love child." ....

This story is amazing spin. The headline says that NBC poll shows support for recall softening and then goes on to report almost the same numbers that were being reported in three polls BEFORE the LA Times late hit on Thursday. Almost no change!

Support for recall softening
By Daniel Borenstein
CONTRA COSTA TIMES POLITICAL EDITOR

Support for the recall is softening in the wake of reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger groped women and his subsequent apology for having "behaved badly sometimes," according to a new statewide survey.

The Knight Ridder/NBC Poll finds that likely voters are leaning toward booting Gov. Gray Davis from office and replacing him with the Republican actor. But backing for the recall weakened during the four days of polling, Wednesday through Saturday.

"There is a significant number of people who are having second thoughts, taking another look," said pollster Stuart Elway. Nevertheless, he said, Davis has a lot of ground to make up in the final two days of the campaign if he wants to keep his job.

The reports about Schwarzenegger's behavior surfaced Thursday morning, after the first night of the survey. The poll found a momentary surge in opposition to the recall on Friday. But results from Saturday showed the numbers returning to the level found in the first two days.

However, by week's end, voters were less firmly rooted in their choices, with more recall backers moving from definite support to probable, and a growing number of undecided. Similarly, opposition to the recall also slipped.

The survey examined both recall questions voters will confront on Election Day: Whether to remove Davis from office and who should replace him if he is unseated. On the first question, 54 percent of likely voters said they would definitely or probably vote to support the recall, while 41 percent would definitely or probably oppose it.

On the second question, Schwarzenegger leads with 37 percent, followed by Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, 29 percent; Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock, 15 percent; and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo, 3 percent.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters was conducted Wednesday through Saturday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.

Romney cancels trip to California to stump for Republican actor

Associated Press ^ | 10-04-03

JENNIFER PETER, Associated Press Writer Saturday, October 4, 2003
(10-04) 16:45 PDT BOSTON (AP) --

Republican Gov. Mitt Romney cancelled his plans to campaign for Arnold Schwarzenegger Saturday after days of negative publicity about the Republican actor's treatment of women and past comments that appeared to praise Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Romney didn't withdraw his support from Schwarzenegger, but said he had decided to stay home because of the "sideshow politics" surrounding Tuesday's gubernatorial recall election.

"I still endorse my friend Arnold. He's the best choice to be governor of California," Romney said in a statement. "It's unfortunate the events of the last few days make it hard to focus on the issues that really matter, like jobs, the economy and reform." ....

Schwarzenegger Releases Data on Hitler Comments

NY Slimes ^ | Oct 4, 2003 | DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Posted on 10/04/2003 5:41 PM PDT by Kay Soze

Campaign aides to Arnold Schwarzenegger distributed an excerpt of a 25-year-old interview in which he speaks admiringly of Hitler, providing some additional context to comments that were in a book proposal written by the producer of Mr. Schwarzenegger's first film, "Pumping Iron."

Mr. Schwarzenegger's admiring comments about Hitler appeared in a 1997 book proposal prepared by George Butler, a documentary filmmaker who produced "Pumping Iron" in the mid-70's, introducing the public to Mr. Schwarzenegger and to the body-building craze he helped popularize. The book proposal was obtained this week by The New York Times and ABC News.

Sean Walsh, a spokesman for Mr. Schwarzenegger, confirmed that Mr. Schwarzenegger's staff was in possession of the 100 hours of footage unused in the film. Mr. Schwarzenegger acquired all the unused footage along with the rights to the film in 1991....

Mark Steyn: US Sans California? That’s Acceptable

My friend Tom says most of America’s problems would be solved if we could just get California to secede.

I know what he means — and not just because, without the huge head start they get from California’s electoral strength, Democrats would be unlikely to re-take Congress or the presidency in my lifetime. You can make an economic case for dumping California. You can also make an international relations argument. Without California, most of the global resentment at American cultural imperialism would be transformed into resentment at Californian cultural imperialism — the movies, TV shows and pop music produced by Hollywood....

Undaunted by the womanising claims, The Running Man's convoy rolls on

Telegraph UK ^ | October 5, 2003 | Julian Coman
Posted on 10/04/2003 6:59 PM PDT by lainie

-- In extraordinary scenes repeated across California, Arnold Schwarzenegger's road tour has proved a huge hit with the voters. Julian Coman joins him on the battle bus --

On the "Running Man" bus, the mobile headquarters of the most extraordinary political campaign in Californian history, a key strategic decision has been taken. The woman in charge of make-up is hurriedly called to the back. Arnold Schwarzenegger is making an unscheduled stop.

Aides huddle on the L-shaped leather couch in the backseat office. Next to it is a bed. Arnold never uses it. "I'm on my exercise cycle every morning at 5:30am," he explains. "By the time I get on the bus, I'm up and running.

A political message for the imminent excursion is hammered out. If anyone asks about the recent womanising allegations, Arnold is to question why so many appear to have been saved up for the last week of the campaign. "Isn't that suspicious?" he is to ask....

Postal Driver Dies With Load of Absentee Ballots
By Steve Hymon, Times Staff Writer

A truck carrying mail for the U.S. Postal Service, including more than 300 absentee ballots for next week's recall election, overturned early Thursday in the Mojave Desert when the driver suffered a fatal heart attack, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver was Garald Smith, 57, of Mojave, said CHP Officer Steve Hunsaker. Smith worked for Tony Smith Trucking, a firm that contracted with the postal service. The crash occurred at 5 a.m. near Pearsonville on U.S. 395 when Smith, driving north, suffered a heart attack and then crossed all lanes of traffic before crashing through a fence....

With Schwarzenegger, a Circus of a Campaign Rouses Voters

New York Times ^ | October 5, 2003 | Dean E. Murphy
Posted on 10/04/2003 7:27 PM PDT by John Jorsett

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 4 — Arnold Schwarzenegger was in town this week to raise money for his campaign to replace Gov. Gray Davis in Tuesday's recall election. Despite repeated suggestions that Mr. Schwarzenegger would pay his own way to Sacramento, the fund-raiser at the Fairmont Hotel was one of many he has held across the state.

An accompanying news conference was more of a rarity. And the way it unfolded speaks a lot about why Mr. Schwarzenegger is considered the odds-on favorite to become California's next governor, even as he is hounded by accusations of sexual misconduct and reports that he once spoke admiringly of Hitler.

After taking questions from reporters, Mr. Schwarzenegger introduced his friend, the comedian Dana Carvey, who launched into an impression from a "Saturday Night Live" routine. Speaking in a mock Austrian accent, Mr. Carvey declared, "He's 10 percent body fat, but 40 percent in the polls." He then went on to make a joke about Mr. Davis.

End of news conference, with the news media leaving with some questions addressed and the entertainment media with lively videotape of a Hollywood big shot performing at the Arnold show. Mr. Schwarzenegger and his aides were all smiles, despite the shouts of one British reporter, "Is this a campaign or a circus?" The honest answer would have been a simple "Yes." ....

Arnold Goes on the Offensive

Fox News ^ | October 4, 2003
Posted on 10/04/2003 7:32 PM PDT by John Jorsett

MERCED, Calif. — Arnold Schwarzenegger (search) went on the attack Saturday, denouncing the latest sexual harassment allegations made against him as untrue and charging that all of the 11th-hour accusations were intended to wreck his campaign for governor

The Austrian-born candidate, also accused of expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler nearly 30 years ago, received support from a leader of a Jewish human rights organization and the man who trained the teenage Schwarzenegger as a bodybuilder, both of whom said the actor has championed tolerance.

The Democratic National Committee (search) issued a resolution Saturday calling on Schwarzenegger to apologize for the alleged Hitler remarks. The Republican gubernatorial front-runner dismissed the move as "sleaze politics" and said for the third consecutive day that he despises Hitler.

During a stop near Clovis on Day 3 of his bus trip across the state, Schwarzenegger denied the harassment allegations.

"The last accusations that I read today are absolutely untrue. They're trying to torpedo my campaign. They're trying to make me look bad out there so that people vote no," Schwarzenegger said.

"Why has this not come out before?" he said of allegations by 11 women that he groped or sexually harassed them....

California: From Pitchforks to Proposition 13

New York Times ^ | October 5, 2003 | Davd M. Kennedy
Posted on 10/04/2003 7:38 PM PDT by John Jorsett

STANFORD, Calif.

On Jan. 25, 1787, 1,200 desperate farmers brandishing barrel staves and pitchforks attacked the federal arsenal in Springfield, Mass. They called themselves the Regulators. Led by a debt-plagued veteran of Bunker Hill and Saratoga named Daniel Shays, they sought firearms with which to enforce their threats to close the courts in western Massachusetts and compel the legislature to enact debt-relief measures, including an inflationary paper currency and an end to mortgage foreclosures.

A single cannon volley killed four of the embattled farmers. Then a Revolutionary War hero, Gen. Benjamin Lincoln, arrived with a militia that scattered the remaining rebels and relentlessly hunted them down through the heavy snow. Yet the Regulators' failed outburst had consequences that have shaped the character of American politics for more than two centuries, up to the current recall election in California....

Church and state: How much do voters care about the religious beliefs of candidates?

Bill Simon, speaking at a press conference last week, mentioned that he, Richard Riordan and Arnold Schwarzenegger all belong to the same church. "It must be in the holy water," Simon joked.

They all attend St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica. (It's not just a Republican church -- actor Martin Sheen is also a member.) Simon, who is active in the church, says Schwarzenegger regularly attends Mass with his family.

"I always see them there at the 9:30 a.m. children's Mass," said Simon in a phone interview later. (Simon has endorsed Schwarzenegger's candidacy.) ....

I half-heard someone on MSNBC’s “Abrams Report” last night saying that there are 6 million reasons to vote against Arnold, those 6 million reasons, of course, being the victims of the Holocaust. This has to rank as one of the stupidest and most unfair comments of the recall. Here is a New York Times report today, giving fuller context to Arnold’s comment.

As far as I can tell, Arnold’s view is a very crude version of that of John Luckas in The Hitler of History.

In any case, he’s not a Nazi....

Calif. May Reset Political Compass

Washington Post ^ | Octrober 5, 2003 | Dan Balz
Posted on 10/04/2003 7:53 PM PDT by John Jorsett

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5 -- California long has been on the cutting edge of America's politics, and Tuesday's historic gubernatorial recall election is no exception. Once again, the nation's most populous state is helping to define the politics of discontent.

In the final hours of an extraordinary campaign, the spotlight is on two men: Gov. Gray Davis (D), the career politician who is in grave danger of losing his job just 11 months after winning reelection; and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican film star who was pulling away from his rivals just before being hit by charges of sexual misconduct and of once having praised Adolf Hitler.

But the recall represents more than a battle between these two men and over which party controls the governor's office for the next three years. At stake is the future direction of politics here and perhaps nationally. Will Tuesday's election lead to a change in the political climate here, one that helps break the partisan standoff that has frustrated efforts to resolve the state's fiscal crisis, or will it lead to more partisan warfare, gridlock and political retribution -- and more voter disaffection? ....

Three candidates make political grist out of Schwarzenegger allegations

San Jose Mercury News ^ | October 4, 2003 | Seth Hettena
Posted on 10/04/2003 8:26 PM PDT by John Jorsett

SAN DIEGO - Arnold Schwarzenegger sat out the final debate in California's recall election but the three other major candidates who appeared Saturday made political grist out of the controversy swirling around the Hollywood superstar.

Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante said if one of his three daughters had experienced the groping, sexual harassment or inappropriate conduct that Schwarzenegger is alleged to have committed, "It wouldn't have taken a campaign to resolve it."

"If he were a black man, he'd be in jail. If he was brown, he'd be in jail. If he were a poor white he'd be in jail," said Green Party candidate Peter Camejo in the most spirited exchange of the 90-minute debate. "What does it tell us about our society that a rich white person can do the type of things that he's alleged to have done? ... Just because he's wealthy and powerful he's above the law. No, this issue needs to be looked into."

State Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Northridge, agreed that the accusations were serious and called for investigation. But he added that extra degree of caution was required because the allegations were surfacing so close to Tuesday's election....

New Voters Are Calif. Recall's Great Unknown

Washington Post ^ | October 5, 2003 | Edward Walsh
Posted on 10/04/2003 8:29 PM PDT by John Jorsett

LOS ANGELES -- Only 948 new voters registered in California's San Bernardino County in June, which was not surprising because this was not supposed to be a major election year in the state. But the next month, when California's historic gubernatorial recall election had become a political reality, the number of new voters swelled by 12,323.

In August, in Santa Clara County, 6,487 more people registered to vote than had registered in August 2002, shortly before the November election in which Gov. Gray Davis (D) was reelected to a second term.

Who are these people?

They could be Democrats angry at the Republican-inspired drive to recall Davis from office. They could be conservative Republicans who want to boost the candidacy of conservative GOP state Sen. Tom McClintock to be the successor of Davis if he is ousted....
